There will be times when the struggle seems impossible. Alone, unsure, dwarfed by the scale of the enemy. Freedom is a pure idea. It occurs spontaneously and without instruction. Random acts of insurrection are occurring constantly. There are whole armies, battalions that have no idea that they've already enlisted in the cause. And even the smallest act of insurrection pushes our lines forward. Tyranny requires constant effort. It breaks, it leaks. Authority is brittle. Oppression is the mask of fear.

  • Now you just need to automate it. Not with AI, never would trust that, but mapping out like some robot vacuums do to know where they've been. Or maybe sensors to detect where the edge is by grass height, much like us humans would mow.

    The issue is having an almost perfect yard to do this in. Flat, no major obstacles, no debris. It's why I never automated my vacuum with pets in the house... if you know, you know.

  • Along with other bottlenecks once thought to be humans on the brink of extinction, like with the Toba eruption, further research tends to find other evidence to reverse the extreme nature speculated on. We do on the other hand have evidence of other species that had bottlenecks caused from disasters and the genetic signs are very obvious. Cheetahs as an example.

  • I like the idealistic idea behind UBI too, but I think the wealth gap will persist and grow more, with any form of UBI or other welfare as an excuse that the poors are being provided for, so they should be happy with that. The UBI on Earth in The Expanse is what we may end up with. The reason the population on Mars is better and doesn't rely on that is because it's much smaller and has a common purpose for long term focus and employment (terraforming). Interestingly, the canon for Star Trek might be along similar lines, as the Federation and the rest that follows only happens after the devastation of World War III.

    When Draper visits Earth she learns that the Martian impression of UBI recipients being lazy isn't true at all, they're just trapped in the system with only a few able to claw their way out. By design, can't have everyone prosper, the rich might have to settle for less.

  • From the aspect of starting over with the existing world, we've depleted most of the much easier resources we had to work with the first time around, so the second climb up technology's ladder would be far harder, maybe even impossible. Reuse and salvage is one route we would take, but some materials can't be. Either they can't be recycled or reclaimed, or like some alloys we've made can't be just melted down and reused, some even can't be reshaped. So many things require an existing and running infrastructure to just make these things.

    The first episode of James Burke's Connections series touches on this. Things we don't even think about that support civilization because we've built up around them for centuries, and a lot of it in the most recent century. Starting from base level is far more difficult than the first time around... and like I said, before we had much different resources around us to support the growth.

  • And no cargo. There's not much room as drawn for anything else. The center of gravity with an engine up front would be fun. Maybe not impossible, the A310 couldn't fly empty and was a pain to get the CG back enough.

  • Depends on where it is, how it's cut, and the size mainly. The biggest issue I see with a corner lot is you have two sides of your property that aren't really yours, since the street takes up some of the "right-of-way", aka ditches and such. I could be wrong, but I always thought that and other reasons make the value of a corner lower, so the cost as well.

  • His name seems to always be connected to the wrong side of bettering society. Maybe that should be addressed next election. So wish we had a universal fast track way from local to President to call for no confidence when they repeatedly work against the public good.

  • Yes. But I think it's possible to find 50k property. Just don't expect much of it and to be near anything. A tiny house on a corner parcel that no one else wants.

  • The issue is how accurate they can be. Even human police make the mistake of thinking they saw someone on a phone or not wearing a seatbelt, and I do not trust AI to do better. Speeding or reckless driving is a bit more obvious, and a crackdown on that would be helpful, as it's not the law that reduces it, but the enforcement, and how often do we drivers see something on the road happen and think "sure wish a cop was around to see that". For things like taillights or brake lights out, accuracy is the thing again, but rather than a ticket, a notice would be helpful. Just like a cop would do and give you a chance to fix it now that you know.

    Not that I'm a fan of large scale surveillance. I think it can and is abused past the base purpose. But if it could be used only for the simplest enforcement of safety, that would be acceptable.

  • As a Gen-X, you're damn right. Remember, the cloud just means someone else's computer. On some occasions that's okay, like a secure backup that's encrypted. The rest, only put what you 1) don't mind everyone seeing, and 2) don't care if you lose.

  • It's not a both sides but more a larger scale comment on society as a whole. But fit it however you want to fit it. I could have gone into detail on how not everyone can control the damage they do. Some can absolutely make a large difference by their actions. But as for generations, which is what this thread is mostly about, we all have been a problem during the times when we could have done better. The ones with real power want the infighting among us because it's a distraction, and again, it is our fault if we fall for that again and again.
