    R134 was the “safe” refrigerant to replace R-12 because R12 is 11000x more potent of a ghg than co2

    There are some new refrigeration units that use R600 but the vast majority of refrigerators are still R134

    R600 being a highly flammable gas (it’s butane) has slowed its rollout a lot. Hence why a solid state non volatile refrigerant is still a cool development

  • Old school refrigerants were absolutely horrendous ghg even modern ones are pretty bad with R134 being 1430x worse of a ghg than CO2

    If we can reduce that, that’s good! And metals like titanium are recyclable so yes initially extracting them is bad but the full lifecycle isn’t as terrible

    Community college can make networking with professors harder. However considering the laughably small percentage of people who ever do undergrad research this doesn’t matter for most people.

  • In capitalism as a whole economic mobility is not very prevalent. If you are born poor you generally have a worse education, worse nutrition, worse job prospects, etc

    If you are born rich it is orders of magnitude easier to end up in a high paying career since you have a financial support system

    The idea here would be to make sure everyone is given the same tools to succeed and the same options. For example anyone who can pass their could go to med school vs only people who can afford to go without a livable income for 13 years while working 60-100 hours weeks

    Then you reward people who choose to do things others don’t want to do which is the compromise

    You can have that as home as well where the person who cleans the bathroom gets an extra cookie after dinner

    This is in huge contrast to capitalism where the owner of the house gets the entire box of cookies and is benevolent enough to spare a pittance of food in exchange for the bathroom being cleaned

    Everyone would have their basic needs met, and nobody would have 10,000x what other people have

  • They are claiming a weight of 400Wh/kg so the extra weight should be at least another 70lbs if it didn’t require any extra bracing which it probably does that while it may not be a lot for a 3000lb car it is sizeable for a 400lb bike

    it’s a lot worse than other EV makers misleading claims, because 12mph is literally a joke of a speed to test at considering that’s slower than a cyclist on a non motorized bike and it is not even considering a fast speed to run at.

    A still misleading but at least defendable claim would be if they did one at 25mph and called that their city range but 12mph is just an insulting claim

  • Adding the extra weight of the battery will reduce the range but more importantly going 12mph is not a way of rating a street legal vehicle… it’s like bragging about a laptop having a 30 day battery life when it’s in standby. Drag is a function of velocity squared which means that going at even 45mph you are experiencing 14x the drag and at 60mph it’s 25x the drag

  • Your rent right now can be thought of as a large payment split into 12 equal pieces (even though months aren’t actually equal) and your rent payment is just 1/12 of that. If there were 13 months it would just be split into 1/13 so each months payments would be slightly smaller to be the same total

    If we transitioned it would take years and for at least some amount of time of overlap they would show both prices so it would be much harder for them to just jack up the price like they would prefer to do

  • I wrote a school report about iter back in middle school or high school when it was still in the design process and still occasionally check their job listings because I would love to work there and on fusion but we still don’t know if it will ever work like we hit the scientific breakeven with inertial confinement but the scaling on that is terrible and I don’t believe we hit even the scientific breakeven with magnetic confinement

    Then we still need to harness the energy from that turn it into work, turn that into electricity and distribute it with enough excess to pay for the whole system which is still a lot of hurdles we need to climb

  • You can use soap with it.

    I have been using the same cast irons for a decade and I use dawn dish soap, scrape it with stainless steel pads, cook acidic foods in it, have accidentally left it on a burner on high for long enough it set off a smoke alarm twice, let them soak with water overnight occasionally, and heat shock them about half the time I use them.

    They have no damage and they cost under $20 brand new. You shouldn’t use lye based soap on them because that causes saponification of the seasoning but even if you do all you have to do is reseason them. Cast irons are only a lot of work if you follow imaginary rules with them, basically the only thing you shouldn’t do is put them in the dishwasher

    Once your data is out there it’s essentially impossible to get it back

  • You know rough dimensions you don’t have a robot going through and literally mapping every item on the floor, high traffic areas , details about amount of people that live there, possible pets, and then tying it to your IP and then selling that to advertisers.

    The crazy thing isn’t that they do that it’s that you have to pay money for an item that then does that without your permission and if you attempt to stop it they brick your item that you paid hundreds of dollars for

    I don’t know for certain if they sell your data (but they probably do) but you can use a wifi router and how it reflects in a room you can fully map a room with enough accuracy that you can tell what a person is typing on a keyboard which is kind of terrifying if you think about it

  • Trainees aren’t as good at the job as someone who is experienced

    People with disabilities who can do the job without accommodations want full wages, the ones with accommodations need accommodations that can make the amount saved not worth it

    Desperate people are no longer desperate after they get a job and can then apply for a better position somewhere else so the company has the same problem as hiring trainees

    Companies do outsource a lot but generally the people who aren’t outsourced an impractical to outsource

    As for a company that does hire the disabled, skillcraft employs the blind to make office supplies for the U.S. government. They don’t need to worry as much about being competitive because of a law passed that says that all office supplies must be purchased from a company that predominately hires the blind
