  • Sometimes I can be kinda pedantic

  • Literally why I started off my comment talking about the difference between peaceful and fair.

Because many people would consider "peaceful" to mean "without physical violence" in this context - so I described what that could be. Something china is actually actively in the process of doing.

Idk how that means I have my head up my ass. One of us is using the wrong definition for that idiom.

  • You have a crazy definition of "advocate".

Apparently if you describe it, that is considered "advocacy" even if you explicitly denounce it.

  • Why are you conflating "peaceful" with either "act of peace" or "good"? I explicitly said it wasn't fair, eg that it's unethical and I don't support it.

All I'm saying is that China has a clear path to stop the world from getting involved if they do decide to invade, and that China has had recently success taking over countries with little violence.

So your framing this as though I'm a Gretzky supporter is kinda wild.

  • It's almost like you intentionally misunderstood my comment to make a point.

Would it be an act of peace? Absolutely not.Would it be peace_ful_, if you ignore everything else I said in my comment? Absolutely not.

But if OP is looking for the most peaceful (least bloodshed) way of "unifying" Taiwan and mainland China, then this is how. Remove Taiwan's value to the west, propaganda tf outta the next gen, come in with overwhelming force as the world looks on and does nothing, install pro-china govt officials, ramp up propaganda, withdrawal blantant military force.

I explicitly said this was not fair eg it would be bad and unethical so this isn't something I support obviously.

  • Peaceful or fair?

For peaceful, I think that China needs to make it so the world doesn't depend on them for high end chip manufacturer, so the USA stops caring about them because they're not a critical strategic national interest. Then they just invade.

The world isn't doing shit about Gaza, the world is barely doing anything about Ukraine. I think the world sits by and watches it happen, if they're not a critical strategic interest.

  • Naw, I think a few of the original members are still there

  • So, not "technically" at all (see my user name)

  • Oh get over yourself

  • Short form is cool because it's like constrained writing.

Tiktok was pretty great while it was just silly videos.\ But it's not short form anymore so it's full of political essays and propaganda.

I kinda hope that loops is more like vine than tiktok or vertical YouTube. But it'll probably be up to the instance to govern video length.

  • I'll need to look into it a bit more, but I'm skeptical that this will work in practice:

How can they confirm that I'm the owner of the passport? How do you prevent them from selling the fields they requested, that have been uniquely linked to you? How do you prevent the government from keeping track of all the services you're using?

  • Ah, I suppose it is.

So I suppose I should direct my grievance at OP for being too narrowminded. There may not be a single solution for protecting the kids, but surely cast a wider net than this.

Also fwiw I think that the profit motive only makes an existing problem worse, it's not the cause and therefore removing it isn't the solution. It helps so we should still do it, but we have to be prepared that the job isn't done.

  • Thats true for social media, but social media isn't the only time you want to do age verification.

If you want to see porn or order (legal 😇) drugs for delivery.

And this is just times where the way to "protect kids" is age verification online. There are other times where you want to protect kids too, but doing so is invasive.

  • How would that work online? How would they confirm it's your passport, and that it's a real passport that was really scanned (instead of a browser plugin)?

  • Is it for downloading illegal content? i can't tell

I assume some of it is related to torrenting, but I can't tell which ones and how much. They can't all be for torrenting, right????

  • I'm assuming they also had more family and community than we have. And a lot less social pressure.

I had so much unsupervised time lol.

  • Store a lot of things you never access

    Hope that helps 😌

  • I asked my parents exactly this.

    They said something like

It was possible to live on one salary, so your mother could be a full time stay at home mom. This gave us the energy to be able to follow other passions

Basically 2 people with 2 full-time jobs between them have more energy than 2 people with 3 full time jobs between them.

Mom could volunteer and join clubs while I was at school. Dad could do marathons on the weekend. We could do family activities like camping or skiing because they weren't exhausted by also having to do another 40 hours of work per week between them.

  • Its true, but [politics incoming] it's harder since the nuclear home resulted in the elimination of community, and both parents are forced to work to get by, and it only looks to be getting worse.

Raising kids is great (for many people), but it shouldn't be your entire life. The unfortunate reality is that work and raising kids is the only life many people have access to.

It's also not really the case that parents are "doing it to keep the population up" so the premise is wrong.

But it's funny to imagine it that way
