  • No. Their "here's also this unofficial repository of builds completely maintained by random community users... USE AT YOUR OWN RISK - You have been warned!" ArchUserRepository got the least used (often long abandoned) packages hijacked by some bad actors.

    But "Less than 1% of the least used packages in the unofficial repository you were explicitly warned about got hijacked by people trying to infect oyur PC" would not have been an interesting headline gathering attention.

    Which is either good, if you actually just want something that works, or very bad because you are violating the purity of the Unix way.

  • Don't host the calendar, just host some WebDAV/CalDAV. That format is supported by basically all apps on every platform (usually including the default app on most phones), so everyone can pick what they want (or just stick with what they already use).

    My personal pick for that purpose is Radicale.

  • No, it's actual reality. There are more than a hundred thousand packages in the AUR. There are explicit warnings that these are user content and should be used with care.

    And now a miniscule percentage (~1%) of orphaned packages, so those with very little interest in, are taken over by some malicious actors to spread malware.

    And people suddenly pretend like this is a catastrophe for Linux (no one cares) and for Arch and it's derivates (who don't operate the AUR be definition and explicitly warn against using it without caution). If I told you that not 1, but 10% of the most obscure software packages you can download and install on Windows are pure malware, you wouldn't even blink an eye. And yet all the morons now come crawling from their caves flooding everything with memes and bullshit of "haha, now we know you lied to us and Linux isn't secure at all!".

  • Sadly it's often just marketing. The amount of devices marketed for Windows/MacOS/Linux that runs barely if at all with shitty ported drivers is still much too high.

    As is the amount of hardware perfectly supported by the Linux kernel for more than a decade yet not officially supported at all.

  • While you are right in general, you are just creating a file with a

    <user>

    :

    <hashed password>

    line without any identifying context. So have fun searching the world for where I might have actually used it. Sounds like a really bad use of ressources to create list of passwords.

    PS: Yes, as an Arch user I am still pissed that this tool is not available in the repos beside installing the complete Apache server...

  • The options to password protect it are in the (usually /etc/radicale/)config file under [auth].

    For proper security you could use

    type = htpasswd

    htpasswd_filename = /etc/radicale/users

    htpasswd_encryption = bcrypt

    then create a users file with apache tools (htpasswd -c -B users User1) or one of the million online htpasswd file creators.

  • Thing is it's not actually wasps but just a few very specific kinds of wasps that are assholes ruining the reputation for all.

    Something similiar happens for bees. When people talk about them being endangered nowadays they don't mean the domesticated honey bees many think about (those are cared enough for that populations are rather growing) but the many kinds of wild (and often solitary) bees.

  • I think the Mars argument is backwards. The missing magnetic field is the main issue. More regular flares being faster in stripping away the unprotected atmosphere is inconsequential on the time scale we are talking about.
