Founder of European Graphic Novels, Aug '23 on Lemm.ee. Still going strong, now on PieFed. :D

I prefer to lean friendly & understanding, yet as someone dealing with a terminal disease, I'll admit that irritability can happen fast. Eh, nous faisons ce que nous pouvons. 🙄

  • Damn, that's disappointing.

Jim is so good when he's taking on guns, idiot politics, crazy stories, and all that... I'm seriously baffled why he'd shift to women as a punching bag.

You mentioned Maher, another comic I used to love, and I can't help feel you're right on the button with that analogy. It's like he came out hitting home runs, and then fell in love with the idea that he automatically had prescient things to say about society.

    Something like that, anyway.

  • Right at the :16 mark, the idea that tickets for women are 'easy'

...and then it gets worse and worse from there, like he has to double-down-dunk in order to keep propping up his point.

    Fucking embarrassing, mate.

  • He's absolutely not a shock comic. What a ridiculous take.

His comments on gun control, politics, and whatever else have been leading edge for quite a while, hence my bafflement, here.

  • everyone's mind of course always goes to sex

    it's not sex-related

  • Ricepaper wraps are... the MF bees-knees to me.

Whatever you do, just don't ask what a girl once said to me when she was tasting some rice-wrapper treats.

  • Looks pretty good, but more cheese is definitely called for.

Also, your crust is way too thick.

    --Facetious Jones

  • Not even cousins. Brothers. One fermented hot. The other cold.

TIL!Dang, so how did you learn about that, anyway?

But I knew logically it would work despite my instinct saying “Noooo!”

I can't imagine a life lived as a curious person not pushing Mister Envelope. All hail the curious, daggit.

Oh btw, do they have turmeric root in your area? They started featuring it at my local super, and I gotta tell you that it's wildly, unexpectedly delicious! Just crunch on the root if one likes as a simple snack (much less forgiving then garlic & ginger), or throw it in whatever. I find it a million times tastier than nasty, dried turmeric, but I think I kinda figured that one out by trial & error.

That is, I was wanting to save some root for later, so decided to dehydrate via my AF. What I discovered is that the simple removing of water (and low heat perhaps?) made it taste worse and worse along the way.

As Dick Proenneke ("Alone in the Wilderness") might have said, sometimes it takes an old fool to discover these things. :D

  • Yes indeedy to the sunflower seeds, altho I'd recommend toasting them in the air-fryer first to maximise crunchiness.

I also love the 'tzatziki sauce' angle with the cuke, dill and sour cream (plus feta, kinda), and what I've found personally is that unflavored Greek yogurt is an adequate sub if you can train your palate on it over time a little bit. I.e., much less kcals, and loads of gut probiotics.

Cool idea, in any case. And now I can't remember if "craisins" are meant as dried cherries or dried cranberries. I've had both, so...

  • Top of my FUN list!

(when I get bored, that's where I look)

  • You've come up with a wonderfully-fertile premise IMO.

I'll be curious to see how it moves ahead...

  • Super-creative and amusing, with a lovely nod to familiar mythology.

    3.75/5 ⭐'s

  • They ARE NOT just energy, and are in every single cell wall of your body. They are far more important than an energy source.

    Go ahead and explain, please.

Aside from that, you seem to have missed the whole premise of what I was really pointing out, above-- that complex carbs in the forms I mentioned are about as unhealthy a way of taking in simple & complex sugars as one could possible want, i.e. almost all fibre, vitamins and minerals have been stripped away, leaving a form that contributes to diabetes, long-term.

THAT was the main point(s) I was making. I've certainly nothing against resistant starches and grains that retain as much of their whole selves as possible.

  • "Silk has evolved independently many times, with at least 23 separate origins in insects alone," Wasserman explained, including ants, bees, and wasps.

    TIL. oO

  • White beans are underestimate, tell you hwat..!!

  • This comic scares me in a way that TNG never did.

It's almost like Data up there on stage, trying to learn from Joe Piscopo...

  • Good points. I've heard borderline horror-stories from expats trying to find Euro-style or authentic whole-grain bread in Japan, in particular.

And yeah, here in the States it seems a lot more common to deep-fry tofu, which is health-wise arguably a much worse way to consume it than it's usually made in EA. Actually one of the reasons I love air-fryers is that they offer something of a healthier compromise, with much less oil typically required.

  • Carbs are sugars. Just more complex than simple sugars. That's why carb-rich diets can still be terrible on health over time, regularly messing with glycemic load and constituting 'empty calories.' So, even worse than a pre-diabetic source, as I mentioned.

I'd recommend you do a modern nutrition course to catch up on this stuff, because science & nutrition is way past the simple idea of calories-in / calories-out. The fact is that the FORM of the calories matter hugely, with processed foods in general being pretty bad on health, long-term. These are what the studies collectively say.

  • As someone who's studied and regularly thought about nutrition for years, I definitely see junk food being a significant problem in East Asia, just as with other parts of the world.

    • Noodles are usually made from the starchy part of the grain, and are therefore low in fibre, vitamins & minerals, plus high in salt.
    • White rice is similar, just less processed. Both of those are glycemic aggregators, and I understand diabetes is sadly common in white-rice eating cultures.
    • Tofu has that healthy reputation, but not only is it a processed food retaining a lot less of just about everything desirable in soy beans, it also tends to be fried, with high-salt, high-fat, high-sugar sauces added for flavor.
    • Most bread everywhere is a lot like the noodles problem.
  • Never heard of 'em, but bonne chance..?
