  • Keep on keepin' on, I suppose. There's a concept known as Last Thursdayism that this is similar to. It says that everything since last Thursday (an arbitrary day of the week, possibly referring to the book The Man Who Was Thursday more than Thor, the namesake of the day) is real, and everything before that is implanted memory. The movie Dark City explores this concept.

    Wikipedia used to have a whole article on it, but they've since taken it down and integrated it with something else and added some bizarre claims to it. It's now part of an article on rejecting the concept of the Earth being billions of years old. I'm not even mad, it wasn't a real school of thought to start with, but they're trying to make it sound even more crazy now (they added that "left-handedness is a sin" as if that has anything to do with any of this). So, not gonna link it. They used to go into some detail about how people have justified it. I suppose due to the rise in flat earther theory, they don't want to lend any credence to any batshit insane theories, even though most of us were just pointing them out for funsies.

    So, being that Dark City is one of my favourite movies and I've considered that, which is very similar... I feel like there isn't much you can do. Worse, anything you do outside the norm would be recorded as some kind of success by the people running the experiment.

    I'll be the first to agree that Jadzia was more beautiful, but a woman is more than just her looks, and Ezri is more than just a pretty face (and she is absolutely beautiful in her own right). I just wish we got more than one season of her. Jadzia didn't really have six seasons of content, but also, Worf was not present for the first two, and I think they were married in season 5? Going from memory here. So they couldn't really cut her arc short. And, she only left the show because the actress wanted more money, or something — so she had to be replaced. (Not taking sides there, just saying what I remember from back then.) Anyway, Ezri absolutely deserved more time to grow.

  • I agree the bottom surgery should be an option, but not every trans person wants bottom surgery.

    And what do you mean by "you give"? Should the taxpayers pay for it? I do not think bottom surgery is cheap.

    Some people turn to crime to get three hots and a cot. It's offensive to say, but people have done it. Jail/prison sucks, but homelessness sucks worse and some people have made that choice. If jail/prison is also a way to get free (taxpayer funded) bottom surgery, I can see people going that route.

    Of course, if you want to make an argument for socialised medicine, I will agree, so we can skip that whole runaround. The general problem with socialised medicine is higher taxes, and I think you get longer wait times since more people are going in for care, but ultimately I believe it makes a people more healthy.

  • Okay, a lot of people feel that way. So, how many convicted murderers are you willing to take in? What about people who have assaulted children? Are you willing to trust them around your children because you feel society has failed them?

    A lot of people want all the inmates let out, but not in their backyard. They typically want them released in the backyards of people they don't like. In other words, they want to weaponise them.

    So then you have the issue of "what do we do with people we deem a threat to society"?

    Most girls will hit you if you call them a cow. Hiromu Arakawa has it right in her family name, but she owned it, drawing sketches of cows in the margin of her manga. You might have heard of it. Fullmetal Alchemist. I know in India, they think of cows as sacred. It's not an insult there. Not sure how that works in Japan, though. They do tend to think differently over there.

  • I'm all for trans rights, but I'm not sure what people want prisons to actually do here.

    So the issue is, trans women want to be housed in women's facilities. But the state says they are biologically male, so they are housed in men's facilities. Trans advocates are saying they are subject to sexual assault in men's prisons more so than male inmates because they present as female.

    The problem with citing the Eighth Amendment (freedom from cruel and unusual punishment) is that it does not exclusively apply to transgender inmates — and I don't think anyone is suggesting it does. The issue is the women in women's prisons, if you introduce a person who is (in the eyes of the law) biologically male, you're violating the Eighth Amendment of the women at the women's prison. At that point, if a person can just choose which prison they go to, why not just integrate them? This would cost more and have higher taxes, and nobody wants to pay that.

    I did a bit of Googling, and I'm no expert, but it seems like some states will house a trans woman in a women's prison if she's had bottom surgery (that is, she has a vagina), and in some cases, has changed her official identification (which requires the bottom surgery). The issue here is, not every trans person wants bottom surgery. There are plenty of trans women who have penises, and they want to be housed at a women's prison — honestly, not unlike cis male inmates at a male facility, they would love to be the only penis-having inmate at the women's prison.

    And therein lies the problem. It seems like the states are saying "you have a penis, you go to a men's prison, you have a vagina, you go to the women's prison." It's not about trans people because (at least in some cases) it isn't affecting trans people who have completed bottom surgery.

    I don't know what we can or should do about it. I do know the US has taken steps to prevent prison rape. If a person assigned male at birth is taking steps to present as female, but has not (or does not want to) completed bottom surgery, it seems like prison is not a good place for them.

    So maybe we should stop saying "be gay, do crime". Because that sounds like the worst thing a gay (or any LGBTQ+ person) could do.

    Final thought: not everyone with a penis will rape someone with a vagina and/or presenting as a female given the opportunity. If that were the case, you wouldn't be able to have daughters if you have sons and vice-versa. Some states do require separate bedrooms/changing areas past a certain age, but requiring them to be housed separately would not work in our society. Growing up Gen X, I personally did not have sisters, but I knew guys who did, and they would be alone with their sisters (sometimes also with 1-3 brothers as well, with the girl the only girl there) and I never heard about any sexual assaulting. Granted those are siblings, but still. Most people don't want to rape anybody, even if they have the means and opportunity.

  • All the time. I'm an Apple guy, but I also have an Android phone. It's a Galaxy S10 and despite being 7 years old, I still like it. I kinda want to replace it (the Fairphone 6+ is freakin' awesome in green!) but it still gets the job done. I do miss my old Galaxy S3 sometimes, the custom firmware I ran on it. My favourite was called LiquidSmooth and it was based on Android 2.1 or 2.2 (Jellybean). It was a different world back then. I never woulda considered an iPhone back then. Now all phones are kinda samey. I use an iPhone because it's boring (it's consistent). I miss when being an Android user meant you were on an adventure. Now they're just iPhones with spyware. (They were before too, but you could do more about it. And yes, I know GrapheneOS exists and so does LineageOS — I remember when LineageOS was called CyanogenMod.)

    Unfortunately I think the glazing is led by influencers who aren’t affected by the price increases. And they figure — likely, correctly — that if they don’t give the company good coverage, they’ll be scooped, and forgotten. But, that’s where you start. With the fanboys. The loudest supporters.

    The alternative is, these things just keep going up until the line is drawn and enough people hold it. And sure, it’s fine if you bought at the lower price… until you need a new one.

    If you’re getting a deal, it’s fine? People pay iPhone prices for Google Pixel phones and don’t care that Google makes like $1700 a year off their data, and they defend this.

    If you’re not getting a deal, don’t use the app. If you used it before but you don’t use it now, that data isn’t still helping them. It’s stale. Like a lot of their food. And that Pixel phone.

  • When did I say FLAC isn't lossless? I said I know how to make the second best thing after lossless. Lossless is WAV, FLAC, ALAC, it really doesn't matter which one it is. I'm actually encoding to low-complexity m4a (aac) at the highest bitrate. To my boomer (Gen X actually but they always forget us and I'm closer to boomer than Millennial) ears, my m4a files sound pretty close to lossless at about a third the size. It's my sweet spot of quality to file size.

  • I used to have Spotify Premium, on the family plan. My wife almost never used it, but she had it. I put it on her phone, made her an account, added her to the family plan. So she had access. She just didn't use it.

    I left because, at the time, Spotify was not engaging with the Japanese market. About 10-15 years ago, the big western record labels in the US, UK, et al stopped signing new rock bands, stopped promoting rock music, and rock radio was quickly dying. Meanwhile, Japan was taking rock music and running with it, and a lot of the popular acts were singing in English, or mixed Japanese and English. And Spotify was not biting. You could get a couple Japanese bands on Spotify, if they were huge, but most of them? Not up there. I wanted rock music. Culturally, rock music moved east, and Spotify mostly refused to follow.

    Apple Music had a six month free trial (this was... 2018?) and we dropped Spotify to Free and went with that. Worst case scenario, I figured, I'd just get six months of free music and go back. Now for background, I'm an iPhone guy, my wife uses Android. Even with an iPhone, I was using Spotify, because, at the time, it was just what you did. No one cared about Apple Music, it was a cash grab, it wasn't taken seriously. But I checked it out, I imported all my playlists, it had everything I wanted... and it had all the Japanese stuff I was looking for. We never paid for Spotify again.

    Best of all, my wife actually uses Apple Music. Apple Music is fine on an Android phone. She got a new Android phone at one point and was told her old one wasn't worth anything. I took it, wiped it, and put a few apps on it. Of course I have Apple Music on it. Even on a 2019 Galaxy S10, it still runs. I've also got a 256GB SD card in it with a backup of all my music, so it has the streaming, and it has offline playback (via an app called Poweramp, but any offline music player would work).

    I wouldn't mess with Amazon or YouTube for music streaming. If I had to choose an alternative to Apple Music, I'd only consider one where their primary business was music, like Qobuz is a new one that looks promising, or maybe Tidal. Ironically, last I heard, Napster pays artists the most per stream, but it's not the filesharing Napster. That app died almost 20 years ago. A streaming service (Rhapsody, I believe) just bought the name and logo.

    I'm one of those guys who doesn't need to pay for music streaming. I have a massive collection and I have room to expand it. I know how to take a CD and get the second best digital copy (the best being lossless) from it. My computers don't have optical drives, but I have a USB-powered one that, with an adapter (USB A to USB C) works just fine on my laptop. Haven't plugged it into the desktop yet. Ports are all in the back, it's a pain in the knob, I'll just use it on the laptop. I pay for music because I love music. More than movies, more than TV shows, more than books, and more than video games. I don't see paying for streaming as a bad thing. Pay for what you love, if you can. A lot of people pay for services they don't use. My wife insists on paying for Netflix. I never use Netflix. I think she uses it sometimes. I think it's a waste of money. She doesn't. So she pays for it. I pay for Crunchyroll because we both love anime, and I do it through Apple TV so everyone on our family plan can access it. I would not pay for streaming of dumbed down TV shows, but that's just me. I pay for what I love.
