The question is mine or yours?

The High Corvid of Progressivity

Chance favors the prepared mind.

~ Louis Pasteur

  • Claimed they had every intention. That intention is never followed through, even after they gain the capacity to create holo-emitters. Overall, it's kind of a horrifying fate, because canonically, without another resolution, eventually they reach the limits of the fake universe, and discover they've been imprisoned the entire time.

  • So is TNG's entire plotline with Moriarty. One could argue that the Federation knew about the sentience of holograms long before the Voyager era, and actively encouraged their slavery despite their clear sentience.

So, summary is that Moriarty is holding the Enterprise hostage (he's gained the command codes) in exchange for his freedom from the holodeck. Picard trades it for control of the Enterprise, and Moriarty and his love, the Countess, depart the Enterprise on a shuttle.

Unknown to Moriarty, Data and Picard had created a program within the program, allowing Moriarty to believe he had departed the holodeck despite actually remaining within it. Picard and Data then ended the program the moment the command lockouts were removed, and left the holodeck a few minutes later. Moriarty and the Countess Regina Barthalomew would spend the rest of their lives inside a memory module, unaware of their situation, for as far as they were concerned they had left the Enterprise to live their lives in the real world.

  • Excellent article, especially the detail to which it goes into how TRON handles files. This is pretty cool:

BTRON's core idea was that the user-visible primitive on a desktop computer shouldn't be a file or the application, but the typed document part. In other words, a block of content with a stable identity and a declared type. Parts can contain other parts, and the same mechanisms that embed a figure in a report can also embed a report in a workspace, meaning that there was no special case for a top-level file.

This model could be found across the interface as well, and you can browse a container in 1B/V3 and see each entry carries its type in parentheses after the name. For example, a document called 中国・韓国料理ガイド(図形), meaning "Chinese and Korean Cuisine Guide (Graphics)", describes this file as an image. In comparison, DOS would have given you an extension.

...but I'm curious as to how BTRON handled multiple file versions (backups, revisions, etc) if there's not a top-level file.

  • What happened to "Blue no matter who?"

Seems like that particular messaging got real quiet once the DSA started winning.

  • If you can get them, the Clover Valley ones ($1.85 @ Dollar General) are pretty good, although the fig filling is golden rather than brown.

  • Winco ones are the bomb. Love employee owned stores - overall quality there is top-notch.

  • I think we're beginning to see that pedophilia isn't just an aberration of a few bad apples in the GOP, rather it's a per-requisite for gaining power in the party. It provides their handlers the compromat needed to enforce compliance with the Project 2025 agenda.

  • The core of your question is really "Why do people suggest therapy when I want to talk about my negative emotions?"

Because working through a damaged psyche isn't something your friends and family are qualified to do, and they're likely going to make it worse or damage their relationship with you if they try.

But I get why you're asking - you reach out during a dark time looking for support and community amongst those you know, and they use "you should talk to a therapist" to dismiss the conversation, which really doesn't solve anything and ends up making you feel worse by suggesting that only a professional you pay would want to listen to you.

  • You can't reform rot.

  • Not that you (or anyone reading this) should start up again, but if you roll your own the price goes down dramatically.

I'm in the US, where a pack of my brand (American Spirits) was $15/pack. At a pack a day that came out to $450/mo. Pack of Drum rolling tobacco is $10 for 1.5 ounces, which will last about two weeks, so $20/month or a cost decrease of 96%.

If you're near a Native American reservation, you can get 6 ounce bag of Signal or Farmers Gold pipe tobacco for $15 - which will last about two months at the same rate of smoking.

In general, the taste and quality of rolled tobacco is better than what you get in cigarettes. Just get some papers ($3) and a zig-zag cigarette roller ($3) and you're good to go. You also end up smoking less on average (I'm down from a pack a day to about 8 right now), although it will be unfiltered, so I'm not sure how that balances out from a health perspective.
