  • I don't wanna be pedantic but most things we call REST aren't REST. The original definition of REST is what we typically call HATEOAS. So when you say JAON API almost always means not REST you need to qualify that.

  • You are not legally allowed to use GMRS if you or someone in your immediate family doesn't have a license and I would never ever ever dream of violating the FCC rules. I would never. I would never ever have FRS radios use more bandwidth and/or power if their firmware allowed. I would never use them without call signs if I did, but I wouldn't do it because I don't!

  • Today I learned about meshtastic, a long range off-grid open-source communication platform

  • Meshtastic is cool, I haven't gotten into it. It's all license free. I say that because some other radio based hobbies need a license (GMRS and ham).

    Folks looking into it, many of the devices use Bluetooth to communicate with a phone or computer so you don't need to type messages directly on the device, but the technology is still off grid. There are totally self contained devices you can type on directly. I just wanted to mention that because seeing "off grid" then seeing them pairing with phones can be confusing. It's truly only to enter messages and keep devices a little cheaper and easier to use.

  • I don't think it is, and I'm not saying they don't have their place, I'm just a bit of a hater of dynamic types, like in a fun way, I don't think they're the bane of existence or anything. I just really love static typing.

  • I've gotten really into radio over the past year or so. The most practical usage I've gotten is a few FRS radios (licence free walkie talkies, like what we used as kids basically) at a renn fest that has no cell service and at a pride event when someone didn't wanna take their phone to a porta potty (better to risk accidentally drop a $10 radio into the toilet than an expensive smart phone with all your pictures).

  • Power bricks or USB bricks. A dongle is an adapter, so it has some sort of thing on each side (besides a power plug lol).

    I thought I made it clear I didn't necessarily agree with it, but I guess I wasn't. I'm not saying this article is correct, just that it's likely what they were thinking of when they said it was "disproved" since it made the rounds a few years ago.
