So, this is the place where I'm going to be generally hanging out and trolling around, while my Pixelfed, Mastodon, and Blacksky accounts are going to be primarily art posting accounts, and I also have a Nooki account.

I'm also going to start to be active more on here than on lemmy.org, so I'm making this my primary Lemmy account now.

I'll link the other socials I'm varying levels of active on below, plus my lemmy.org account which I'm demoting to my secondary account if that instance is going to be more unstable from now on.

  • And this is on purpose. The next step is a state intranet accessed by thin clients tied to your ID or face, where you can only say what the state approves for you to say or see what the state approves for you to see.

And finally you won't be allowed to own your own devices anymore.

Welcome to NK, because that's what the US is turning into. On that note, kiss your rights goodbye, Americans, because they no longer exist.

  • If you're signing up for ATproto, I'd avoid Bsky and go for Blacksky instead. Although on Blacksky, the two public PDSes you can pick are cryptoanarchy.network and myatproto.social.

Also, Bsky has been trying to push ID lately while Blacksky isn't yet, but there's the chance that Bsky corporate could start to get hostile against Blacksky and other third parties and start to block them at some point.

  • Another attack on device ownership if this leads to all-out firmware locks

  • A PC would be the better option longterm in terms of owning the hardware especially as PS is going all-digital and given Sony's track record of pulling people's supposedly-purchased content at will.

  • I don't know how mainstream they really are, but the BSDs, maybe? NetBSD in particular publicly bans AI code from their codebase in their Commit Guidelines as tainted code, and I imagine the rest of the BSDs other than maybe MidnightBSD have a similarly hostile stance against AI code to NetBSD. I especially could easily imagine OpenBSD being hostile against AI code given their longstanding security reputation.

Linux seems to be getting pretty friendly to AI code with Linus himself even shaming people who are anti-AI, so I don't know how much longer it's gonna hold up for as even if individual distros may be anti-AI, they still have to deal with upstream decisions from the kernel devs.

  • Move to the Lemmy or Piefed ASAP. At least then you not only have more freedom generally, eg. if you don't like one instance or vice-versa, you could move to another, but you can also host your own if you have the hardware and the admin chops for it.

For now you could still read Reddit with one of the few Redlib instances that are still active left, but even then it's a matter of time before that's blocked.

I killed my Reddit account the moment they announced they were going to be pushing more censorship last year and I haven't looked back. Figured that I might as well leave that sinking ship before I'm inevitably banned for something stupid on there, because had I stayed on Reddit, I would've been banned for some stupid made-up offense eventually. Basically, my reasoning boiled down to...

I'm leaving this place one way or another, I might as well leave on my own now before I'm forced out later.

  • Wanna bet Meta bought the lawmakers off?

  • Big Tech is pushing mass censorship through in a 'protect the kids' trench coat. This is SOPA being snuck through in a kid safety trench coat.

  • Boy, this didn't age well, given the KIDS Act passed the House and it'll probably pass the Senate, and then it's over for online freedom in the US.

  • This is fabricated by shell companies.

  • At some point a splinternet's gonna happen, and it's gonna happen soon. Big Tech is gonna cause the digital apocalypse.

  • They've been rolling it out for a while now. I've long since moved to Blacksky and there are also other third parties you could move to, but how soon before Bsky corporate starts getting hostile to those?

For the record, I'm also on Mastodon and have been active on there too lately, and my Mastodon presence actually predates my ATproto presence by a couple years.

  • Age-gating killed them like it'll kill the rest of the web.

  • I thought Misskey/Sharkey was specifically trying to be a Pinterest alternative, while Pixelfed is trying to be an IG alternative and Mastodon is trying to be a Twitter alternative.

  • YT even has PeerTube as an alternative, and one I wish more people would use as Google inevitably locks down YT further.

  • Well, datacenters are pretty much Eminent Domaining people then.

  • Technically there's also Misskey/Sharkey, but that's more of a Pinterest alternative, as well as Friendica for a Facebook alternative and Mastodon for a Twitter alternative.

And GoToSocial is the nearest Fediverse alternative to the 'old web,' as it were, but you need to host that yourself.

Goodbye device ownership, and the last vestiges of free speech will die with this bill as well.

How feasible would it be to host Mastodon, Pixelfed, Lemmy, Friendica, or Matrix over Tor/I2P?

    RIP Mac Pro, I guess.
