    If you are leaving a party with many people? First say goodbye to the host, then announce it to everyone. "It's time for me to leave. Was great seeing everyone again!"

    Always say goodbye to the host, just leaving is in my opinion a bit rude. People may disagree on this.

    I have a counterpoint to those claiming that paid are better. By using a privacy oriented search engine, then they don't know exactly who you are. In theory just your IP. Maybe fingerprinting.

    When paying they know exactly who you are. You have to trust them.

    So in one case you can protect yourself, in the other you have to trust them.

    Also, Kagi also uses the Russian index Yandex 😑

  • If you are confident you can be a bit embarrassing and people just like you more for it. You are open, unique, a bit quirky and cute. They laugh with you, not at you. At work people lower their guards around you and you get people to deliver quality and get shit done. Being well liked and often right is a killer combo in the engineering world.

    Embrace the cringe, so that the cringe just becomes embarrassing, then it becomes good times and team building.

  • Thats good. I try to use the opportunities like this to inform people a bit, because it is hard to know.

    The efficient market hypothesis is so incredibly useful, and saves people from hubris and bad investment decisions. It always grounds me when I think about other investments and financial decisions as well.

  • You might be correct, and you might be mistaken. However according to the efficient market hypothesis, the news have already been priced in. It is in other words too late.

    An average professional stock market trader with excellent tools and information at his/her disposal is correct 50% of the time.

    If you are correct 51% of the time you are really good. 52% excellent, 53% maybe close to world class.

    The best us normies can do is trust the efficient market hypothesis, and buy low cost global index funds and hold for decades.

    I have a logical view of the universe as deterministic and that nothing matters, but my feelings contradict this, which is fine.

    However, the thought that life HAS to have meaning as something negative is a new perspective, in that it implies moral and ethics.

  • Kudos for trying to stay in the marriage. Not because of the oath, but for yourself. I can imagine that the hurt must have been immense and that the temptation to leave and start fresh was big.

    When I was younger this was black and white for me. As I have grown older I have realized that life is not that simple. I have been fortunate enough to not experience this myself, but after a relationship for 11 years I can understand why people stay after cheating.

    It's so easy for someone to say that it is black and white on social media. You see it all the time with all sorts of things related to relationships and human behaviour.

    Having your perspective in this is really valuable, thanks for sharing.

  • If you want out of the marriage, then this is the time. No point in working on a marriage you don't want.

    If you want to stay then:

    Couples counselling. Seriously. It is not cheap, but it's a lot cheaper than a divorce. It also resolves unhealthy tension and issues in the relationship. You might even get out of it with a lot better marriage than before you cheated.

    Do that for a long time. Show that you care by taking initiative, and resolve this with a counsellor and your spouse.

    I also believe it is possible to regain trust, and to forgive.

    You did a bad thing, but don't let it define you. Now you got to set it right, show her that you actually care about her. Do the hard work and make the relationship stronger than ever.

    You should not tell anyone you cheated, if your wife does, then you have to accept that. She might feel that this affects her honor and standing amongst other people. So let her decide if people should know or not.

    Anyways, good luck! Be patient and be kind. You can do it! 👍

  • Logically I am a determinist and a nihilist. It's the only thing that makes sense to me.

    But I can't live life like that. Life is lived through feelings and it feels like I have free will. So I feel meaning by contributing positively and that my choices in life matter.

    So, I contribute, try to do good, be helpful and nice to people, and also fulfill some hedonistic desires such as good food, lovemaking, shows, etc.

  • One can be against the capitalist system, but as long as it exists and one has to participate, then Jack Bogles introduction of low cost index funds changed investments for regular people. Paying <0.3% yearly in costs is a huge improvement.

  • I guess it depends on the ones in power. There is a theoretical possibility that the ones in power acts altruistically for the good of the people.

    History however has proven totalitarian countries as brutal regimes, before it inevitablably collapses.

    One of the reasons it can't be for the good of the people is that it needs to pay supporters a lot more.

    If you are a dictator, you have to constantly bribe your supporters (military, oligarchs etc). If you don't, they will replace you with another dictator that will. So the system will inherently be corrupt and not to the benefit of the people.

    Any actions that benefit the people comes from a fear of riots and revolution. In other words it's a delicate balancing act.

    Things might be different now and in the future due to more advanced surveillance, personalized propaganda, drones and robotics. Different in that it can be more oppressive than previously.

  • I don't think PeerTube will take a significant market share or become a lot more popular until it gets some sort of monetization scheme in place. Maybe if bandwidth for 1080p is basically free in 10-20 years.

    Just a friendly headsup about Odysee. You are probably aware already and are selecting content carefully based on this, but Odysee hosts a lot of content that is considered disinformation, hate speech, far-right etc.

    I subscribe to some people on PeerTube and Dailymotion (only news orgs) alongside my Youtube subs, so that I am not only relying on YouTube

  • I agree in principle, society is demonizing nudity and sex. This has got to change. Society needs to change in order to fix this and many other issues related to sex and nudity.

    As long as it affects a persons reputation and their standing, this is a problem. Any person can harm someone with this technology, and as a society we can not accept that.

    Most people could not make a decent fake sex tape with any person in the world with low effort before. Now they can.

    Should creating deepfakes for personal consumption be legal/illegal? Distribution is the real problem. The rest is fantasizing with tools more or less. Some people will understandably not like it if they find out other people fantasize about them, but that is close to thought crime. What is acceptable? Is a stickdrawing with names too much? What if I am really good at realistic drawings? What if I draw many images in a book and make a physical animation of ouf it? Is the limit anything outside my head? What if I draw a politician fellating another one and distribute it as art/satire?

    The short term solution is to ban deepfakes, the long term is probably something else, but I am not sure what. There is not inherently any actual abuse in deepfakes, there is no actual sex either. So it's a reputational/honor and disgust thing. These things still matter a lot in societies, so we can't ignore it either.
