  • Windows Update is a torture chamber for seldom-used PCs

  • Switching to Linux was so helpful. Windows whenever there was an update literally ate up my performance for some reason. 50% RAM just gone (6 GB total). I bet it was just a lack of optimization for less powerful PCs but it was still aggravating

  • Ooh. You bringing up your Fedora issues reminded me of when I dual booted Ubuntu Unity and Windows for a while on my laptop. I had the exact same issue on there

  • I have a hypothesis that it was some niche hardware compatibility issue, because streaming was that machines bare minimum. It had a 32 bit dual core CPU, an iGPU, 4 GB of DDR3 RAM, and a 500 GB HDD. All this was in the year 2020 and this PC was made in 2008, so suffice to say it wasn't winning any awards.

    Like i said though, this is a hypothesis, so it's entirely possible it was just Ubuntu deciding it wanted to freak out on me.

  • I've hopped around. The 3 main ones I've touched though are:

    • Ubuntu (which had the Storage Bug. Especially weird considering the only thing that thing had going on was Firefox for Streaming at the time)
    • Bazzite (which ultimately i switched away from because Halo just wouldn't launch one morning)
    • CachyOS (specifically KDE), which has the issues with WiFi and Bluetooth. From what i understand The Wi-Fi and Bluetooth issues are mostly because Linux doesn't have great Realtek drivers.

    All of which are the Stable Versions. I believe Bazzite and CachyOS are both Rolling Releases which would explain the issues. I don't think Ubuntu is as far as i know which makes it's storage issue especially interesting.

    I also have an issue with Debian on my media server where despite telling it everywhere possible not to go to sleep, it decides it wants to go to sleep anyways. But i don't really consider that under these same issues because that's a media server and i expect it to be a little more "Tinkery" than my Main use PCs.

  • That’s the same thing stopping me from switching my friends from Linux. I know one of them would if I pushed.

    I’ve been daily driving Linux for almost 2 years and also always have a minor issue daily. “Oh. Bluetooth module decided it just didn’t want to work. Better reload. Oh. Reloading doesn’t work? Got to restart. Oh. Now my Wi-Fi has completely crapped the bed and restarts every 5 seconds”.

    Then the major issues are catastrophic, even though rare. I once had a system just start… filling up empty storage at a rate of 1 GB a second with an empty log file. I couldn’t figure out why. Ended up reinstalling everything.

    I don’t mind fixing these issues. And hell, I have fun, but I’m the only computer guy in our group though so I’d be playing tech support for these people if they ever changed.

  • I (20 Year Old Male for context) tried a few except Tinder (I’ve always been told Tinder is just for Hookups).

    Did you find a partner using it? Nope. I met my current partner after ditching the apps, while looking for people to play Stardew with of all things.

    How long did you use it? About a week for each.

    What did you think about it? It struck me as exploitative of people’s loneliness and very reductionist with reducing the process down to something with no human interaction. I’d almost go as far to say it’s dehumanizing.

    How many matches did you get? 1.

    What problems did you see? There’s the aforementioned exploitation. It kind of makes it harder in my opinion to get to know anyone like you would traditionally.

    Do you think it’s a good way to meet other people? I don’t think so. I wouldn’t say it never works, but I don’t think chances are high.

    What did you use it for / what was your intention? I was looking for a long term partner and relationship.

  • US, been all over but currently west coast. My parents grew up slightly Christian/Catholic (By elementary school they became Pagan though). I had never heard of these really

  • My household has a shared calendar we use to plan events. I've thought about a project before just to put a big view version of that up somewhere for people to reference, but I've been hesitant because it's a large household and having to play tech support every time it goes wrong isn't something i can do.

    If i could get a reliable screen on the fridge that could display that, along with maybe a Reminders List and your sticky note idea, that would be perfect. With ads though that's a big nope from me.

    Even excluding my stance on not wanting ads, that's how you find out the 5 year old accidentally bought something, or that something was leaked in a big data leak. That's just something i don't want in my home

  • Now that you suggest the idea, I wouldn’t be surprised. I’ve since booted the guy from my life (or at least as much as I could) but I wouldn’t surprised if this was the case based on some of the things he’s said.

  • I had one friend like this. Basically all he talked about was how much he hates Trump, then come election he said he wasn't voting at all because "Trump is bad, but Harris is worse because she's a woman".

    In the sake of honesty, it wasn't just that. He also said a few times that she's worse than Trump because she claimed to be from a working class family, but almost always it was that she was a woman that was his reasoning.

  • Same. I’m sitting in my college’s library right now trying to work and the outage threw a wrench in all of my plans. I’m thankful I downloaded the files to my hard drive though so I can do most of the work on Pen and Paper

  • 40-70 GBs is the sweet spot for me. My Wi-Fi can download it within a day usually and I can fit a bunch of them onto my 1 TB SSD

  • Were you "popular" in school?

  • I’d say I was? I got along with most everyone and it wasn’t uncommon for me to walk around during lunch break and most people to recognize me

  • My cat passed away recently

  • That’s how I was when my childhood dog passed. So many things I’d do that reminded me of her. At one point, as absurd as it was, I couldn’t play something as basic as Minecraft without having to shut it down because it reminded me of her. Just recently we lost a kitten that wasn’t going to make it, and the space heater we had keeping him warm made me cry whenever I saw it.

    Your cat is very lucky to have been loved like that. I’m sure he knew that

  • I could have sworn I remember hearing the founder died of Covid back when I was in FIRST myself, it’s possible I’m confusing him for someone else though.

    Luckily the robotics team covers all the parts for their robot so he’s getting a bit of the experience
