  • Whenever my grandmother talks about United Parcel Service, she always says "ups", one syllable, instead of U-P-S like most people do.

    Lately though, whenever she gets a package that arrives damaged, she calls them "Oops".

    Whenever I'd encounter 18-wheelers out on the road, everyone has the usual jokes about Swift. Sure Wish I'd Finished Training, Stevie Wonder's Institute For Trucking, etc. but there's jokes for every large trucking company.

  • In your opinion is reading War and Peace the same accomplishment as listening to the audiobook? Why or why not?

  • Humans were telling stories to each other orally, way before they'd ever started writing those stories down. If you ask me, audiobooks are just an extension of that history. That doesn't mean I think audiobooks are a superior format for reading, but it's not an inferior one either.

    As far as audiobooks go, this isn't really much of a thing anymore, but the only important caveat I'd make is abridged books versus the whole thing. If you want to read a story, read the whole damn story. But that's just equivalent to skimming through or looking up cliff notes for a hard copy.

  • Sim racing.

    I'm a major gearhead, I've always loved cars, driving, in pretty much any form it comes in. Especially racing. I follow, or I've at least watched/heard of basically every form of motorsport on the planet. Getting to do it in real life has been a dream of mine, but that requires a lot of time and money I simply don't have.

    For the cost of a beat-up Miata and a set of summer tires, my sim rig PC lets me (virtually) drive any car, on any track, at any time. And not just cars; trucks, planes, pretty much anything. There's also the added benefits of not having to pay for car repairs or hospital bills whenever I virtually crash.

    Sure, it's still not the same as the real thing, but with all the hardware and peripherals at my disposal, I can get pretty damn close.

    Cringy as it is to think about now, I was swept up in all the DogeCar hype back in 2014. Made sure to pre-order a die cast as soon as I could, and the driver signed it for me later, at an unrelated race.

    Also, Skweezy Jibbs. He signed my brother's pants at a movie theater a few weeks ago, and then my brother gifted me the pants.

  • What's your go to when you want someone to be impressed by or at least thoroughly enjoy your food?

  • Cacio e pere - just cheese and pears, with pasta.

    Boil your choice of pasta. I usually prefer penne for this. While that's happening, dice a pear or two, pan fry them in olive oil. Take some of the pasta water, mix it into some pecorino romano cheese to make a paste. Add pepper. Drain noodles, add them to pan, along with cheese paste. Mix it all together. Done.

  • Man, I was hoping this book series would get a mention here. Blocking out the sun as a means of transmitting a message is something that happens in the series. Or, it's talked about, at least. It's been a while since I've read it.

  • What was the absolute worst bootleg DVD menu you encountered during the physical media era?

  • I was on a charter bus once as a kid, for a school trip, and the driver had a pirated copy of Shrek 3 in the bus's DVD player. I only remember this because the bus broke down along the way, right after the DVD player was turned on, but before anyone could actually start the movie.

    So, we sat on the side of the road, while the DVD's "menu" ran on a loop. Nearly two hours of Shrek yelling "get your royal highness to Far Far Away Land before I kick it there. Now, which way am I kicking?"

  • If a "live" consciousness transfer isn't possible, I'd only go for it if I was told I'd fall asleep and wake up in a new body. I wouldn't want to know if this was how it actually worked.

  • I've got Windows 10 on a few machines at home, strictly out of inertia. LTSC packages too, so no plans to change over yet.

    Everything I've acquired since then gets some flavor of Linux, though.

  • People without college degree, what do you do?

  • I drive an 18-wheeler for work. The industry's been pretty good to me, although it's taken me several years and plenty of companies for me to find a place where I comfortably fit.

    There's money to be made here, though, especially if you're willing to specialize. By which I mean, pull a more complicated trailer than a standard "dry van". Flatbeds, tankers, stepdecks, automotive haulers. Removable goosenecks for oversize freight. The list goes on.

    If you want to also go home every night, there's foodservice, beer/soda distributors, or less-than-truckload companies like ABF or Old Dominion. Some of these companies are even unionized.

    Should you decide to go this route, don't get your CDL through a trucking company, and dear fucking god, don't lease a truck through them either. Go to a standalone school. Companies will try to recruit you there before you even come close to graduating.

  • What is your guilty goto food that you just can't stop?

  • Pilot/Flying J truck stops have this thing called the "Big Dog", a sausage roll that's over a foot long. Garlic butter on the crust of the roll. It's delicious. I end up buying one every time I go inside... and since I drive a truck for work, that's a near-daily occurence.

  • Did you work as a teenager, if so what was your job?

  • Well, it wasn't quite legal since I was paid in cash under the table, but my first job was washing dishes at a restaurant when I was 16. First job I actually paid taxes for, didn't get one of those until I was 20.
