Founder of European Graphic Novels, Aug '23 on Lemm.ee. Still going strong, now on PieFed. :D

I prefer to lean friendly & understanding, yet as someone dealing with a terminal disease, I'll admit that irritability can happen fast. Eh, nous faisons ce que nous pouvons. 🙄

  • Carbs are sugars. Just more complex than simple sugars. That's why carb-rich diets can still be terrible on health over time, regularly messing with glycemic load and constituting 'empty calories.' So, even worse than a pre-diabetic source, as I mentioned.

I'd recommend you do a modern nutrition course to catch up on this stuff, because science & nutrition is way past the simple idea of calories-in / calories-out. The fact is that the FORM of the calories matter hugely, with processed foods in general being pretty bad on health, long-term. These are what the studies collectively say.

  • As someone who's studied and regularly thought about nutrition for years, I definitely see junk food being a significant problem in East Asia, just as with other parts of the world.

    • Noodles are usually made from the starchy part of the grain, and are therefore low in fibre, vitamins & minerals, plus high in salt.
    • White rice is similar, just less processed. Both of those are glycemic aggregators, and I understand diabetes is sadly common in white-rice eating cultures.
    • Tofu has that healthy reputation, but not only is it a processed food retaining a lot less of just about everything desirable in soy beans, it also tends to be fried, with high-salt, high-fat, high-sugar sauces added for flavor.
    • Most bread everywhere is a lot like the noodles problem.
  • Never heard of 'em, but bonne chance..?

  • Uh... BEL because of Tintin et al.FRA because of BD, and just being a Francophile in general.

  • I have a terminal disease, with my focus & energy being pretty much the first things impacted. I did appreciate a couple folks above who seemed to be in the know doing their best to explain, which wound up opening the conversation for others.

    So... just sayin' that, too.

  • Thank you!And IMO that would be an exceedingly strange takeaway as I see it in general, pigeons being some classic Pavlovian-exhibiting animals as it were. So then, perhaps what's being suggested here is that they're more exploratory and exhibit much more free will and unpredictability than previously imagined..?

    Or something like that?

  • TL;DR..?

  • Make sure it includes his sausage fingers so I can tell it's him!

  • Love the concept, but... would have been nice to see a more accurate version of the lights. This one looks like someone spent no more than 10seconds doing a very basic marker sketch for the lights.

Another idea would be to do glow in the dark figures of previous subjects, like a moose, a goose, a beaver, etc.

  • Like many things in life, it's not necessarily an either-or situation. Personally, Reddit is still enormously useful to me for a variety of reasons, and it's well worth putting up with various difficulties in order to keep getting the benefits.

And I say that as someone who's put hundreds of hours in to content creation here, the past three years.

  • That's no fluff, that's detail from a Renaissance-era marble sculpture!

    Nice try, OP. 🙂

  • I must say it's got a certain, satisfying 'medieval heft,' too. (the one I have has a ~14" square head, damn)

Probably a quarter of the tools I've collected over the years I rarely use, but they're so well-made, look & feel great in the hand that I keep 'em around. My peel is kind of an honorary member of that crew.

  • Hah, same brand I have. I only regret I haven't used it much for pizza over the years, but on the flip side, I've found it unexpectedly handy for moving various small foods from one surface to another. Sort of a "mise en place" & charcuterie helper.

    Awesome find.

  • Normalizing monopoly.

  • Definitely related to Heathcliff...

  • Bushmiller does something really interesting, here. Most cartoonists IME would have had the lady pretty dramatically reacting to bowed-Nancy's presence, but instead, he merely adds a couple worry lines in her forehead and slightly pouts her mouth, and it's enough.

    Just masterful.

  • Sounds compelling! Surely some historians have dived in to it..?

  • I'll give it a shot based on wrestling with this issue a lot across 500+ comics posts:

    1. Just in general, I don't think this comic is a good fit here for a number of reasons.
    2. Specifically, most comics shared here are 'quick-hitters' that can occupy a single window. Those cater to both mobile users as well as casual browsers, both of which describe the majority here, I believe.
    3. Usually there's a funny or interesting point being made, and users feed off that to get their little rush of feelings and/or a sense of something interesting... possibly something interesting to think about for a while.
    4. Ambiguous comics or things that don't fit in to the square box of preconceived notions can actually upset people, or at least cause them the irritation to downvote.
    5. I find this comic to be quality work, but also on the experiential or almost meditative side. I think it would be better appreciated on a sublemmy devoted to such, or on a tennis community.

There's also just the plain fact that readers, scrollers and voters can get addicted to the casual scrolling process, and when they feel their time is being drawn away from that process, can be impolite assholes about it. In terms of voting, anyway. And/or they're saying "I don't appreciate this type of content and I don't want to see it here again."

    Hope that helps!@roserose56@lemmy.zip
