    Also I miss windows phones. Fuck Microsoft, but they tried something different and imo it worked if you went in with an open mind.

  • It's fine to like harder sci-fi, but don't denigrate soft sci-fi just because you don't like it. Soft scifi is no sloppier in allegory than hard sci-fi is. There are only 7 stories.

    python is one of the few popular languages where presentation is semantic but I'm talking about separating semantics from presentation. you should be able to radically change how you see the code without actually changing the file.

    I should be able to apply a personal style to the code and view it with small indentations, or large indentations, with line widths of 80char or 120char, function args within parentheses or not. I should even be able to localize it into another natural language, or even view and edit it as a flow chart instead of text, all without actually changing the underlying file that contains the semantics.

  • That's way jargon is. If a field uses too much jargon, it raises the bar for entry unreasonably high. Instead of having a decent but imperfect understanding of something, you have no understanding.

  • Code semantic should be separate from code presentation. In other words, tabs vs spaces is a stupid argument.

    We've learned that separating semantics and presentation is good for the code we write but we've never bothered to apply it to languages. Everyone on the team should be able to apply their own formatting preferences without affecting the underlying file.

  • I do enjoy tiktok, although the longer it exists (and the longer it's under American control) the more I feel the negative effects of "the algorithm" in that it's not just building an echo chamber by accident but it's intentionally showing me or not showing me things for their own gain.

    I hope piefed takes off because I like it. But still maybe it's for the best that I use it as an excuse to disconnect completely from social media

  • Automatic personalized feed curation, imo, would make it better, based on tags added by the author, by the reader, and by automatic classification, which is then weighted against your previous interaction with posts with those tags and explicit user preferences regarding those tags.In other words, an option for an automatic personalized feed algorithm. But people here (and the devs) are against it because it's a boogeyman.

    That said piefed at least lets multiple tags be added to a post where Lemmy doesn't, so that's the minimum bar for something like what I'm describing.

    But it's a chicken and egg problem because the tags aren't helpful for manual or automatic curation until more people actually use them accurately. So tldr I don't have a solution.

  • Bricks and minifigs (company that resells Legos) basically agreed to sell someone's Legos for them but stole them.Reckless Ben got involved and did his thing to drag b&m until they caved, but instead b&m had him falsely arrested for making threats and selling drugs, and now they've charged him with stalking.But reckless Ben's videos exaggerate to the point of intentionally misinforming. Stuff like claiming his sixth amendment is being violated (isn't being told what he is charged with) when really they just hadn't yet given him discovery, at the hearing to determine how to safely give him discovery.

  • I mean curation by community is too coarse. Often communities have a mixture of posts I'm interested in and posts that I'm not.

    The idea of communities makes sense from a moderation perspective, but I don't like it from a feed/search perspective.

  • Nothing good, honestly. My tastes have changed so they're isn't much I've been watching for a long time that I still watch, except for maybe slowmo guys.

    Now I mostly watch stupid little build projects, like project air, rctestflight, bps space, big time, and true north yachts. Some of the people seem maybe a little crazy, but it's nice to watch someone create something novel.

  • I don't like how people talk about The Algorithm™ as though any feed algorithm is inherently a problem and exists to keep people trapped in the app.

    I'd love to have an algorithm automatically curated my feed so I don't have to manually curate it, since the curation tools are so coarse.
