  • Also Democrats tend to have a higher proportion of post-high school degrees. While that's not a guarantee of being smart (I went to college with some DUMB people who managed to graduate--all happened to be business degree students with a right-leaning bias, fwiw) it does suggest a higher concentration of people who've engaged with critical thinking.

  • I've done this for my kids a few times (I have four kids; it's... expensive) and Machete order is great because it totally preserves both the Empire surprise and fosters a bit of a surprise with the "Sith Lord" reveal in RotS while also making the Leia reveal something that doesn't feel tacked on (throughout the entirety of RotS they speak with the assumption that Padme only has one baby in there--how a society with self-aware droids and interstellar travel can't figure out that there's two babies in one uterus is a conversation for another time). Plus it makes Luke a more complex character in Jedi when you return to him and he's in black and choking out guards like you just watched his dad do.

  • I used to avoid refried beans. Until I did a little work at an orphanage in Honduras and refried beans were served as breakfast (with tortillas and sliced avocado and eggs). Completely changed me. These were thicker than what I'm used to seeing, but I'm down for all kinds of refried beans now.

  • From Hawai'i here. I recently learned a new trick from a Filipino woman in regards to Spam: fry it until it screams. You put a thicker layer of oil in the pan and fry it until either the bottom side takes on a kind of yellow hue or you can hear a little whistle come out of it. This causes the fat to render and brings out the meat flavor in the Spam. Plus it gets crispier. Makes GREAT Spam musubi.

    Spam, egg, and rice is a favorite of my kids (and me). Can get it at McDonald's here. Also good on pizza.

    I first had it at a diner in Philly. I tend to try things I might not get a chance to try elsewhere and so I asked what scrapple was. I was told it was better not to know and just eat it. Delicious.

  • Acts of the Apostles (written by Saint Luke). Saint Peter is recorded as having a vision of Jesus telling him to eat non-kosher foods. This is all a means to let Saint Peter know that Gentiles are not be treated as "unclean."

    I can't think of a single instance where Saint Paul mentions pork.

  • What gets me is that the Pope is just saying pretty basic Christian teachings. Simply the kinds of stuff Jesus says in the Sermon on the Mount. And the media is like "LOOK HE'S ATTACKING TRUMP!" The fact that he doesn't really specify the USA or anything says a lot about the state of things, where the basic Gospel of Jesus Christ is seen as inherently confrontational to the MAGA agenda.

    I mean, it's my favorite book of the Bible. But it's the most easily misunderstood and misinterpreted. The whole thing is an allegory written in a particular kind of prose, drawing on tropes common to a genre of writing scholars call "apocalypse." But given that even lifelong Christians are unaware of this fact means that this is definitely not the book to recommend reading as an entry point. Unless you're looking for inspiration for something to airbrush on the side of your bitchin' van (hopefully one with a crescent moon bubble window on the back). Then by all means flip to the section right before the maps and get to sketching!

  • Well, I'd argue that most of MAGA is evangelical, who tend to view Catholicism as either "fake Christianity" or a kind of quaint remnant of an older time that Protestantism fixed (and evangelicalism perfected). So most of them are already on board with the idea that the Pope is bad.
