  • Not a lawyer, but as far as I know this is another example of Trump highlighting shortcomings of current law. I believe you’re right that an EO can’t officially (re)name something like Lake Ontario (or the Gulf of Mexico, or Department of Defense). That said, Google, Apple, and Waze can choose to follow the order even though Congress has not passed any legislation addressing the name change either way (and this Congress likely just won’t). Similarly, official DOD correspondence now carries the “Dept. of War” letterhead, even though the name change was never made official by Congress.

    TL;DR: The people who are supposed to enforce the laws and the ones supposed to be making them are being very selective on which laws mean anything.

  • Gave you an upvote b/c I disagree with downvoting people stating what is likely true. It’s not like you’re being disingenuous, a troll, or anything like that.

    That said, I disagree that it doesn’t matter. The only way the Democratic Party will ever go back to being any kind of progressive party is for the voters to defeat centrist primary candidates.

    Will she win the general election? Unlikely, but it’s not like her primary victory doesn’t count. It’s a message to the party, even if she loses. Stop nominating centrist Republicans who are fine with LGBTQ & abortion rights. Start nominating people who want to serve & better their communities rather than enrich themselves. People are fed up, and they’re starting to do something about that. On the national scale, it starts with primary victories.

    As more voters see people like Mamdani actually doing good things for regular people (and of course not imposing Sharia law like all the right wing talking heads “predicted”), the more democratic socialism will lose the taint it’s been given by both major parties.

  • Intel is starting to show some fight too. Not much, but the B70 isn’t a bad offering for the right use case.

    Problem is NVIDIA has a complete stack on offer. Hardware (all the HW, not just the GPUs), networking and software stack are all tightly integrated. They didn’t do it overnight - they bought Mellanox awhile back, and Cumulus a little after that. That got them Infiniband & Ethernet products. It’s pretty impressive, and it’s a pretty big hill for the competition to compete with. Still, there’s hope.

  • I'm not actually blaming voters, though I can see how I came off that way (I do, however blame the ones who voted for Trump anytime after 2016 - people make mistakes). They haven't had much choice, where health care is concerned. The probably falls under the "both sides" argument in that neither party is willing to phase out, or significantly reduce, private health insurance in this country. For sure, there are a handful of Dems, and the odd unicorn Rep, who understand that single-payer is likely to be more cost effective at delivering consistent care. It also doesn't help that the Republicans have gone off the deep end in the past couple decades. Makes it unlikely that anything will change in my lifetime. One of the main reasons I don't plan on staying after retirement.

  • They've voted for it every single time they've voted for a Republican or most Democrats since at least the 1950s or 60s.

    Also don't forget that the second highest (at the time) number of Americans in history voted for it another time in 2020. Fortunately the highest ever number voted for the other guy (who also didn't want to fix the problem, but at least didn't want this!).
