In the fediverse since 2017. I mostly talk sports. If something on the internet doesn't spark joy, mute it.

Do not yell at me simply because I am in front of you and the people responsible for the problems are not. It is extremely unpleasant.

  • I’m referring here to protocol development, rather than community development. It was on my mind because of the announcement of the spaces alpha a few days ago. The canonical example of a community that exists outside of Bluesky is Blacksky, and I think the fact that it was built on ATProto rather than AcivityPub is the single greatest failure of the fediverse — our inability to create a space in which Black folks feel safe is our greatest shame.

  • From my limited outsider's perspective, things are tough right now. There's a lot of momentum behind ATProto, the biggest competitor to ActivityPub, and a lot of the people who are thinking about decentralized social media have moved over to working in the Atmosphere. We're also seeing a lot of pushback from existing users about improvements the social web foundation have been trying to implement, making them more wary and circumspect than they had been in the past. I'm somewhat anxious we'll get lapped.

  • Mostly, you can’t tell. There are some tells, for instance comments will often start by at mentioning op, and posts to communities will at mention the community in the post body, but oftentimes you just won’t notice. There’s a reasonable chance you’ve already read and/or replied to someone on another service already.

    I haven’t used lemmy in a year or so now, but last I knew, lemmy did not support following users directly. Piefed does, and I’m told mbin does as well. And let me tell you, having the capybara every hour account (@capybarahourly@mastodon.social) and the zoo twitter mirror account (@zootweetmirrorbot@mastodon.ai) in my feed has, in fact, greatly improved my experience.

  • One thing it's easy to miss about the fediverse is that it's not just lemmy users here. You'll see folks from friendica (which is like facebook) or pixelfed (which is like instagram) or mastodon (which is like twitter) or one of a dozen other services in the comments. Each one of them has a different culture and different ways of interacting, so assuming everyone is gonna act like you're used to from reddit is going to serve you poorly. My best advice is to always be actively kind to other people, and try not to complain too much about the mods or the admins -- no-one's get paid to be here (and many of us are actively paying for server fees) and no-one can stop you from saying anything you want, because you can always start your own community or stand up your own instance.

    Let’s be very pragmatic: when you have a handful of (sub)agents running in parallel, especially with models that don’t even show their reasoning beyond short occasional summaries, you’d spend hours just to figure out the simplest or most approachable of these workstreams. You try to understand something, do a bit of manual work, and hope you don’t break the internal consistency the agent was following.

  • The fediverse is my favorite social media. It does have fewer daily active users than many others, but I encounter more real people and fewer bots than many others. If there’s not as much stuff here as you were hoping, there’s a broader fediverse that we are connected with that may interest you, like pixelfed (like instagram) and loops (like TikTok) and mastodon (like twitter) that you can follow from piefed or mbin, while still having a similar ui to lemmy. Personably, I kind of like that I run out of posts to browse and have to go do something else.

  • I mean, if you have a masto account, like on mastodon.social or lgbtqia.space or wherever, you can post from that account to any community on the threadiverse (lemmy, piefed, mbin) by mentioning it in your post. So, for instance, you could include at-nwsl-at-lemmy.world (using the @ character instead of at-) in a mastodon post, and the resulting post would remain on your mastodon timeline, even if I moderated it from my NWSL community. If you want to see examples, a lot of the serious fediverse knowers post like this to !fediverse@fedia.io

  • I think you can get away with using the web crypto apis and storing the private key in indexeddb. If you want users to be able to change devices or recover after blowing away their client storage, allow the user to download their private key and save it to a password manager.
