  • and hardware innovation has stalled out. Because of course it has. They don't have the space of a dedicated camera.

    You're totally not going to fit even a micro four thirds sensor in a phone, but there are a bunch of Chinese phones with larger sensors. Although they can be a PITA to find if you're on the US, reviews like them.

    I suspect the reason why we don't see them from the mainline phone manufacturers comes down more to hardware BOM cost than packaging or size.

  • Tech genius is only the most recent wave in this fad. We love our hero worship, which results in cycles of this type of thing.

    The most recent example is probably the Robber Baron era of the guided age. Some notables of the time include Andrew Carnegie, John Rockefeller, J. P. Morgan, Leland Stanford, etc. Edison and Bell didn't reach that level of wealth, but they probably would have if they were alive today.

    Don't worry, a lot of that money is still around wrapped up in family trusts. Sure, they've given a decent chunk away to white wash their names but these weren't good people.

  • Late to the party, but to add on:

    • the glamor shots of finished prints that you'll see in photos and videos are super misleading. Shine a harsh light at most prints at a steep angle and you'll see a fairly rough exterior finish in the z-axis
    • Ellis's tuning guide is a good thing to run through. It's pretty straightforward and will give you a feel for what to tweak and when to tweak it
    • I've been printing for something like 8-10 years and have never bothered with a filament dryer. I tend to buy 3 kg spools and some of them sit open for quite some time as I work through them. They live in my basement, which does have a dehumidifier in it but is usually around 55% humidity
    • keep in mind that FDM printers are basically a CNC hot glue gun and keep your expectations in line
    • 45° print orientation can be a cheat code if you have crazy overhangs
    • watch the first layer. If you get a good first layer odds are your print will be fine
    • different filaments have different physical properties and will print differently. This is true across polymers (ie PLA, PETG, ASA, ABS, TPU, etc), but can also be true across brands, colors, and blends (PLA vs PLA+, etc)
    • don't get hung up on things like acceleration or velocity. Speed is all about flow and the best way to bump that up is bigger nozzles, thicker layers, and wider extrusions

    For real advice: get a pair of calipers and print some radius gauges. Then jump into CAD, even if it means learning it. The real magic of 3D printing is in making custom designs. I'm personally a huge fan of functional prints. Once you start seeing opportunities to print replacement parts, make jigs and fixtures, and make your own designs for things you'll find tons of opportunities.

  • You're right that's exactly what it means. However, there's a ton of spin going on with BS like the lost cause that try to spin the founding of the Confederacy as something morally just and even heroic. They focus on things like states rights, chivalry, rebellion (the rebel flag), etc. Of course those obviously come at the expense of truly local rights and the rights of women. If you read any of the speeches of the time or the actual articles of succession it will become very obvious that it was about slavery.

    It doesn't help that pop culture leaned into presenting Confederate symbolism as "they're trying to morally rebel against the corrupt government" for a bit. That's a big reason why the Dukes of Hazard car, the General Lee, had a Confederate flag on the roof.

  • I totally get printing and/or sourcing parts as another barrier on entry. I was able to print my own parts with my wanhao i3 plus under a very large cardboard box. Vorons are popular enough that you can buy pre-printed and/or CNC parts now, but their print it forward program has been around for years. But all of those come with some form of cost.

  • Can confirm. I'm still rocking a 1070 Ti on a 1440 monitor and it more than meets my needs, granted I'm playing somewhat older AAA games. Looks like a 4060 is even better.

    Dig through my comment history and you'll see pros and cons of choosing to do so. If you like building and modding it's hard to beat. The build is pretty long, but you'll learn a lot.

  • It's a 19 minute / 2.4 mile trip. But your point still stands - you're not covering wear and tear.

  • You're going to have a hard time beating $2/mo unless you roll it into something else like blackblaze ($100/year for unlimited storage), Microsoft office 365 ($100/year with 1 TB of OneDrive), etc. If your space is going to photos, the speed and responsiveness of Google photos far outpaces some of the alternatives (cough cough OneDrive).

    Self hosting is a viable alternative if you're interested in having more control/local storage or if you are interested in this kind of thing and want to do it/dabble in it as a hobby.

    I personally built a NAS, which will take far too long to amortize vs just paying $2/mo. I chose this route because I value a local backup and because a NAS can a bit of a lifestyle product. "It can double as a server!". Sounds fun, but I would want to build the thing I host which will also take time so... You could potentially build a NAS that will average out to $2 or less a month if you have spare parts or score some used parts cheap. Odds are that route could also be used for self hosting.

  • How big? Potentially huge if you can get people to abandon car ownership by having a super convenient offering. Owning/leasing/maintaining a car is already expensive. We seem to be running at a situation where lower priced new cars become the thing of the past.

  • I generally agree with activite communities being a self reinforcing feedback loop. That said, one of the challenges federation creates is fragmentation for "the same" community across multiple instances. As a result, each community appears relatively inactive as they're all vying for engagement with each other.

  • Fellow senior developer. Initially I was worried about exactly what you're worried about with juniors. Now I'm also worried that management layers are simply pushing for higher velocity without giving anyone time to think about a problem. We're in this nasty loop where one person defers more decisions to a LLM to push their individual velocity up. They then get rewarded. Who care if they don't know how the code works, it works! The tests pass. More people on the team should do the same or else. Then someone takes it a step further.

    It will be very interesting to see how maintainable, or not, corporate code will be in a few years. There could well be a booming industry for people to come in and clean up the mess.

  • it's not that unusual for regular skilled jobs to achieve 6-figure yearly salaries.

    This is a... very messy and complicated area to talk about and there are plenty of stats and data setsyou can cherry pick to make things sound better than they are. Consider things like median vs average, whether or not you excluded retired folks, etc.

  • I can't speak for other printers, but my X-Max 3 has an absurdly thick aluminum plate

    The stock 350mm Voron bed is 5/16" (8mm) thick. It's quite hefty lol

  • What OP meant was volumetric flow, not the extrusion multiplier. Volumetric flow caps the volume of plastic the slicer will ask your extruder to deliver per second. Fiddling with this value can help prevent under extrusion.

    What you did by reducing speed is similar, but you could run into issues if you were to modify extrusion width or layer height.

  • Speaking in generic terms, film is way more forgiving of over exposure and digital is way more forgiving of under exposure. A fast lens is always king, but once you hit parity on that I would personally take digital for low light any day.
