In the fediverse since 2017. I mostly talk sports. If something on the internet doesn't spark joy, mute it.

Do not yell at me simply because I am in front of you and the people responsible for the problems are not. It is extremely unpleasant.

  • If you are looking for safety, your best bet (and I know this sounds bad but stick with me) is to go the Truth Social route and stand up a threadiverse instance and defederate from everyone. There really isn't privacy in fedi, but if you don't federate, it'll limit your exposure to only the admins of your instance.

  • It’s a piefed instance. One of the coolest things about the fediverse is that you can follow from different kinds of platforms, so some folks follow from a mastodon instance, or a sharkey instance, or a pixelfed instance, but they can still participate the same as people on a lemmy instance. Piefed is basically the same ui as you see, with a few minor differences, but some of them get pretty exotic.

  • I try to join all of the fediverse services to give em a fair shake. I haven’t tried Helos yet, and I can’t get into the wanderer instance I’m most interested in, but I’ve tried all the big ones: mastodon, loops, pixelfed, bookwyrm, funkwhale, etc. I’m a social media nerd so I like to stay up-to-date on what folks are doing in the space, and the fediverse is the one that most closely aligns with my values.

  • Just a heads’ up — the majority of accounts that will see this post aren’t from lemmy.world. For example, I’m from feddit.online. Your posts are federated, which means your instance, lemmy.world, passes your post to our instances, where we see them.

  • Platforms want you to know which platform and which user the text you’re copy-pasting comes from, so they make it much easier to screenshot the text than copy-paste it. Users encounter this often enough that they don’t even bother on platforms that behave better.

Introducing dynamic friction sounds like a pain in the ass -- your interviewer is gonna give you a half-assed question and then interrupt you halfway through -- as does having to review some llm-hallucinated business plan to identify its weaknesses.

  • They're missing a huge part of this: if you build a custom jira using an llm, no-one you hire will know how it works or how to use it. Everyone's used jira and the ramp time is infinitesimal, and your new pm might have some tricks from their previous workplaces; no-one wants to learn your new proprietary query language for the 18 months to 2 years they'll use your custom solution before you lay them off so that line goes up.

  • Well, as long as I have the piefed dev on the line, I'll request the number one masto feature I think would move the needle on alt text in the threadiverse: there's a user preference you can enable called "Warn me before posting media without alt text" that pops this modal when enabled

  • Mostly cultural. There’s a fair number of masto users who will not boost posts without alt text, and will say so in your mentions. Also the admin from the New Jersey instance runs a scoreboard for the instance that uses alt text most consistently that a fair number of people take seriously.

    edit: I think the cultural difference arose out of who the early adopters were -- a lot of early mastodon users were indie web folks who were interested in the w3c, and think a lot about accessibility on the web, whereas a lot of early threadiverse adopters were reddit refugees where it wasn't something people thought about as much.
