  • Seriously... there will never be a wide-spread year of the Linux desktop. Because that would require lobbying and investments to get devices with pre-installed Linux by default to the clueless majority that doesn't actually know what an OS is anyway.

    And once a Linux distro goes commercial to fill that requirement it is incentivised to implement all the usual crap and enshittification that are missing in Linux normally.

  • Thing is you can often debunk any of these graphs for the same reason. Just a minority of Linux systems actually show up as Linux as the users are usually more inclined to block a lot of stuff for privacy reasons, then often also changing the user agent most tests fall back to.

    In reality the main consumers are a handful of rich people including those owning the corporations and paying off politicians and media while 95% of the people would not consume anything if not forced to do it and are also contributing only a miniscule amount to the total consumption.

    AI is a tool. If it does the job better than other tools that's totally okay. It has so much potential to improve lives.

    If on the other hand it's about artificial general intelligence soon™ hallucinations, "we can totally replace all skilled workers"-fairy tales and other "stop using your brains and eat the slob"-bullshit it just needs to die... alongside the company CEOs snake oil buyers who (not so secretly anymore) dream about getting rid of all those pesky workers they have to pay proper wages.

    And sadly 99% of the narratives we are constantly fed (and yes, that includes such "See Linus now supports AI! AI's winning!!" bullshit stories, when it would be the perfect starting point to actually evaluate AI properly just once...) belong to the second category. Because AI companies in their insanity painted themselves into a corner. Their investments are insane, their market models unsustainable and telling the lie that everyone needs to use their AI and get integrated everywhere-even if it makes zero sense- is basically their only way to salvage something from that shitshow.

    Nice for Windows to support this theoretically but the UEFI standard does not require support for multiple ESPs on a disk, so you will easily find hardware that in fact will simply discover the first ESP then stop. Because actual implementations matter and a lot of them are bad.

    Speaking of bad implementations. We got several manufacturers a few years ago where their UEFI implementation broke and bricked the whole device after editing the EFI entries via efibootmgr exactly as defined by standard. Oh, you wanted to install Linux? Your device is now done because no one ever tested them without anything but the Windows pre-installs.

    Yet two other cases of totally coincidental "This should work but doesn't, must be a Linux issue" artificially created by Microsoft (who after all were one of the driving forces behind UEFI development, also the reason we are still stuck with FAT32 ESPs - the only file system ESPs are required to support by the standard with everything else optional).

    Windows never touched the main EFI entry in my cases

    In the end positive anecdotal experiences don't matter much. If a relevant fraction of users has issues that should not exist when installing Linux (and that obviously don't exist with Windows because here OEMs actually do proper testing here... or it's Windows/Microsoft itself causing the issues (pre-installed key, fast boot shenanigans, hardware that should be supported but randomly isn't etc.)) that's helping to prevent a lot of people from trying it in the first place. And that's by design.

            We have two storages (e.g., SSD): /dev/sda and /dev/sdb.
    
        Install Windows on /dev/sdb (so it creates its own ESP);
    
        Install Linux on /dev/sda (so it creates its own ESP), with a normal/manual partitioning:
        - /boot/ (for Kernels I have 4 GiB+);
        - /boot/efi/ (commonly, from 128 to 512 MiB is enough);
        - Here I normally also have a swap partition, and separate: /home/, /var/;
        - Select Grub to be installed on the /dev/sda;
    
        Boot the Grub in /dev/sda;
    
        Update Grub within Linux, so it finds the Windows EFI on another drive via its os-prober.
    
    
      

    Here, I believe efibootmgr should show the existing EFI, or you could check it manually in /boot/efi after.

    Windows should operate on its own ESP it created on its own storage, and don’t overwrite the Grub.

    At voila!

    Then Windows will fuck up your EFI entries. Which is not a big deal if you know what you are doing but a completely different story for the audience you are explicitly addressing here when you even explain how to check those entries in the first place.

    Also you did not actually mention that fastboot needs to be disabled in Windows, thus a clueless person will not understand the random hardware errors on Linux caused by not properly initialized devices and will blame Linux.

    (And let's not even talk about some of the really insane stuff like pre-installed Microsoft SecureBoot keys that brick you whole system when removed because idiotic OEMs signed their own hardware's EFI drivers with the keys already pre-installed just because they can...)

    So no, it's not "quite odd to see so many people having the issue when Windows". That's what Windows is causing, often intentionally so. Is most of this easily fixable? Sure... But it's a very effective deterrent for many people, so they never reach the point where they understand and be able to fix that stuff.

    Linux’s “security through obscurity” was never going to last.

    As already explained above I did not expect that statement to use the common "long-standing industry term" because -again- it would be utterly insane to claim security through obscurity for something open source.

    Yes, please do.

    The actual notion of "security through obscurity" (that will surely come up on Google if their AI bullshittery hasn't screwed up completely...) for Linux is insane because open source is the polar opposite. By that definition proprietary code is actually much more linked to the concept.

    The often more unprecise and colloquial usage I thus assumed you were using doesn't apply either, for the reasons I summarised.

    So which imaginary definition of "security through obscurity" are you using and assuming that it will come up on Google when none of the real ones makes any sense?

  • You are right. I don't know what your personal definition of "security through obscurity" is as it's very obviously not matching actual reality.

  • There was never an actual notion of "security through obscurity". LInux runs the complete Internet and most coporate server infrastructure. That's where the actual money is.

    People hallucinating that Linux is something obscure simply have no clue and confused their home desktop for real computing. Windows desktops are constantly targeted not because they are -unlike Linux- so wide-spread but because they are already insanely insecure. They are the low hanging fruit where you can cobble together some cheap shit and will still find million of PCs vulnerable. If you want to find a Linux comparison it's definitely not server or desktops but cheap IoT devices not having seen an update (or any security to speak of) for many years.

    For reference: We are talking about guests in a virtual pc escaping it's container. That's not something obcure. That's basically all cloud hoster's whole business model, thus the reason Google pays a lot of money for finding such exploits.
