  • One of the reasons horror is celebrated is because it’s art imitating life. Often, it makes people feel uncomfortable, and the way they express that fear is worrying life will imitate art.

    Sadly, it probably has happened before, but never without a long basis of hatred and mental health issues. The bigger question to me is how many people would like to see less of horror tropes, to the point that we don’t see violence against women on screen - but the rate of it in our alleyways remains unchanged.

    We can think of it a bit like Childish Gambino in “This is America” taking a gun from his pants, shooting a bound prisoner, and then gently putting the gun on a pad. It’s not supposed to feel cool. It’s supposed to make you feel uncomfortable because it reflects something we don’t like to talk about. To me, making casual jokes surrounding fictional killers isn’t going much further.

  • I’ll have to be cautious about this advice, as I’m not a therapist, but: Ask for help with something. Any task they could be more qualified for, or that you need a second person, rely on them a bit. When they help you, thank them wholeheartedly, even with a gesture like a gift.

    People like to feel that they’re needed and appreciated, that they have some worthiness in people’s eyes. But don’t fault yourself for lack of this action - it’s impossible for everyone to do this for everyone they know, and self-harmful minds do a lot to hide themselves.

  • I’ve tried, man. I at least got better at socializing in a common atmosphere, so I don’t feel so distant, but many people just don’t reciprocate communications. I invite a repeating occasion for people, and they’ll need 8 reminders or just not show up, to the point I don’t bother. When I realize I’m always the initiator, I decide that connection isn’t important to them.

    God forbid a deeper need like confessing to traumas or needing emotional support. Some of the slightest favors I’ve asked of people have been too much. All the “above and beyond” actions I’ve ever seen in my life where people do things for one another have been in fictional media, never between actual human beings.

  • Oh, this is just one of them; there should be two other keyholes. When the three medallions of the Founding Patriots are reconfigured into their true form as Keys of Genesis and inserted in these keyholes, they unlock the way to the Path of Radiance, at the end of which is a power capable of turning back the Antichrist.

  • I’m always a sucker for scenes that show people are better than people give them credit for. The scene in Spiderman 2 when the subway car passengers refuse to give up a fainted Peter to Doc Ock is a good example; another is in The Dark Knight, when Joker tries to get two ferries to detonate the other one’s bombs, and neither does.

    I get annoyed when someone posts a “side” I agree with, but uses a complete zero-thought, easily-defeated argument to defend it. A classic one is “If buying isn’t owning, then pirating isn’t stealing.”

  • I’m really glad that it prompts more ideas from people. I think in my vision, the journey is less about being a touching, violin-strung struggle of a poor woman surviving with only the shirt on her back.

    Rather, making it to a doctor is rather early in the story, when she receives the opinion that no medical knowledge in the land can save him, and she’d need to study the world and invent her own treatment to have any hope. As a result, her persistence and all-encompassing expertise ends up making her into something of a legend.

    The idea of someone going to all lengths for a victimized beloved is, in part, based on a real legend who sadly didn’t get their happy ending; a human trafficking investigator named Susan Trimarco, who started her work to find her own missing daughter.

  • There’s several pieces of media I’ve consumed lately where on a second review, I can see: “This makes little sense. This is a lazy connection, this line could’ve been worded much better” yet it doesn’t matter since I still remember my heavy reaction on first viewing, and can see other strong reactions.

    A big part of that is how well the story itself sets up for core moments, even if some of the pieces are clumsy.

  • I do think a lot of modern media embraces “unexpected death” tropes a bit too much. When done well, it can emphasize the harshness of a world and drive ambition to right things. Done wrong, it actually depletes the stakes because a lot of the motivation and interest was in saving the person that was just killed.

    Breaking Bad, and Danganronpa V3, are some examples of where I felt the latter.

    That said, it suspends belief sometimes when readers realize anyone in the main cast has plot armor. To me, part of that remedy is occasional deaths, but part is to just not invent frequent hanging-by-thread situations, and then frequent deus ex machina to exit them.

  • My design path started from the idea of “An open world game, with a chain to keep you broadly on a certain path”. So you can explore, but should never go TOO far from your moving “home point”.

    I’m sure many gamers will decry not having total freedom to go anywhere, but I’ve found some of the best stories in games do require some restriction on player freedom. So, yknow, live with it.

    The basic idea I have is of a woman in love with a traveling doctor, who falls ill, and enters a coma. She loads him into a small wheeled caravan, and starts a journey across open lands, initially to locate another doctor familiar with his condition, but then eventually to verse herself in experimental medicine enough to cure him herself. On the way, she learns basic swordfighting, other strange recipes and brews, and meets a variety of societies; some great, some selfish. There’s heartbreak and sacrifice, but in the end the Doctor is cured from his coma.

  • I’ve made a lot of stuff, but it doesn’t always fit in community art channels because its usually not a single visual.

    For years in school/college I made Garry’s Mod / SFM animations. I was slow at it, and the subject matter was often something dumb, but a few times I made big hits. I had large gaps where I didn’t have inspiration for big lengthy animations and instead uploaded silly gameplay clips or whatever seemed funny at the time, but my old channel is visible here:

    I finally decided I didn’t want my whole creative legacy to be based around manipulation of a single game company’s models, so I wrote a book. It’s on Nook, Kobo, and several other sites (not Amazon) and called Rangers of the Frostscape.

    That said, slow feedback and low visibility hit me maybe more than it should have. I’ve seen many artists make things for the joy of creation, which I had to admit wasn’t what I was doing. Fighting purely for popularity is a doomed venture these days.

  • I kind of think car crashes could fit pretty well into my horror movie idea, Sanewashing; in which an amateur serial killer is clumsily killing people, but an overbearing sense of “normalcy” is preventing people from panicking or investigating, just viewing the deaths as tragedies rather than mysteries.

    Something that could be thematic is to just have someone hear about a friend being killed, and be completely on edge; but then hear it was a car crash, and all tension releases.
