  • Why are the IDEs of becoming worse and worse and worse? Right now I have a window which I cannot close because no menu visible. Cursor is always hidden, have to use the mouse. It is so

  • I'm using Rustrover for a year now on KDE and I can't observe the performance decrease or the AI craze reported here. Neither have I witnessed any impactful bugs like OP describes. In fact I'd say I haven't seen much bugs at all.

    I'm not using the AI/LLM features at all and I can't remember if I disabled them or if that's even possible but when I read here that JetBrains is overly focussed on AI, I'd say that you shouldn't dare to leave your carefully crafted nvim environment and take a peek at what's happening over in the vs-code world as their LLM commitment on a whole 'nother level.

    Don't want to diminish what others here experience with their IDEs. Maybe I'm just having the "It works on my machine" syndrome but I would be interested about what OS and specific IDE OP ist using.

    Not allowing the second profile to run in the background is a big win for battery life.

    Wait what? I assumed it wouldn't run by default. I just checked and you're correct. There's a switch for that. Battery drain is ok but not as good as other more bloated Androids I owned. I know Pixels are not the best in that regard but I hope this will give it a good boost. Thanks for the heads up.

  • Yeah not eating enough protein does that. Try TVP. It's an extremely versatile (Chilli, Lasagne, meatloaf, meat balls, bolognese, Asian fried noodles etc.) and cheap (for now) replacement for ground beef. It seems to have a better amino acid profile than chicken:

    It blows chicken out of the water regarding minerals like iron, magnesium or calcium. Compare the TVP-spec-sheet with this. Tofu (if made with gypsum as a coagulant) is even more packed with calcium, where 100g can already mean more than 1/2 of your daily needs.

    Chicken comes with more vitamins (but also antibiotically resistant bacteria, chloride, growth hormones and animal suffering), while TVP brings anti-oxidants in the form of isoflavinoids.

    Yeah it's based on soybeans but you can see tons of manly man vegan body builders eating that stuff on a daily basis. They got big breasts but those are not from phythoestrogens.

    Regarding your Burger addiction. TVP is the perfect remedy.

    A quadrillion of websites exist for fire vegan recipes (which take care of the vitamins missing with TVP) with one of the most prolific one being https://www.noracooks.com/.

  • It provides screenshots, categories and icons for Flatpak packages. AFAIK those aren't provided by AUR or the official Arch repositories. Icons seem to be integrated for some official packages at least.

    A Shelly in-built way for user contributed additional data for Arch packages could be a way to tackle this. But that needs additional infrastructure, developers and volunteers who curate the contributions.

    Shelly is a nice frontend. Octopi is too, to quickly check PKGBUILDs, show contained files or open the respective AUR page.

  • "Die Anstalt" is goated, yes. On the more lighter side I like Pastewka, Sketch History (basically Germany's Monty Python), Die Familie Heinz Becker, Mitternachtsspitzen, Kalkofes Mattscheibe and Loriots as well as Gerhard Polts movies and series (very dated though sometimes timeless).

  • Don't know about Apple. My impression is that they take privacy pretty serious. Android though has since a few version ago a green dot in the notification area that indicates when the microphone is active. Also you can set the apps to always ask the user if they want grant the permission for microphone recording. There are also buttons to deactivate the microphone and camera completely.

    So yeah it's easier then ever with current Android versions to not be spied on if the user invests 5 mins to set the microphone and camera permissions of all apps to always ask when used. Like you said other spying IOT devices and data retention (at least for traffic data) at the provider level pose a much greater risk for surveillance.

  • Just watched the first video. It's 6 years old but the evidence presented seemed undoubtedly like Instagram and FB were listening to conversations and aggregating the info together with geolocation and surfing behaviour. The insta CEO tried to deflect it with insinuating that the user must have searched for specific keywords previously but the journalists specifically tested it with words in conversations they never exposed their phones to before. 20 mins later they got AD's on insta.

  • Thanks. Seems you're correct and Sunshine profits from CUDA when using this NVFBC but it doesn't seem to explicitly depend on it to run. I tried it pretty soon after installing EOS and can't imagine having installed CUDA so early. Last time I explicitly did it was for Ollama.

    I just looked on that EOS machine on which Sunshine worked right from the start and no CUDA package is installed but nevertheless nvidia-smi shows CUDA Version 13. This seems to be because the nvidia driver brings the CUDA runtime with it which differs from the big CUDA toolkit. I'll try CachyOS again when I eventually buy an AMD GPU.

    I think you meant Cachy when you pointed out Limine is an option while doing automatic partitioning. And yes this worked very good. I meant that Endeavour doesn't offer it at that point in install.

  • Yes AFAIK it is in the extra repo, which I'd always prefer to the AUR. Thing is, I tried Apollo beforehand, as I wanted clipboard support, which was probably only available in the AUR. Maybe that borked something with the install. I could install Sunshine though but Moonlight from my main Endeavor install couldn't make any connection even with opening all the wanted ports in the firewall.

  • Recently tried CachyOS on my HTPC. Couldn't get Sunshine to run. It looked beautiful though and the docs seemed really in-depth. Endeavour (thanks to Arch, I know) is just so stable and fast. Just the right amount of pre-installed stuff like reflector, yay, the firewall-config app for firewalld with sane defaults, nice BTRFS subvolume layout, correct NVidia drivers. Would be nice to have Limine (for BTRFS snapshots) as an option besides SystemD boot and Grub in Calamares but I installed it in addition to SystemD boot. Gaming works tremendously good. Everything else too.

    I really can't recall the last time an update went wrong. On both of my machines (one Intel, one AMD, both NVidia).
