  • Ball-Pit - Litterbox Comics

  • As a kid I went to a large indoor ball pit once where they had something like that, but they had the outputs hooked up to marble runs and ball cannons. It would also filter out any broken balls. I don't know how long it took to cycle through all the balls, because this place was absolutely massive. Probably millions of balls.

  • It's not just the graphics that improved in the last 20 years. Modern game engines created a floor of quality where input just works, basic configuration just works, autosave just works. All these little conveniences around the game itself that you barely think about, until you play a shooter from 20 years ago and the buttons are mapped weirdly and there's no way to remap.

  • There is one widely published instance of a woman almost losing custody of her two children after a court-ordered genetic test returned a mismatch. Had to be pretty confusing to hear that the guy is indeed the father, but... Objection! You are not the mother of these children!

  • Dota introduced behavior scores and tries to match chill people with chill people now. It's really easy to ragebait someone when you're stressed out though. I get quiet or helpful teams more than raging teams these days, luckily, but it's super difficult to tell a flamer, in a nice way, that pointing fingers won't fix our teamplay and we need a better strategy right now.

    I think the best strategy is to liberally mute anyone who even seems slightly stressed out, before they snap for real.

  • MLP is actually making a bit of a comeback right now. I saw so many pony cosplays at comicon, but they're all the age to have watched FiM when they were the proper target audience. So it made enough of an impact on these people that they go full cerulean body paint in a heatwave 10-15 years later.

    It's a really good cartoon though. It had strong, consistent characters, developing over 9 seasons. Stories were well-written, setting up a problem with a character flaw and resolving with a lesson learned. The ensemble cast meant that every permutation of pony resulted in new dynamics.

    And it inspired so many artists, many of them still active. A lot of them dropped the "brony" from their name by now, but there's so many musicians who started in MLP and branched out.

  • I was actually trying to fix low input volume, but noticed the cutting out on the discord loopback. People were complaining that I'm hard to hear, but fixing the volume won't help if the audio is dropping entirely (-.-')

    I don't think I can fix Discord, I'll just focus on the volume right now and see if I can use a different Discord client.

  • Specifically with the Cinnamon Panel (taskbar) on Linux Mint during fullscreen gaming. I like to tab out during long matchmaking and under Windows the taskbar would be visible and usable when another window gets focused over the fullscreen game. With Cinnamon, the space for the panel is there, but not the panel itself. When you press Super, the menu pops up and shows the panel with it, but the panel isn't usable...

    There is an active issue on the cinnamon github from 2012. No one even knows if this should be a bug or a feature request, so it's just all undefined behavior right now.

    Edit: it's even worse, a newer issue was closed last year after a discussion that can only be described as very linux.

  • I think you're missing the point. Having a child for Narnia is not selfish, it is literally for the good of Narnia to have another strong Narnian. But you're operating under a moral framework where even the good of Narnia is ultimately good for the Narnian, therefore it is selfish to want Narnia to be strong.

    Do you have to agree with the idea of a strong Narnia? Of course not. But it's a very narrow way of thinking to explain every human motivation through selfishness.

  • There are plenty of reasons that aren't selfish. You can do it for humanity, for justice, for style points, for Narnia... If you want to logick those into being selfish, that's your own moral framework talking. Every action is a subjective choice from a subjective perspective in the end, but people can still have non-selfish intentions, however misguided you may judge them.

  • I would only ever buy new HDDs tbh. But also, I bought a stack of 8TB HDDs in 2023 for €180 a piece and those same models are now €300... Thanks, Obama.

    Anyway, I have 4 of those, 1 is parity, so 24TB of actual space. I started with a 2TB collection from my laptop harddrive and I'm now at 7TB used. I used to be more cautious with my space and I still have my *arrs set to stingy profiles now, to make downloads faster, but I also download and keep a lot more.

    I do sometimes go through and delete stuff that I won't watch (either watched and didn't like or never watched). But that's more so I won't get tempted to watch it than for the space currently.

  • Water is also best used to smother a fire. Taking energy away is much less efficient than taking oxygen away.

    Anyway, if you're frying a lot and grease fires are a worry (bigger than you can smother with a lid), get a class K extinguisher for the kitchen. It turns your oil into soap, and soap doesn't burn.

  • If it did it would be simple to train a healthy and truthful facts AI, you would simply train it off from the truthful and healthy facts.

    Not how AI works. I mean, it's technically possible to train an AI that only generates truth, but it would be so overfitted that it's functionally no different from the search bar on Wikipedia.

    Large language models need randomness to function. They cut up every true sentence in the training data into tiny tokens and reassemble them into... well, whatever arrangement of tokens satisfies the discriminator or the humans who grade the output. Discriminators can't tell fact from fiction and the humans generally don't care to.

    Even if you valued truth above all else during the training and rejected every false statement you encounter, there's no way you could judge the truth of every possible statement the system could ever produce. And with randomness most statements will be false, that's simply the nature of truth.
