  • I used to wonder the same about the cameras built into cars.

A lady blew a stop sign and almost ran into me today, with kids in the back who weren’t secured. Imagine if the camera on my car recorded that and uploaded it to the local law enforcement. Wouldn’t be me doing it. I hit my brakes and tooted my horn. No harm no foul. But imagine if social services took her kids because she didn’t buckle them in and was playing chicken with other cars.

People really need to tighten up with all these cameras about. It’s surprising they’re only just now being weaponised against the public.

  • Animal Crossing. All I have to do is go to bed by 1800 (2000?) and I avoid ever seeing the knee high tarantulas.

  • Same reason you (and/or others) ostensibly preach the same/similar noble causes online, but you don't refuse a paycheck either: you have bills to pay. So do they.

  • Yes. Your data can be intercepted in some cases. Proton VPN is free, so it’s not like you have to pay for one.

  • I never dug too deeply into that one, but from what I've heard, I want it to be true.

Yoda showed us that we didn't hate characters who spoke grammatically differently from the rest. Yoda was never annoying, though. Personally I just felt like Jar Jar was rather pointless.

  • What I don't get is, how did Dobby get so much love in the Harry Potter fandom while Jar-Jar Binks in Star Wars got so much hate? They were both insufferably annoying characters.

I get that Dobby has fans; what I don't get is why the same wasn't extended to Jar-Jar.

Jar-Jar didn't die, I guess, but I feel like even if he did, fans would glaze him over decades later. They'd say "good riddance" and that would be that.

  • The original is more subtle: "I hope your day is as pleasant as you are," since it subtly implies the negative without outright stating it.

To go even more subtle, you can simply say "I hope you have the day you deserve." The brilliance of this one is, no one thinks they're the villain, so the person will think you're wishing them a good day. It depends on what they think of you (or what they think of what you think of them). If you're generally a well-natured sort who sees the good in people, they will probably take it as a compliment. But if you're more of a realist and you tend to treat people as they deserve, they might be second-guessing it.

  • Counterpoint: I've heard Whataburger is worth the money. It's also a Texas-based business, I believe. Never tried it, myself. Not sure if I would or not.

  • I'm not surprised given Texas's reputation. Big hats, big trucks, "don't mess with Texas"... yeah how about I just skip Texas entirely next time I visit the States. I hear some parts of it are nice, though, but hot isn't my thing.

Carrying a sword openly sounds awesome in theory but terrible in practice.

  • I've used ChatGPT to make a couple funny images. Since you can only generate one every couple days, even if it gets something wrong and you want to make a revision, "sorry I can't do that until your timer resets," it's just not really worth it to try, unless you pay I guess, but I don't want to pay for it. I've had it answer a couple questions that stumped Google, and it got them right, just a matter of, "we're hanging out and we have a debate that Google/IMDb can't easily solve" so we ask the chat bot, it gives the answer, we all agree it's good enough, then we move on.

If all the AI chat bots went away tomorrow, I wouldn't miss them. I use Apple tech and we have the worst AI platform. I'm in the iOS/macOS 27 beta with the "New" Siri, and it's not very good at all. I guess it's better than the old one? Still nothing to make OpenAI (ChatGPT) worry. Never used Grok or Meta AI, and I think I tried Gemini once? Never used Claude. Asked Copilot things at work. Not work related, even though we have "Enterprise data protection" turned on, which means it won't send your queries to the cloud or learn from you. I still don't trust it. Definitely don't like it. But it's an amusing tool sometimes. If it fucked off tomorrow, it wouldn't be soon enough, and nothing of value would be lost.

  • To those who didn't read TFA: he wasn't talking about anime like Boku no Hero Academia or Dragon Ball Z. He was talking about hentai.

The article confirms that Crunchyroll and a couple other anime streamers are available in Texas.

The guy was trying to access PornHub (or a site like it) to watch hentai, and that site simply blocks all Texans (and people from other countries and US states that have similar laws).

As for those asking if it's illegal: the US constitution does enshrine the freedom of speech, or rather, your government's inability to pass laws restricting said freedom. However, there are still exceptions. You still can't make threats to officials, or other things that can harm others.

  • Personally — my definition is any time you post something that isn't constructive to the topic (or the comm) with the intention of distracting others from constructive discussion (typically, by getting them to engage with you instead).

I think there's an art to it, and some trolling can be fun, as long as everybody's having fun. Personally, I'm not very good at it. I say what I mean and mean what I say. But I don't mind as long as it's fun.

  • It was just an easy system to attack, and difficult to justify. I thought it sounded good.

  • Nope, silence only helps the oppressor

  • Past $800, you’re not getting a better processor. The base iPhone and Galaxy offer the same chip as the Pro Max and Ultra, respectively, in most generations.

You’re only getting more cameras or screen. The $2000 ones fold.

  • No. The only innovations these days are AI. If you don’t care about that, you’ll be fine with whatever.

My iPhone is pretty current from 2024, but my Android phone from 2019 isn’t much slower or less capable. It has less storage, but it has a memory card slot. There isn’t much it can’t do that the newer iPhone can, except for generate AI slop on device.

If you need AI, they’re gonna make you pay to play. If you don’t… just chill.

  • There’s a trucking company called Swift that gets a lot of flak for hiring inexperienced drivers. One of the nicer ones is So What I Failed Training. The rudest one I’ve heard ends with Toddlers, you can probably work out the rest, but you probably shouldn’t.

  • Pizza Slut for Pizza Hut

  • Sega started that. “Sega does what Nintendon’t.” Going back to the 80s. Maybe 90s.
