There will be times when the struggle seems impossible. Alone, unsure, dwarfed by the scale of the enemy. Freedom is a pure idea. It occurs spontaneously and without instruction. Random acts of insurrection are occurring constantly. There are whole armies, battalions that have no idea that they've already enlisted in the cause. And even the smallest act of insurrection pushes our lines forward. Tyranny requires constant effort. It breaks, it leaks. Authority is brittle. Oppression is the mask of fear.

  • Well, you've messed up my claim. Yes, some cats are totally like that, and would never survive on their own. Others wouldn't give their past human servants a second thought if they found themselves outside. Still, they are not right wing.

  • The different LLMs do vary in abilities. What I find amazing is how bad Copilot is compared to any of the others. Not just on complex stuff, but basic requests. I've had local models do better, years ago.

  • Not developing AI. We've been working on and with ANI for a very long time, and constant research on what might make AGI possible. What side railed everything is some companies found out they can do lots of amazing things with LLMs, a subset of AI science, and investors will pay them to make better versions. They talk a lot about how what they're doing will lead to AGI, but these people (or the scientists doing the actual work) know better than that. LLMs can possibly be part of what AGI uses, but it's on the wrong branch. And they've given up following the other branches because this one is paying off.

    So in short, we could have done better (both ethically and core results), but once again money got in the way.

  • The schools don't care. A lot of the teachers do, but jesus, what a system to try and do your underpaid job in. Actually, now that I think about it, it's much like most work environments. Asked to do tasks in not enough time to do it, not given the resources to do it, criticized if there's any complaints about the work or the pay. Oh, and it's got that retail mix in where you are customer-facing and take the heat for what the school is making you do.

  • But paying and asking for permission first would have been costly at the start and slow. They made a decision, maybe at the beginning, maybe as they realized ethical would mean lost time and placement in the race, and they said screw it, let's go. They also sidelined any AI safety research they were doing (some were making an effort on a difficult problem, but again, $$$ wins).

  • Ranked choice type voting needs to be pushed more at the state levels. Some have changed. It's the only way to ever change the higher voting system. The ones in power certainly aren't going to open the door for losing their job.

  • Unless you're running multiple displays. Which I know wasn't a thing in Win95 times, so moving to the left corner with the mouse was a guaranteed contact. I wonder if later 10/11 changed their default to the center for related reasoning, more people using centered taskbar icons in many OSes, including WIndows, and not needing help to find icons.

  • I was trying to reply to this, bringing up the controversy that erupted when image generators were able to use prompts with artist names to simulate their style, and how that shows how blurry the copyright line is. As I wrote it, I realized how complicated the issue really is, and how little I understand current copyright laws. Some may argue there isn't any vagueness, an artist's work in any format is theirs and shouldn't be copied for other use, training or otherwise. But we all use other people's work in our own, don't we? There is no solid line where one is ethical and one isn't. Plagiarism without proper attribution has always been wrong, but if you take the same content and tweak it a bit, it's not. LLMs can and do that, through statistical randomness, while using someone else's material, just like human brains would.

    The compensation issue is definitely a problem and where the ethics come into play. Even if many people freely read a book in a library, it has been bought at some point. But how do you determine who was unfairly "stolen" from? Isn't it basically everyone at this point?
