  • My go-to salmon recipe comes from a "farm-to-table" Japanese cookbook: about 1.5"-2" wide salmon fillets resting on a sheet of foil big enough to wrap them; dollop of butter, salt, sprinkled with sake, and garnished with a green onion sprig (I've also used a garlic medallion as substitute and might be better). Wrap them up and broil them on high in the oven for like ten minutes. So good, so simple.

  • In reference to the "N word," a slur directed at Black people (rhymes with "bigger"). Rappers tend to use a version that ends on a kind of soft vowel sound ("-ah" or -"uh") whereas racists are known to use the "hard r" ending. Republicans tend to be racist and also are depicted on TV as having an R next to their name to denote party affiliation. So this user is playing on the double meaning here, "hard R" being in reference to Republican racism.

  • My mom never used iTunes on her phone, meaning she never once put any music on her phone, and so she was completely confused/angry when she'd get in her car and suddenly it would pair and start playing this U2 album. She didn't know how to stop it, so it would play over and over (she'd just drop the volume). It also didn't help that the cover art is among the gayest things to ever appear on her phone screen. I'd come home to visit and get in her car and she'd just start hollering "this stupid thing, where did this come from?!?"

  • a show based in the gamma quadrant after the Dominion War would be kinda cool (if done right). That's a show that could appeal to long-term fans while also potentially drawing in new ones because it would like TOS (and what VOY was originally supposed to be) in that there's new worlds and cultures to be seen.

  • Hawai'i addressed this problem a long time ago. All of our beaches are considered public and, by law, there has to be free public access (including parking) to every stretch of seashore (that itsn't on a military base). It's wonderful, compared to where I once lived in Florida where they'd charge you like $20 just to access the "public" beach.

  • Okay, so. The Delta Quadrant is simply a quartered section of the Milky Way galaxy, yeah? Voyager finds itself there and has to travel for 75 years to get home, yeah? Assuming the ST maps out there are accurate, all of the quadrants are basically the same size. So this suggests that travel in either the Beta or Alpha Quadrants could involve super lengthy timelines like this.

    I guess what I'm trying to get at is why VOY makes such a big deal out of the 75 years to get to the Alpha Quadrant when getting there might also involve another several decades of travel after crossing the "border." Sure, there are allies and all that. But it's still deep space. Like, the closest point between the quadrants is going to be near the galactic center/core (or are they accounting for the spin of the Milky Way and are thus traveling against that, so as to bring "home" closer while they themselves travel toward it?). So if it takes 75 years from their location in "Caretaker" to get to the core, then they're looking at a similar amount of travel to Earth or whatever, right? Or did I miss something where they said that it would take 75 years to get to Earth?

  • I know it's all based on what's familiar, but I imagine I'd have a hard time converting to Celsius for a weather report. I've lived in tropical climates in the US for over half my life so when people say things like "it's a hot 30 degrees out there!" it just short-circuits my brain.
