  • The jar video never traumatized me. Disgusted me, sure. Never traumatized me.

But death of a favored character in a fantasy novel? Never recovered. I still occasionally have moments where I feel like crying over the death of a particular character.

  • One of my favorite things in life is using Latin or Greek plurals on words that it makes absolutely no sense to use them on, and do not follow the rules of any language naturally involved.

I had steak and potati for dinner last night. Just one steak, though, I cannot eat multiple steakices

  • My mom had us eat by making food an exciting event. We often had new foods, got to try new things, and overall made it very game like. "Tonight we're going to try Swiss chard! I'm so excited! I wonder if it will be good or yucky?"

And then also told us that taste buds change all the time, and that by 7 years every taste bud has changed out. So two things that taught us: you will like different things as you age, sometimes disliking things you used to enjoy, sometimes loving things you used to hate. And that you never know when that individual taste bud will change that makes you suddenly like a new thing. So try stuff often and you'll end up enjoying new things.

As a result, we were the only 5 year olds in our neighborhood that fucking loved liver and onions

  • She was dressed as Janeway, and made a reference to there being coffee in that nebula, but refer to a a refill shipment. And upon googling it to make sure I had it right, it was actually in 2015 that that happened and I just heard about it and assumed it was current. Samantha Cristoforetti was who said it

  • My favorite is the Janeway reference

  • Thank you so much! I was just trying to tell a friend about one of my favorite webcomics from years ago, but it's been so long that I had completely forgotten the name, and could only describe it as "basically it's like if the flag balls were people, and it's set in Europe, but I can't remember where"

  • I personally don't use twitter, and for what it's worth, I also don't really consider it a meme. I just meant that the twitter screenshots have been used as memes and in meme communities since around that time, per my own experiences

  • Fun fact! Hermit crabs have a better housing economy than we do! When a crab that needs a new shell stumbles upon one that is too large for itself, it will wait around for another crab of the appropriate size to take it, and then take the smaller shell it discards. They will often do this with a line of several crabs, effectively creating a socialist housing system in which each crab gets the correct sized home for itself.

  • Honestly, that episode where she's possessed by the pah wraith is the least cold and awful we ever see her...

  • That's what I like about it, too :)

  • My preferred version of the "nature of the Scorpion" tale is a little different. It doesn't really fit here, but I like to post it whenever this story comes up, because I'm autistic, and it brings me joy to share the story.

One day, a Monk was walking alongside a stream when he saw a Scorpion struggling in the water. Knowing that scorpions cannot swim, he knelt down to scoop it out of the water.

Just before setting it down, the Scorpion turned and stung his hand. The Monk withdrew his hand in pain and the Scorpion fell back into the stream.

When the Monk realized this, he scooped his hands down again to save the Scorpion. And just as before, the Scorpion stung his hand and fell back into the stream. This scene repeated itself several times.

A little boy who was playing near the stream asked the Monk, “Excuse me. Why do you keep trying to save the Scorpion — Don’t you know it will just sting you every time you try to rescue it?”

The Monk, picking up a leaf and rescuing the scorpion successfully this time, replied, “Dear boy, just as it is a Scorpion’s nature to sting, and Water’s nature to make things wet, so it is my nature — a Monk’s nature — to save.”

That's not the exact version I was told originally, but close enough.

  • I'm fairly certain the panels on the bottom are read right to left, like a manga. Top panel, white lady "oh induction is so nice!"

Bottom right, Chinese lady casually lighting her cigarette off a column of flame

Bottom left panel, smoking said cigarette

  • I have, in fact, been told I am a man of very little substance.

  • A friend and I were on a phone call and discovered the meaning to life. Absolute, certain, irrefutable meaning of life. There was no questioning it, no misunderstanding it.

It is gone. Neither of us can remember it. All we can remember is that the conversation started by me describing the "cloacal kiss," the mating method of chickens.

Neither of us were high or drunk or (above normal) sleep deprived.

  • Good to know my phoboas are rooted in ancient fears
