  • I use subtitles and I am a native English speaker.. sometimes the actors mumble or get washed out in the mix, or just the room we're watching in is a bit noisy, so being able to read the dialogue helps my brain to pick out what they're saying a lot easier.

  • The sermon is basically open-mic time for the priest. They generally offer commentary on the gospel, how it relates with the other readings/psalms of that mass, current events and so on.

    With the sermon being what it is, it's one of the big ways in which a priest can influence their congregation. The priest doesn't select the gospel, readings, psalms, etc. it's all published in a book called a Missal, and does not change very often, so they can't cherry-pick certain passages etc. Given as well that priests are regarded as (in effect) the "messenger from God", parishioners will often alter their thoughts and behaviours based on these sermons.

    Now, that being said, the priest is that church's "store manager" - hired and appointed by the diocese and is responsible for more than just saying mass, they run the church. Think of what a store manager would do - HR tasks, maintenance, advertising, and so on - is all the head priest's responsibility. If there was no priest to make a sermon, that church would have been shut down.

  • One thing colony management games really don't handle is rot.. so your concept would be really good along with a progression system, so you start with a functioning but failing colony, and have to fix/rip out/rebuild/etc to keep it running, but doing any of that runs the risk of breaking something you might not have known about and so on..

  • Their behaviour is programmed based on the characteristics of the intersection. If it's a very lopsided one where one direction has heavy traffic and the other very little, then the button might trigger a light change.

    Other times, the light timing doesn't change, but the button will trigger the crosswalk to indicate walk after the next change.

    Other behaviours I've seen is it changing the advance green/left turn signal, or showing the walk symbol while all traffic is stopped.

    And then I've seen a few that do appear to do absolutely nothing - but that doesn't mean that's the case. For example, an intersection might have a button that only does something at night when there's very little traffic, but doesn't during the day when the intersection is constantly busy.

  • I've worked at places with <50 people where the 2 IT people had "manager" titles, but they were just "the IT people" in practice - one handled user stuff, the other was focused on the client-facing infrastructure.

    Our lone HR person was also the "HR manager", we had a single "accounting manager", and a couple more like that. Some departments ended up expanding and the "managers" did end up with direct reports, but that's kinda just how small businesses work, this posting sounds a lot like that.

  • I think their opinion is that fries/salad is a lazy choice of sides to complete a meal. A traditional meal is usually a combination of protein, starch, and veg. In that regard, steak+fries+salad is a "meal", but it's definitely low-effort and designed to make people not hungry as cheaply as possible.

    Good restaurants will create thoughtful sides that truly add to the dish, so it doesn't feel like you're eating "steak and some other shit".
