In the fediverse since 2017. I mostly talk sports. If something on the internet doesn't spark joy, mute it.

  • We’re having trouble finishing the light rail spur that is intended to serve my neighborhood, and our transit authority needs $300 million to complete the design. The budget shortfall is $34.5 billion on a projected $42.5 billion project. And that’s one line for one neighborhood in one city.

  • I suspect paying off the installment loan is your best bet, unless it a 0% apr loan, or there are penalties for early repayment. If that is the case, your best bet is to put the $1k in a 12 month certificate of deposit (a CD), which will get you a higher interest rate and remove a lot of the temptation to spend it early.

  • Ah, sorry. I did my best to understand your novel, and I guess I misunderstood your point. I hope you forgive me for giving up.

  • I don't think my argument is that you're misguided, or that empathy for other living creatures isn't good, I think my argument is that all the work necessary to end human slavery is prerequisite to ending ai or animal slavery, so it makes sense to build the broader coalition in service of the more achievable goal that is more likely to help conscious beings before extending it to other beings we suspect might be conscious. Milk before meat, so to speak.

  • I think if you’re afraid of enslaving conscious minds, your efforts are best spent ending human slavery, where we are most certain that conscious minds are being enslaved, rather than ending AI or animal slavery, which may or may not be the enslavement of conscious minds. Walk Free estimates in January of 2026 there were 50 million humans in slavery.

  • under oaf

Yes I think this is why Dr Frankenfurter creates Rocky in the first place

  • I only know about the French protectorates that play in concacaf -- do they also have some elsewhere? Otherwise it may not be much larger? Doesn't the Netherlands also have some far-flung colonies still?

  • And how much of the money that is stolen does a bank absorb as losses on its balance sheet?

  • How big can we reasonably get this percentage? If we measure from Maine to the furthest tip of the Aleutian isles and take the circumference further north is that significantly larger? What if we go from Puerto Rico to Guam or American Samoa?

  • I will warn you that there do exist people who will deliberately misunderstand you because there is someone else that they are arguing with and you just happen to be present, and no clarity of expression will get them to understand you. How you choose to deal with these people is up to you.

The best thing I did to improve my ability to speak persuasively is learn to write quickly. I studied literature, and it was common to take exams where you have to write a short essay in a quick timeframe in response to an excerpt from something you studied during your coursework. I spent a lot of time writing a few paragraphs making a point as quickly as possible, and then read back what I wrote and try to figure out how I could be more persuasive. It bled over into my speech and I still speak in paragraphs.

  • I think it's appropriate that the anglo-saxon word for fate, wyrd, is retained in English as the word "weird," because it seems folks only really turn to destiny as an explanation when something seems kinda strange and they don't have another explanation.

  • I'd say if you're looking for a microblogging site, the best experience is following Bluesky accounts via bridgy from mastodon or piefed or misskey or something. Most accounts don't bridge, so you mostly avoid getting dragged into things, but the big accounts do so you can mostly follow what's going on.

  • lost faith: yes

    refused to vote: no

  • Woof. They really went for it on my GitHub

Yes, there is code from 79 repositories in The Stack v3

  • Sometimes you can tell Zach is very active on Bluesky -- they've been yelling at each other about a study where people were offering $50k vs a 50% chance at $10m that I am very grateful hasn't been getting play on fedi.

    edit: what have I done

edit 2: to be fair they are actually fighting over $50k vs $1m and I just have a terrible memory
