  • Humans can drive with just vision.

    Tesla is doing it the hard way. Their model involves cars just having vision and driving the same as humans do. Humans can do it, why can't computers? Seeing as they have more cameras than 2. In theory they should be better than human drivers. Once it is solved they could instantly drive anywhere humans can.

    Waymo has taken an easier route and they have used a lot of detailed mapping with also an assortment of additional sensors. Waymo doing it the easy way has only recently achieved this. Turns out it's really hard. Harder than everyone including the experts expected probably.

    But with advances in computing and things like LLM's Tesla is catching up. Who knows how long that will take though? I always thought waymo was doing the right thing so I'm biased.

  • I hate cars as much as the next rational man. But I'm ironically really into the self driving car hype.

    I think of transport like a pyramid.

    Walking is at the top followed by micro mobility and cycling. Then at the bottom is trains, with metros/ trams above and buses above that.

    The issue comes from two things. The last mile problem. You need to get to the railway station and sometimes it's too far for a walk or a bike, or you need a bike at both ends. The "obvious" solution to that is to drive to the station. But then it just becomes easier to drive the whole way (especially if you need transport at the next station).

    So people start driving and then there is less demand for public transport and more cars mean less people want to cycle.

    I think self driving cars will be game changing. They solve the last mile problem which means metro and railway usage could very easily increase. Much, much higher usage of ride hailing means more people in each vehicles (might even replace buses with mini buses), those vehicles don't need to park in say a cycle lane or even downtown. This frees up land and opportunity for more walking and cycling. Also people will be more comfortable cycling closer to a self driving car.

    I really hope this causes a cultural shift and that shift is well utilised. But it could do absolutely nothing if those car brains foam at the mouth and complain about a new cycle path and bike storage no matter the positives.

    I wasn't thinking the second but that would be an example. I would say conversations with men over this topic is a lot easier than you would expect. There is support there. Bringing up with women who want a men to not cry or be sensitive can be difficult.

  • The highest frequency I see of it is when issues are discarded when it is an issue with men. Be it homelessness, suicide, job inequality, domestic violence or any other issue. But not for women. It seems men are worthless in a lot of people's eyes because they aren't women.

    Or equally men are responsible for all the bad things in the world because simply they are men and men are responsible. For example a common issue is when men say they open up to a woman and that women used that to attack them. Then someone might say this is the patriarchy and toxic masculinity in action and men need to sort it out. Even though the man has done absolutely nothing wrong only the woman. Deflecting any responsibly from women doing something they shouldn't have.

    The inequality of responses from those being harmed, or undervalued and those responsible for the negativity seems at times strongly dependant on if it is a man or a women.

    At least that is what I have seen mostly. But I'm more curious about others.

  • Not exactly what you want but I heard about people in the military practising things and they learn. "Slow is smooth, and smooth is fast."

    By doing that it makes you quicker. Sometimes when I'm late and start rushing I end up forgetting things or knocking things over or dropping. So I take a breath and say slow is fast. Also my career history is big on "right first time" doing something twice is a huge waste.

    Also I remember Adam Savage said he got close to death (or was getting close to being rescued from death) then he told himself "Calm people live. Tense people die." and he managed to free himself.

    Taking a moment might not just save you time or money it might save your life.

  • You guys are really bad at understanding basic economy theory.

    It works on supply and demand and assumes that everyone works rationally and with full knowledge.

    The invisible hand of the market finding the optimal solution is basically the 0th law of capitalism.

    Now economic policy, you'll be amazed to understand is about fixing inefficiencies that do not allow for optimal conditions. Tonnes of people go learn about what are the issues with capitalism and how to make it better, that's what economic testing is about. That's why it's better than socialism because it's competitive and strives for change.

    If people are forced to work for poverty wages then they are losing their true value and capitalism would be about trying to fix that value. If everyone had UBI that would equate the negotiating position of workers and they wouldn't have to take poverty wages. That's why UBI is the capitalist solution to that problem in capitalism. It allows to market to work the way economists want it to work.

    People don't use words as absolutes. America is largely referred to as a capitalist country. My saying that isn't incorrect. But you can argue technicalities of words all you want, communism sucks or (mixed economies heavily leaning to communism sucks).

    UBI is also a great idea within socialist economies, where there would be no force against it.

    Maybe. But socialism is a stupid inefficient system, so it's a non starter.

    UBI works very well with the market based capitalist system. That's where I think it will shine.

  • UBI is the perfect capitalist solution to the majority of problems. It should allow for less market distortion and could have some really interesting outcomes.

    I'm very excited to see a first world country use UBI.
