  • "this is our top priority"

"so what exactly are you going to do about it?"

    "we don't know"

  • the other reply didn't exist yet when I started writing mine. sorry that I took longer because I tried to provide more detail about the thing you seemed interested in

  • there's actually new research saying prototaxites may not have been fungi, but belonged to an entirely separate kingdom that's now extinct. one of the defining characteristics of fungi are that their cell walls contain chitin, the same stuff that makes arthropod shells. prototaxites was found not to contain any chitin, while other ancient fungi of the same age as prototaxites already did, so it's not a feature of fungi that was adapted later. prototaxites was also found to contain microscopic structures that don't exist in any known fungus species

edit: damn, someone beat me to it while I was trying to find the details

  • don't forget cocaine and cannabinoids

  • he'd call that buying him breakfast

  • technically yes, the issue is eventually you run out of atmosphere to push off of to maintain that speed, and if you don't have enough momentum at that point to take you the rest of the way, then you'll fall back down. but I suppose if we're already assuming that they can fly without atmosphere, then that doesn't matter

  • I'll be the other guy: even if they could fly, the escape velocity of the moon is still 2380m/s, more than 25× faster than the fastest bird flight

  • that "movement" has been mainstream for the entire 400-year history of the country and its predecessors. hell, the guy who wrote "all men are created equal" participated in it

  • is this funny if you know who John Barrymore is?

  • You owe them two weeks (notice) and that is all.

incorrect, you don't owe them shit. if you would like to use them for references, it is a good idea to give two weeks' notice, otherwise you can just leave any company property behind (laptop, keycard, etc.) and walk out the door and never talk to anyone there again

  • I know this is a joke question, but there is an answer, and it's Eärendil the Mariner

  • and in the same vein there's the premise that all these works are just translations of manuscripts he found as part of his work as a linguist. so in canon everything we know comes from a translation of a copy of a single source with limited information

  • the Tolkien legendarium is a lot more loose than most people think. it's got a reputation for a high degree of specificity and detail, but that's more true for some things than others, and sometimes those details are contradictory between different versions of the same story throughout the editing process, with no clear indication of which one should be considered canonical

  • what does that even mean? the whole point of the tech industry is for tech-literate people to work to provide products and services to the broadly tech-illiterate public. the goal of a tech product is to be used with as little tech-literacy as possible. why would you assume that someone is highly tech-literate just because they use the product of a tech company?

  • feels like a "bad 2-sentence horror story" post

  • oh, yeah I didn't get that at all. good premise though, sounds like it woulda been funny
