  • I got a photo of his drivers license shortly before that, (needed his ID to close and cash out an RESP that had been setup for me in 2007).

    In his DL photo, he looks like he's had a really rough time since we left. Like he's aged 30 years in half that time. The metadata of the photo shows it was taken at his moms house.

    Serves him right.

    Part of me sent the videos to see if he cared, part of me just wanted to make him remember he had a happy family and a fairly good life; until he ruined it.

    Life hasn't been easy for any of us, but this side of the family at least still has eachother. It's the only thing that's kept us going TBH.

  • My mother returned to Canada to visit her mother who was slowly dying of ALS. (Where I was born. We had moved to my fathers home country when I was 10, to see his side of the family and experience more of the world)

    During her whole absence, my father cheated on her with various women, even taking me on a couple of his dates. When she got back and found out, she decided to leave permanently.

    I (12m) was given the option of staying with either. I chose to go with her.

    In the last week before I was to leave; he said he wanted to spend time with me and took me out to a couple 'fun tourist attractions'. A jet boat ride, a zipline, some random park. Each of these, he brought one of his girlfriends that he'd been cheating with (not the same one each time). We also went to at least one of their houses, as well as his weed dealers hidden under-house grow-op/party room thing. More focused on his dates than actually spending any time with me. Avoiding time with me had been a common theme throughout our lives/relationship.

    I later learned he'd abused my older step-sister when she was much younger...

    I've deliberately not spoken to him since. ~15 years later I sent him a couple old family videos I'd digitised (with my sister censored out of them), of when I was born and a few of the years immediately after. Mostly as a reminder of what he threw in the trash.

    From what I've heard, he ended up homeless and jobless for quite a while and now lives with his mother.

  • I miss having my Motorola Z2 Play, with the Moto-Mods platform, as a daily phone.

    External mods that magnetically attach to the back of the phone. Primarily an extra 3500mah battery, but there were others: 360 camera, a printer, 3" stereo speakers, and even a projector.

    I actually still have this phone, but it has become extremely slow, doesn't get security updates, and is incompatible with lots of apps. It now lives on the handle bars of my ebike, with it's extra battery mod; mostly as a gps. Occasionally I'll use it with the projector on the wall of my bedroom; watching movies or youtube.

  • I've been running two piholes for a few years:

    I let the router handle dhcp, while having it hand out each of the piholes IPs as DNS #1 and DNS #2. Those piholes settings are mirrored using Nebula-Sync, so any change made to one pihole gets copied over to the other automatically.

    Both of those piholes are setup to wrap outbound DNS reqests in DOH as well, with the router blocking port 53 outbound. So all DNS traffic leaving the network has to be DOH/DOT or it just gets dropped. Currently using NextDNS and quad9 as my upstream DOH providers.

    Note: the cloudflared method for DOH is outdated. I'm still using it via the docker image "image: cloudflare/cloudflared:2025.11.1"

    I believe This (dns-crypt) is the more recent method.

  • For a while, the windows machine I was using kept randomly becoming unresponsive (both via network, as well as the keyboard+mouse) and I just could not figure out why. Everytime it did, I'd have to force a shutdown by holding the power button until it shutoff, then press it again to start back up. Sometimes this happened while I wasn't home, so it had to just stay offline until I was.

    I got sick of having to do this; so I replaced the power button with a transistor and a RPI. The PI would ping the server every 5min; if it failed to get a response 3 times in a row, it would trigger the transistor for 10sec, release for 3sec, then press and release again; forcing a poweroff then starting the machine again. It'd also write these events to a log file. I think it was around twice a week ish.

    Never did figure out what the cause of the lockup was; but it stopped when I replaced windows with Debian.

  • Summary judgement requires you to show you've successfully served the defendant and they've then refused/failed to appear in court.

    If you can't actually serve the defendant (usually required in-person), but can show you have made sufficient effort to do so; the judge can first grant alternative means of service, such as posting notice in public, or service via email.

    Once that's been done, and still the defendant fails to appear in court; then the plaintiff can submit a motion for summary judgement.

    Even a police officer cannot just follow someone around all day every day, without reasonable articulable suspicion. They would also be guilty of harassment and/or criminal stalking.

    Again, it's not that a camera is recording that's the problem. It's the infrastructure behind those cameras that aggregate all the data into a single database which requires no cause to search. Anyone with a badge/title can track anyone throughout the whole country, with no probable cause, no warrant, and no oversight. They don't even have to say why they're searching the system.

    An ex partner fleeing an abusive boyfriend/girlfriend that happens to be a police officer (or that has a police officer buddy) can and will be hunted down by that ex, and nobody will know until it's too late. This system directly puts people in danger.

    at least 50 documented cases across the United States in which law enforcement officers have been charged with or accused of misusing AI-powered automated license plate reader systems to conduct unauthorized surveillance of intimate partners, ex-partners, or women they wanted to meet. In 26 of those cases, prosecutors and investigators concluded that officers used the technology specifically to spy on wives, girlfriends, former partners, their exes' new partners, or women they sought to approach.

    These systems also get used by government agencies (on both sides of the spectrum) to track anyone that disagrees with their political stance, fishing for ways to harass, jail, or run them out of town/state. Governments given this type of power stop being democracies and become dictatorships; because anyone that could or would challenge them get hunted down.

    I see nothing wrong with what you're doing in public being available to law enforcement.

    It wouldn't be a problem if every person with access to this system was 100% honest and just; but thats simply not the reality of the world. There are ALWAYS people that will abuse these types of tools for evil purposes. That's why we have a court system instead of just making every police officer 'judge, jury, and executioner'.

    Flock removes the court system and puts all the power in every single officers hands. That is NOT a good thing.

    'Every police officer has good intentions' is a fantasy. If you can't see that, you've spent way too much time inside.

  • Flock effectively follows you around like a stalker.

    If I was to follow you around all day, recording everything you do (even if I just stay in public spaces), I would be guilty of harassment and potentially criminal stalking. Flock does the same thing, just via a network of cameras instead of literally following you in person.

    There are tons of public cameras, but they're owned by seprate individuals/companies. You'd be required to get permission from each ones owner to collect their footage, which in itself provides saftey against stalkers. The owners of that footage are in no way obligated to provide it and will likely refuse without being given a good reason. They may even still refuse until provided with a court order. That oversight, from both the footage owners and the courts that order it to be handed over, protects people from unlawful harassment, particularly stalkers.

    The fact that Flock provides anyone with a badge/title the ability to freely search a massive database for every public location a person has been, what they were wearing, how they walk, what bluetooth devices they had, their mode of transport (plus every detail about it Flock can extract), facial recognition data, and more - is terrifying. 0 oversight: no warrant, no reasonable suspicion, no evidence of a crime; just following you around hoping to catch you doing something they don't like (regardless of whether it's illegal activity or not).

    A single search query recruits that entire network as a passive tracking apparatus. An officer who sets a specific plate on a "hot list" receives an automatic alert whenever that vehicle appears anywhere in the system — across city limits, across state lines, across jurisdictions the officer has no authority in. The abuser does not need to be present. The cameras do the watching for him.
