  • I love vultures so much! Nature's garbage crew.

I will have to go with palmetto bugs, sorry guys you freak me out so bad and I think there are other bugs that turn leaves into dirt without being nightmare fuel.

  • In the basket!

We named him Legolas because he is brave as an elf, so brave. And also because our other cat is Kimchi and we wanted the names to sound different so they can recognize them.

  • We received a kitten through the universe's cat delivery service and he is just an absolute joy.

Under a pound when he arrived, strong & healthy now. Pictures don't really do justice to his cuteness, he's so brave, unbothered by our big dog, loves our other cat and she tolerates him well too, unbothered by us handling him.

  • It's just a physical sensation, and amplifies my pleasure during sex, adds intensity in a good way, I'm surely not alone in that. So to me, it's not simply the physical sensation of any pain that is suffering, since some amount is pleasurable. It's not just a sex thing though, presumably you like spicy food, that involves some level of pain but is enjoyable.

Unpleasantness combined with pain causes me to suffer.

  • I tend to agree with Wikipedia. Pain is tricky, some can be enjoyable in certain contexts, so you are right that it's a response to the stimulus more than the physical sensation.

But combined with "unpleasantness" it's spot on. When I get a migraine I am suffering even if I try to adjust my mind to accept it differently, it's unpleasant no matter how I slice it. It's one of the feelings humans seem wired for.

  • Desert Dwellers

I used to have a playlist called Psybient, loved it for sleep music - I didn't make it, it was on Google Play Music and was lost when they changed to YouTube Music. Wish I could remember more of the artists on there.

  • Not like that, no. But we do live out there to some extent, have a nice back deck and garden. Not the sort of lawn that is the monoculture carpet and no, we don't rake, want bees & butterflies, dragonflies, lizards, snakes, all sorts of other creatures use the yard and no, perfect is not the goal.

To be fair, I'm not that crazy about the inside of the house, either.

  • Absolutely not. I was dismayed when they finally found me to send an invitation to what would have been a THIRTY year reunion, that's how long I dodged them. Really probably the worst hours of my life were high school, and I've been through plenty. It just sucked and teenagers feel everything so much. Not that I didn't have any friends, but the overwhelming feelings I have about those years are trauma & dread. Fuck no.

  • One of my kids had a pretty big birthday party once, they were at a very nearby elementary and lots of kids and parents showed up, I had made a cake with lemon curd, and one of the dads looked at me suspiciously while eating it then said "you make this lemon curd? " I said "Yessir" and he nodded like I had passed some sort of test, it was funny. Turned out he really liked to bake, was a good cake-maker himself.

  • If you are an omnivore foodie, gumbo. It impresses me, the depth and complexity of flavor in gumbo is delicious and very "me" if that makes sense, so it is something of myself I am giving to you.

If you are vegan foodie, a cream of mushroom soup made with cashew cream and fancy mushrooms, and some fresh sourdough bread (THE bread, as my kids put it) with a small salad of something fresh from the garden.

If you are my penultimate child and her girlfriend, apparently kimchi grilled cheese, I made them that once and they kept making it forever after, it is a ridiculously delightful sandwich.

Always something I personally like, for sure. I am a pretty experienced home cook at this point though. If you are not, I recommend the menu "Foods of Michochuan are Forever" on NPR, it has something for the meat eaters and the vegans, is outrageously good, uses ingredients that are available, and can be staged ahead of time and just reheated and make rice day of, so that you can enjoy yourself not be cooking all day. The soup I cheat with canned beans and canned tomatoes it's great.

  • The pilot on Farscape, and the Martians on Sesame Street.

  • Environmental pollution. All the different sorts of environmental pollution.

  • If you live in a state that allows single men to foster and adopt, that is one possibility.

And yes I'm sure paid surrogates can work with single guys. There are agencies for those.

    Good luck to you.

  • Same. Experience is why the pay gets better and getting experience does suck, but all those mistakes and problems pay off in knowledge and judgement.

  • I think the Bruderhof people are the most authentic Christians in the modern world. They are communist (live in community without personal property) and are a cult of Christ.

  • This was true for me as a woman as well. Like when I was younger I was middle good looking, maybe average, but as I got older I moved up because so many people got fat or let go. Like just by maintaining I got relatively better looking compared to peers.

And I can confirm, good looking and fit guys my age are not common but so hot!

  • Emotional regulation. Better pay, if you have been able to work consistently. Kids older, easier to deal with. Happier, and can make better decisions because we are not so hotheaded.

  • How old? I am rapidly nearing 60 and have considerably less pain than when younger because the migraines have nearly vanished and I do yoga instead of running. No chronic pain yet.

Perhaps having negative expectations helped as well, I was sure by now I'd have osteoporosis from early eating disorder, pain in joints from years of ballet, none of these shoes have dropped yet. I do feel weaker than my 40s which were my peak but not weaker than my 30s. And so, so much less pain with fewer migraines.

  • My favorite are the Kushiel trilogy, anything by Ian McDonald, almost anything by Adrian Tchaikovsky or Michael Carey. Though it's difficult to pick.

Currently reading The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet by Becky Chambers.
