  • Well, yes, I personally have never seen a male giraffe mate with another male giraffe. I've never seen a male and a female giraffe mate, either. In fact I've never seen a giraffe in the wild at all.

    So I'm gonna take this one step further and say giraffes don't exist in the wild. Every giraffe that exists lives in zoos because that's the only place I, personally, have ever seen them. Any evidence to the contrary is fake news.

  • Modern life, with modern politics, has been scary enough that I struggle to imagine what could scare me anymore. I've been homeless three times, I've had friends die young, I've come to a point of acceptance and I'm not sure if it's healthy or a sign of being beaten down so much that acceptance is my cope.

  • Oooh, thank you! I love adding resources like this to tabs on my work computer. The nature of my job means I'm sometimes with kids with vastly different interests, so the more resources, the better.

    Off-topic, but if anyone has/works with a kid who loves dinosaurs and prefers visual information, I also have a neat dinosaur size comparison page bookmarked.

    If I were a student in that state, I'd make it crystal clear why I'm transferring out by referencing this bullshit. Loudly. To everyone - my classmates, those in charge of the college, the legislators behind it all, and any social media I had access to.

  • A kid I worked with loved airplanes. When he played, it became a running joke that there would randomly be "turbulence!" and he'd wiggle around.

    One day, he was playing with another kid, but he was a rocket ship this time. The other kid, knowing his joke, decided to playfully bump into him and say, "turbulence!"

    This little five year old, with his toddler-esque voice, often asks big questions that can be hard to answer. After this, he asked me, "Is there turbulence in space?"

    I mean, yes and no? I explained that it's not turbulence like an airplane experiences, since there's not enough air in space to do that, but there are other forces that can act on a rocket that can change how it moves.

    Thankfully, he didn't pry any further, because that's the extent of the knowledge I can ELI5 on that topic. 😅

  • I know this is the cats community, but my old dog was similar. Sometimes I'd be looking for something on the ground, like a four-leaf clover or something I dropped. She didn't know what I was looking for, but she'd come by with intense interest in whatever I was sifting through. If I were to start digging, she would have started digging, too.

    It was funny when it snowed and I'd get the snow shovel. She'd follow me and start digging at piles of snow without any clear direction or goal.

  • My parents wouldn't have gone there, but my little brother and I would've explored the shit out of places like this. Seeing someplace so empty would've triggered our imaginations, we'd probably end up pretending the room is actually full of stuff but it's all invisible or something.

  • I feel this as a Millennial. Being able to adapt to change is at the core of our existence. Since pigeons live in cities where they take whatever opportunities arise, I'm not terribly surprised they are willing to try new things and see what happens. Similarly, I feel like if I didn't get used to chaotic change, modern life would be impossible to navigate.

    It's funny, though, that pigeons refuse to be "pigeonholed" into one way of doing things.

  • I always liked the community events Reddit did. I wish we could do something like /r/place. I guess the next best (low-tech) thing is starting with a blank image file, adding a line, and uploading it for the next person to add a line, so on and so forth. Make some kind of collaborative artwork where everyone contributes a bit. Whether it becomes a graffiti wall, a collection of memes, or nothing but multi-colored dicks, I know I'd have fun.

  • Depression is like the underlying current of my life. Anti-depressants go a big way to help me stay afloat in it.

    Otherwise, I try to focus on the day-to-day. I have a job where I teach children, and even the kids I don't directly work with see me as a role model. As such, I do my best to impart pro-social behaviors and lead with understanding and kindness. I want them to have the tools they need to overcome a world that wants to turn them bitter and lonely.

    It's not a big thing, but I know change starts small. If I can help these kids become decent adults, I know I'm accomplishing something to improve the world.
