I like city building games and puzzles. I like other things as well, but that's not important right now.

  • Ancient greeks had it better. For them, the hours changed in length with each season;

    • Summer has long day hours and short night hours
    • winter has long night hours and short day hours

    And so all days can keep the same number of hours without us doing things at unnatural times

  • Completely agree. People like Luigi are essential, drawing a line in the sand for evil to see. That's not to say we need vigilantes constantly... but it feels like times right now are when we need a few.

    EDIT: It also troubles me how the USA does the death penalty. There's a big argument of 'what if we kill someone who was mistakenly convicted' - I think if you stuck to only executing people who CERTAINLY committed the crime, you'd make huge strides in ridding the world of evil destructive rampage killers, anyway.

    There are a ridiculous amount of killers in america who confess, boast, are proud of having killed. Who were caught on cctv, or otherwise witnessed killing.

  • My logic is that it has less competition of homeless people, and in my country they have more jobs there because not enough non-retired people live there or can travel there for work.

    I live in a city next to a big national park and there's a bunch of villages out there with many hotels and cafes and shops for hikers and climbers visiting the area, but - the train fare to these places costs 1 hour of wages. Buses and trains only go through occasionally so timing it is a bit of a pain too.

    If one needs a job but doesn't have to worry about getting back home to the city, why not go somewhere where they need more hands?

    I've heard this a lot and it's one of the things thst most scares me in life. Because I want money, for financial security. I want to be able to have a four person family and guarantee their security and well-being 'til the kids have each reached 25+ y.o, and i want to actually own property a house that I can pass on to them, or one of them.

    But the absolute certainty with which people say you loose sight of all those things when you get your hands on money...

    I've already in my life run into so many hurdles and situations where i went 'I'd NEVER make that mistake," or "I'll never so something as evil, stupid or reckless as that," and then ended up doing x thing anyway. It's like having a God who constsntly reads your thoughts and tries to prove you wrong.

    I've also witnessed 2 or 3 ex-friends go absolutely insane in the pursuit of wealth and status and they're only in early 20s.

    I think this one is actually not a controversial opinion. Some argue that we, common people, think we're money hungry but we actually just never have as much as we need, and what we perceive as our own oursuit of greed is axtuslly pursiit of survival. But at that point we're maybe describing something different to what you outline in your comment.

  • You're probably exactly right for the places you're thinking of, but neither of those things have to be hell. Apartments originally were spacious places like the home-sized ones, the justification for their existence being that you get to live in the city centre rather than that being the only selling point.

    If you want to see good examples of big cities with nice levels of public space, look at urban design in south korea and china

    • Rape is worse than murder; murder can be justified in some cases, e.g self defense, but rape never can. Therefore on average, rape is more evil than murder (it's a question of 100% versus like 98.5% on the evil scale)

    I think the first one is more contentious - yes it's mainstream but it genuinely gets people riled up. The second one sounds shocking but is mainly just hard to articulate.

  • If i was homeless i'd probably want driving to some smaller towns or hooking up with jobs, but the latter is a lot to ask for and nobody seems to do the small town strategy i have in my head, so i guess I truly don't know what it's like.

    Then again, the decent homeless shelters and charities are in big cities. My city has LOADS but also has/recently had an industry of drug dealers exploiting these charities.

    If you want to genuinely help homeless people, go into it being aware that there are dangerous and horrible people who it is not safe to help, who just love exploiting people.

    If you want to help the homeless, do it through a charity, i.e making face-2-face contact with ones going through the right channels to get help - perhaps you will encounter people who need directing to these charities or don't know they exist.

  • Israel dictates american international policy and America seems to in turn dictate european international policy. Even when the opportunity arises to deviate from this, most politicians/entire governments decide they prefer to have someone else do their deciaion making for them.

  • Value is decided arbitrarily in our current economic system - beauty in the eye of the beholder. Ideas, even really basic ones, are worth a lot when pitched to people who have the money and will to implement them - think of shark tank/dragons den.

    Last time I went for a blood donation an old nurse there handling recovery was telling everyone that there's millions of pounds to be made in creating packaging for use in hospitals - I think she was saying they need more easy tear stuff? Or maybe resealable, because that would be better for the environment. Already I'm losing my handle on that ticket out of poverty...

    Anyway the point of that story is that it sounds like a simple idea, because anyone might realise they need better packaging for stuff; but it's the realisation of those ideas that escapes us.

  • I'm really fond of the Netherlands because it neatly distributes towns, water and farmland. Admittedly I don't think it has the most effective system of wilderness, but I appreciate it for the many things it achieves.

    I'm fond of all the cold places in the world - Alaska, Canada, Finland and Russia, for instance. That said I now love warm weather much more than cold weather, but I like the appearance of snowy places.
