I like city building games and puzzles. I like other things as well, but that's not important right now.

  • What's the best thing made from potatoes?

  • Here are some tier list formats I found after a quick format

    • Tierlist A is potato-centric side dishes, so no stew or soup
    • Tierlist B is slightly more international
    • Tierlist C Manages to keep the list a bit trim by focusing just on the process of how we get there (mash 'em, fry 'em, curry 'em, distill 'em)

  • What's the best thing made from potatoes?

  • Could rank or tier list them. I haven't found anything not great made from potatoes (apart from perhaps... famine!) but some are undeniably worthier than the others:

    • Roast potatoes > Fries. Controversial, yes, but they're kind of similar in texture and I'd eat roast patatas over wedgie patatas for any meal
    • Fries > Potato salad. Any meal is lifted by use of fries and they never become boring to eat, unless you eat them just by themselves haha (I've done this once for dinner). Potato salad's value is very dependant on how you make it.
    • Curries with potatoes in are good, but the potato isn't the key part of it, it's an add-in. This goes to the end of the list for now.
    • Innumerous other foods have potatoes in, and much like curries with potato, these foods generally use it as a thickener or as the "added carbs." When potatoes become replacable, they're not doing anything special
    • Potato Soups (where potato isn't really replacable) > Stews/goulash with potato > Curries with potato
    • Now i had that line about "when potatoes become replacable" but this does not change the ranking of fries and roasties, which are so good precisely because they use potatoes

    Hence a rough rank list:

    1. Roast Potatoes
    2. Fries [AKA Chips in UK]
    3. Leak and Potato Soup. Yes, specfically leak and potato, that exact type of soup. Can maybe also be used as an anchor point for other types of potato soup, but i've never needed to eat those because i have L&P soup in my life.
    4. Hash Browns. Kind of a lot of work for what you get, and a food easily spoiled by tasting the ambrosia of a superior hashbrown, which leaves you longing for that perfect hashbrown you once had, but alas you have a merely adequate hashbrown before you.
    5. Crisps [AKA "Potato Chips" in USA]. Shaky position for this one
    6. Stews (e.g beef bourginon) just because I long for it more than I long for potato salad. I guess it's a warm versus cold thing
    7. Potato Salad
    8. Potato curries
    9. Mashed potatoes (which I still like, nontheless!)

    Can we just pretend potato waffles falls under fries so i don't have to re-evaulate my ranking?

  • What's a TV series that you really, really liked and would enthusiastically recommend?

  • To do it in your style:

    • Community (Absurdist Comedy/Sitcom) is recommended by a lot of people and one of the most unique shows ever, I feel. While the premise sounds commonplace, it makes innumerable little twists on expected tropes to achieve this. You will be straight up hooked after 2 episodes.
    • Daredevil (Superhero Action Drama) this is a "cold take." I think even people whi hate superheroes get a lot of good things out of this, because it's chock full of non-superhero stuff and all of that is done perfectly, deliciously.
    • Frasier (Normal Sitcom, spin-off to Cheers) I wouldn't recommend watching all of cheers, but i would recommend watching all of Frasier. Very funny. When the cast look like just normal average people instead of being attractive fun 20-something year olds, you know it's gonna have super well crafted humour.
    • Poldark (Period Drama - Political & Historical) This is the gateway drug for period dramas. THE. GATEWAY DRUG. I would actually recommend it before watching the more mainstream stuff like Pride and Predjudice (which I love) or Wuthering Heights (which I don't love). Skip season 5 though.
    • Deutschland 83 (Spy Drama) This is full of history I didn't know much about. You gain an insight into the East-German-perspective during the Cold War. is also very grounded and realistic which makes the stakes higher/feel more real to the viewer. Used to be free on Channel4 iPlayer, idk where it is anymore.
    • MadMen (Period Piece/Industry Drama) Again, a popular suggestion. I probably don't need to explain. Personally haven't seen anything like this show and I had to watch it 1-3 episodes a day for half a year.

  • UK gameshows are just far superior to american ones - English speaker lemmy users must take advantage of this knowledge. I'd also like to recommend Would I Lie to You?

  • I have exceptionally good memory for this kind of thing so yes. I can probably remember the layout of every building i've ever fully explored or 80% explored.

    I remember some of the schools I’ve been to… like the general vibe of it, idk if I could actually draw a map… more of a notebook doodle maybe

    I think you'll surprise yourself. You piece things together at the time, E.G "I can't go there because it's staff only; therefore that entire area must contain the teachers' lounge, where they make the food, and the headteachers' office." By process of elimination you could probably figure out what each room was used for in your old school even without having gone to all the rooms.

  • What I find weird is that it wasn’t always seen that way. Men were literally allowed to rape their wives until relatively recently. I’m sure most men didn’t, but it was framed as a sort of duty

    Yeah, the only way I can get my head around it is assuming that it was very rare for someone to do marital rape.

    Is that as bad as murder?

    This a good and challenging question. I suppose, as with murder, some instances of rape are worse than others (e.g attacking a random person violently VS. your spouse couldn't consent because you're both heavily intoxicated).

    But no, what you describe there isn't worse than murder... so really I need to be more specific and state that rape can be worse than murder, or "[X] sexual assault scenario is worse than the act of murdering someone is".

    At which point it becomes a less useful statement, and probably everyone agrees with it so it's not controversial at all.

  • Appreciate the reassurance, I just figure it may lead to wanting more money for the sake of it.

    Especially when you see others around you getting richer and think "I deserve to be richer than them/my family should be richer than them because we're smarter/worked harder/are better people"
