So, this is the place where I'm going to be generally hanging out and trolling around, while my Pixelfed, Mastodon, and Blacksky accounts are going to be primarily art posting accounts, and I also have a Nooki account.

I'm also going to start to be active more on here than on lemmy.org, so I'm making this my primary Lemmy account now.

I'll link the other socials I'm varying levels of active on below, plus my lemmy.org account which I'm demoting to my secondary account if that instance is going to be more unstable from now on.

  • Cloudflare is about as bad, and the alarming thing is, Lemmy instances in particular tend to use that a lot when Altcha, Anubis, and go-away exist for if you must have a captcha of some kind.

    If a hostile government doesn't like a given site, they could just have Cloudflare block it, where the self-hosted captchas I just mentioned don't necessarily have that problem.

    Like, a Fediverse instance using Cloudflare, which is going against their best interest when the Fediverse is supposed to be an open and decentralized platform that's somewhat censorship-resistant, is really stupid when you got three open and self-hosted captcha alternatives you can use instead if you absolutely need a captcha. Using Cloudflare for this is opening the door for censorship of your instance if a hostile government suddenly decides your instance needs to be blocked.

    As for Google reCAPTCHA, there's an even worse hypothetical I thought of than what is already on the table: Couldn't Google build a stripped-down version of Play Integrity into Chrome specifically for passing their captchas, and effectively lock most of the web into Chrome on desktops regardless of OS because vanilla Chromium and other Chromium forks and the FF browsers, and other alternative browsers such as Servo, Ladybird, or Safari, wouldn't have that stripped-down Play Integrity that Chrome would hypothetically have and thus wouldn't be able to pass Google's captchas if they actually pulled that?

  • The intent there is people on desktops are supposed to scan a verification QR code with a Google or Apple device, and basically tie their desktop to their Google or Apple device with this new reCAPTCHA.

    Thankfully alternatives like Altcha, Anubis, and go-away, which are open-source and self-hosted, and platform-agnostic exist, but it'll be an uphill battle to get anything other than Fediverse or Invidious instances using those.

    That's like if I broke a stick in half in front of a bunch of people, and then tried to say I didn't break that stick, when everyone saw me break that stick. Stupid analogy, I know, but that's basically what Asha is trying to pull here.

  • Even Windows is KYC'd by default as consumer Windows generally requires an MS account now and setting up an MS account requires your DOB and may some day even require a face scan or your ID, and in addition there's been active attempts to restrict Linux and BSD although the two laws of which I speak in Cali and Colorado ultimately exempted FOSS from their scope, and as for the Fediverse, the FBI raided a Mastodon server a while back so even that isn't entirely safe, and Windows 365 is facilitating thin clients connected to rented servers, plus the ability to build a PC is actively being pushed out of reach of everyone who isn't rich.

  • We are moving towards an era of a more locked down web in the UK. The main flag here is “robust age verification” - i.e. we’re moving from “you must provide ID to view adult material on social media” to “you must provide ID to use social media”.

    And then from there to you must provide ID to use your device and eventually you can only run (state-approved OS) on your device, assuming thin clients tied to rented servers, which would be then tied to your ID, don't take over and kill off personal computing first.

  • Which is the idea, especially assuming it also targets the decentralized networks like the Fediverse. Like, will self-hosting Fediverse instances, and self-hosting anything at all even if it's completely offline suddenly be criminalized there?

    And what about open-source OSes like Linux and BSD? Will those also be targeted or will websites start blocking those OSes in UK borders now?
