There will be times when the struggle seems impossible. Alone, unsure, dwarfed by the scale of the enemy. Freedom is a pure idea. It occurs spontaneously and without instruction. Random acts of insurrection are occurring constantly. There are whole armies, battalions that have no idea that they've already enlisted in the cause. And even the smallest act of insurrection pushes our lines forward. Tyranny requires constant effort. It breaks, it leaks. Authority is brittle. Oppression is the mask of fear.

    But I get it, morality and ethics are very broad and gray, and people differ in what they think is okay. Some people would feel uncomfortable and do what they can to avoid it, while others think, eh, no harm, no foul, I'm just looking, right?

    I do have to wonder what feelings if any the latter get if they get caught doing it. Again, probably a mix.

  • I get the point being made, and it makes sense, however the ending begins to sound a lot like the "640k is enough" (that wasn't actually said) but was used by a lot of people for their incredulity of how much more progress could there be, or be necessary. It also reminds me of an old Popular Science article of the 50s that tried to imagine how life would be in 2000. They got a lot of the technical things close, which is sort of what this post is trying to suggest, that we can imagine what's technically possible for science. But they got a lot of the social aspects of how things could be used wrong or totally didn't see it, as the necessity of use changes.

    If they're just keeping the suggestion of categories of software very broad, then I suppose new needs could be pushed under existing headings, but I think they're reaching to say more that everything we might need in the future already has a category with something there, and anything else isn't a need.

  • Senate seat or Speaker of the House, let her gain more power in Congress and help to transform the other seats there to progressives a state and district at a time. Also keeps her potentially in control longer than even an eight term Presidential position. Granted, it is possible to drop back down to Congress after President, but I don't think it's been done much or at all, and certainly not in today's world where the security would be a big deal. Her momentum and baggage, even if it was a good Presidency, will impede her work, and again that's eight years lost in changing the larger picture of the government. The long term goals are I think far more important here than the next four or eight years.

  • Unfortunately because of how federation works you don't get a single All page that has everything already decided for you or linked to all that is out there. It sucks that it does require a bit of knowledge and effort before you start seeing things come in, and maybe one day there will be better newbie paths. It's better than it was early on where it was total confusion on how to pick an instance or how anything even works.

    What's funny is that the best part of Reddit was always the small niche subreddits.

  • See a vet, get their opinion. However, I will say we had a cat who developed some hair loss in a few places here and there. One of the vets insisted it was probably fleas, recommended treatment and all that. We knew we didn't have a flea problem. The hair eventually came back. We're pretty sure some dynamics in the house going on were causing them to be nervous and either scratch (hives?) or just lose hair as a reaction. And that kind of thing is hard to diagnose from just a single vet visit.

    But see a vet, maybe it's some skin condition or something else they can see the cause of. Perhaps diet change? Allergy to something new, or got into something? Lots of causes.

  • You could make the same case for a browser, an email client, a graphics or video editor, etc. The UI is an interface to basic core processes that are usually the same that all have, with some extras on the top for uniqueness and features that might be more appealing than other UIs.

  • Honestly, it could be because of the age of the hardware I'm working with. Just haven't bothered pursuing why it occurs since I have a workaround. The surprising thing to me is how simple the install was for both Linux versions. I did not expect it to boot the first time with no issues at all to troubleshoot to get things to work.

  • My first question was going to be specs, but that's new enough that there's plenty of flavors that should work fine. I have a 2009 MacBook that I was able to up memory to 8GB, and that opened up being able to put Linux Mint vs. the Kubuntu it was running but struggling with (mainly due to Firefox needing 1GB sometimes which would kill its 2GB RAM).

    Only real issue is every great once in a while Cinnamon acts flaky (garbage characters) but I put a shortcut to restart it that seems to fix it without messing anything up. Being a secondary computer for me, that's good enough.

  • Once we get rid of that pesky AMOC, it should cool back down quickly. Or at least make things different.

    A habit of mine, to type something into search suggestions that my brain thinks might not be right. First thing that comes up with "amoc" is "amoc collapse news". Whee.

  • The code being run by any instance could be changed? Just don't use the same passwords anywhere else or share personal information and it doesn't matter outside of that instance's security.

  • Yes, and the ones where they had to make adjustments to what was given made it seem even more realistic. Take the example with Riker. It probably used his past simulations to pull up a typical jazz bar. Then he changes some of the parameters, then a few more. The Bynars monitoring him saw an opportunity and gave him Minuet for his sole audience member.

    Still have a huge problem with no locking access. A few minutes later for Picard, who knows what he would have walked into.

  • Holodeck settings and scenarios are open source, and it's a big galaxy to pull from.

    But they aren't perfect, as the Bynars showed. Without extra processing, a very detailed Minuet turns into just another holodeck character.
