  • The worst person you know just made a great point

  • I don’t know if your changed your view on the issue after getting more context on carrotcypher’s histoy on Reddit but I’d like to share some of my quick thoughts

    1. I don’t think it’s probably fair to characterize him as a nazi but I do think it’s fair to find some of his views objectionable
    2. He let his personal politics influence his moderation decisions outside of posted community rules. It’s bad moderation when Lemmy.ml doesn’t it and it’s bad when he does it,
    3. Removing him as moderator is appropriate based on number 2 moreso than number 1
    4. Defederation from FOSStodon is a nuclear reaction that I don’t personally agree with but it’s a freedom that the fediverse is built on. Zealously demanding all (non-malicious) instances remain federated is a bad thing as much as zealously defederating from instances that don’t have the right politics.

I often find myself outside the “acceptable viewpoints” on the fediverse and it hasn’t really affected me other than getting a few downvotes once in a while. The fediverse isn’t actually as ideologically pure as we think it is, I think the constant tankie/liberal drama is proof of that.

  • Some people are willing to go against their own personal wants and desires if the majority of the community agrees. They may do it because they believe in democratic principles and whatever it is may be not what they want but doesn’t cross the their “line-in-the-sand” of what they are willing to do in service of their community.

And when it does finally cross that line, people will step down like Kevin has done. I may not agree with the democratically elected government of America right now but I am still an American. You don’t have to agree 100% with the community to still be a member

  • Some people volunteer and contribute out of their own good will for the betterment of society. Especially people who believe in FOSS which is a reasonable expectation out of someone who admins FOSStodon

  • Pirates breathe air, therefore oxygen is enabling copyright infringement

  • Well adamtots is his instagram handle

  • Not to counter your anecdote with my own. But I have been getting a lot of email spam pushing books and workshops dealing with narcissistic or toxic employees and I don’t even manage anyone so it may just be that firing toxic people is hot right now as far as workplace issues and any trend has people trying to make a buck off it

  • This is a much better looking style than Adam Ellis’s old buzzfeed art style but I don’t know if the joke lands any better.

  • ActivityPub literally uses inbox and outboxes just like email. Email is also widely adopted and understood. It’s the best analogy we have currently

  • Unless you are aware of further developments than I am, Alphonso required permissions and provided a consent dialog so it could not be considered spying or eavesdropping.

  • Valve is a private company owned by someone who is passionate about games and so unlike other companies with investors, they leave short term money on the table to make the best product for gamers. If its ownership model ever changes it will speedrun enshittification for the same reason other storefronts suck

  • What exactly is the value that steam provides with its 30% cut that Apple doesn’t provide? Not defending Apple by the way.

Openness of the hardware is a valid point but that isn’t exactly a feature of steam (nor a distinction between the other platforms in OPs comment)

  • I get why people like steam. But as a steam hater, if GabeN ever dies and the kids or whoever is heirs are decide to sell to VCs or private equity. That 30% will be just as oppressive as anyone else’s.

  • US Mobile is the best deal I’ve been able to find with their yearly unlimited plans. I pay once around Black Friday for what I paid for 2 months of service on Verizon

  • Millennials are the largest generation in the workforce, they were born to the boomers the largest previous generation before everything went to piss and birth rates dropped. Millennials are the next boomers, they won’t be culturally irrelevant for a long time. Sad too, as popular culture has basically broken down to just remakes and reboots of properties from our childhood

  • Hey now, we also have programming and meta-fediverse discussions as well /s

  • It’s still worth it to red-pill people of the harms these algorithms cause and accept smaller network sizes that exclude people who refuse to “quit smoking” so to speak.

  • Anyone can defederate from .ml but they have a lot of users being the dev run site, so many don’t. Or at least that’s the reason lemmy.world has given in the past about why they have don’t federate with hexbear and lemmygrad but still do with ml

  • Lemmy.ml Lemmygrad Hexbear

Basically the 3 far left instances that will enforce the discourse to be Marxist and anti-west.

Most instances are defederated from the latter two but not the first because that instance is run by the main Lemmy devs (who are communists)
