  • I do not know how China works internally, but sounds difficult to be at home at times with your family

  • On Lemmy there has been a lot of reaction against anything llms, no matter positive or negative for the technology. Granted, llms made everything worse, and the leaders of it won't stop doom trolling. Which makes a lot of people averse to anything relates to llms, and worse, relate to ai = llms, which could not be further from the truth. Let's see with time how it evolves, but right now is the direction taken is neither good or functional

  • These chatbots leverage a lot of emotions by having way too human interactions with people. In a sense, they are personified, which lead to vulnerable emotional people to have this sort of dependency and a massive fallout when it is unplugged or not accessible. Also, is no one going to point out an 8 year old saying she has a "boyfriend" and she has a dependency on ai?? Where dafuq are the parents?

  • I have heard quite recently from a podcast called "weird little guys" about the theory of the "outsider". For political reasons, it is easy to frame a problem has being an "outsider" force doing said bad behaviour, since it is easy to blame solely on "outsiders" instead of addressing the problem. Since there are people that are still quite tribalistic on the way of thinking, this works for them. Since anything different = bad. And on this spectrum you find from racism to xenophobism (and no, don't correct me to xenophobia, people are not afraid of outsiders, they hate them. Big difference)

  • Your point is true until you find a lot of music that is mostly accessible via CD only. I'm with you, getting stuff at bandcamp is great. But I have so much music that does not exist any other way that I got a CD player for the PC to rip the cds and find CDs at second hand market (and also, the CDs are so bloody cheap for a lot of good old music)

  • Do not forget the VPN was rebadged from mullvad (I think) so it was not even their own stuff

  • This is actually an interesting answer. I am in the process of reading the main book as of now and I can already feel it won't be enough. I did find out recently about rustlings and that is actually quite nice to have a feel on the language. I do think however more is needed, and as you mentioned, doing small programs should help. Problem is: where to even start? I find incredibly hard to have ideas on things to do on the smaller scale that are good for learning opportunities. Also another thing I am equating to do is to actually just read existing working code of some Foss project. I still didn't find one that is good to already see patterns and other nuances, but if someone knows that would be very helpful.

  • And that is also true, however, as a CEO you are paid for mostly 3 things:

    • company steering
    • company vision
    • accountability

If a CEO fails the accountability part.... Why is he even being paid? I had a discussion over the years about managers that don't take responsibility if someone on their team messed up and throw under the bus whoever did the thing wrong. If I was in a position of power, I am sure I would fire the manager on the spot. It is literally part of your function to take responsibility in a collective level

  • You are not wrong, but if you read between the lines it says the message exactly as I mentioned, claiming "they did it", like the CEO has nothing to do with it

  • This story reminds me of something else I have been pointing out for a very long time. It is not so uncommon to see layoffs after McKinsey drops by the building for a while (could also be bein or other consultancies in the same field), and more often than not, ceos like to say " they made me do it!!". So.... To be clear, you do not have agency and you are not control whatsoever about these layoffs? Really? Sounds difficult to believe.

  • What we are seeing right now is a massive backlash on how llms got advertised and subsequent effects (I mean, did you see the price of ram lately?). The thing is, if this got advertised and grew in a responsible manner, all of this would not exist. We would have most people evaluating llms as tools instead of being the anti Christ. It is a shame, but it is what we have. Also, I do think llms will be better in the future, but much smaller than what we have now (and more local as well).

  • I have an excellent filter, not talking to people. Works every time.

  • The problem is a bit more nuanced unfortunately. There has been open source projects that decided to close bug reports because there is just so many of them, and, a good portion of them are either duplicated or straight up not relevant (meaning, in a vacuum you could say there is a bug on place x, but looking at the code more broadly it doesn't really apply). If the bug reports that came out were mostly good quality and relevant I would for sure be more positive of this.

  • Not me. For the longest time finding a decent station in my area was inexistent. The first moment FM transmitter in the cars became a thing, I went all in to my stash and play what I have there

  • Misheards lyrics have to come from somewhere, right?
