  • Every generation has their "bi-level" haircut. From the bowl-cut to the faux hawk to the long bangs/short sides emo "swoop"--all the way to this, the 20s broccoli. There's also sometimes the mullet they try to pass off as a "wolf cut." Sure, kid.

    We're not perfect, but we're trying; we have openly Queer (including trans clergy) and have re-written our canon on marriage to include same-sex marriage. I'm a priest in this church. Never imagined that the Trans flag that is hanging on my wall in my office (given to me by a fellow demonstrator at a No Kings protest last year) would possibly land me in jail some day.

    But seriously, at this point it is the duty of any Christian, if they truly believe in Jesus, to stand with Trans folks and proclaim anti-fascism. Because this is where Jesus would be standing.

    I haven’t had one of these in a long time. I was a kind of crap high school student and even got my GED so I could attend classes at a community college and transfer to a four-year university. I now have a master’s and I don’t think I’ve had one of these nightmares since graduating and entering into my profession. But while in college and grad school I had these frequently!

    The whole idea is preposterous of course. They would never Billy Madison us for a clerical error on their part.

  • What a roller coaster I experienced with "Series Acclimation Mil." More or less started with an eyeroll and ended with me giddy and pointing at the screen like that Leo meme. It actually made me come around on SAM as a character. I recently watched the final arc of DS9 with this episode's revelations in mind, and it really enriches things while also making them more complicated. It actually becomes a sort of fitting coda to DS9 (which itself is a show about enriching and also complicating things). Tawny Newsome is a treasure.

    I loved ACA and I'm sad that it's been cancelled.

    EDIT to correct Tawny Newsome's name. Must've had The Last Man on Earth on my mind when I wrote it as "Tandy." That or the Tony Todd/Candyman thing just got in there and portmandeau portmandeux Natalie Portman Mountain Dew it got all combined, yeah?

  • I was still an active member of a Baptist Church in the early 2000s and I remember arguing with the leader of my Sunday School group about the dangers of the Patriot Act and how it opens the door to stuff like this. He just waved it away as me being anti-authoritarian and paranoid. Well look who was proved to be right in the end, MATT?!?

  • Recently had a WWII vet visit my parish. Dude was over 100 years old and was in town for a Pearl Harbor commemoration. He told me that he was among the first group of Allied soldiers to fly over Europe after the surrender and he described seeing people trying to make a life among the rubble of their towns and cities. He then compared this to what he was seeing in Gaza and started to lament the US' support of Israel and how he saw clear connections to what is going on there and what he witnessed in Europe. You're absolutely right, there are now too few living who remember...

  • I grew up as a fundie, stopped being one while at an evangelical university but was still surrounded by them and do I have stories. By the time I was having sex, I'd largely given up any pretense of being a fundie, so I don't have too many first-hand stories that are worth sharing (had my heart broken by a girl that I was deeply in love with, and she me, but she had "promised God that she wouldn't date during her freshman year of college" and so abruptly ended things; I did not handle it well). But two stories of acquaintances I'll share:

    One guy was dumped by his (stunningly beautiful) girlfriend of several years for the simple fact that he admitted that he looked at porn once. Not habitually and not while he was with her. Just, at some point, he once saw porn (this was in the early internet days, so this was actually believable). And she said she was out.

    The other story is a guy was making out with his girlfriend (also stunningly beautiful--apparently there's a trend lol) who just stopped and said "I think we've been doing this too much and need to pray about it." He goes, "okay" assuming that this was one of those, let's take time to think/pray and then reconvene at a later date things. Nope. Right there in his car she starts "Lord Jesus, we pray to you this evening..." and he was like I guess this is what we're doing now.

  • My go-to salmon recipe comes from a "farm-to-table" Japanese cookbook: about 1.5"-2" wide salmon fillets resting on a sheet of foil big enough to wrap them; dollop of butter, salt, sprinkled with sake, and garnished with a green onion sprig (I've also used a garlic medallion as substitute and might be better). Wrap them up and broil them on high in the oven for like ten minutes. So good, so simple.

    (Jesus offends the religious authorities more than a few times because of His associations, notably "prostitutes"--with a later tradition holding that the woman to whom Jesus' return from death was first revealed, Mary Magdalene, was herself a sex-worker; as for Queer followers in the Bible, Jesus makes reference to "eunuchs" and Jesus Himself seems to fit on the asexual scale)

  • In reference to the "N word," a slur directed at Black people (rhymes with "bigger"). Rappers tend to use a version that ends on a kind of soft vowel sound ("-ah" or -"uh") whereas racists are known to use the "hard r" ending. Republicans tend to be racist and also are depicted on TV as having an R next to their name to denote party affiliation. So this user is playing on the double meaning here, "hard R" being in reference to Republican racism.
