  • Oh I also get judged for my Thanksgiving plate. I mix up my mashed potatoes, gravy, a little stuffing, and turkey, and then shove this mix into the middle of a roll and eat it that way.

    With the exception of the mashed potatoes that’s just standard Boxing Day supper in Newfoundland. Similarly, and even more popular, start with bread, then turkey and gravy on top, to make a hot turkey sandwich, then on the side start with fries and top with stuffing (we call it dressing here) and gravy, and you’ve got a side of FDG (fries dressing and gravy) which is the greatest thing on earth. I love me some poutine but fries dressing and gravy beats it out every time.

  • For most people they don’t think of liberalism as a specific thing, they literally just consider liberal and left to be the same thing, and conservative and right to be the same thing. It’s not that they’re trying to say nothing left of liberalism is legitimate or something, it’s just that literally everything left is under the branch of liberalism. It’s not thought of as a specific subset of the left, it is the left, and various degrees of leftism are all considered part of liberalism. Again, not saying that’s correct obviously, it’s just how most people here see it.

    Yeah, the NDP (New Democratic Party) is what you’re thinking of. They’ve only really had one good shot at having their party leader elected for Prime Minister, but then he got cancer and died from it. The NDP still wins local areas though. A lot of the right wing voters here aren’t even necessarily conservative, just anti-liberal. I’ve known lots of conservatives who would happily vote for the NDP too, just not the liberals. We also have the Green Party which is more of an environmental party who are useful for approving conservation efforts but don’t have a serious shot at PM. They have some great local leaders though. Then there’s the Bloc Québécois who are only in Quebec obviously, and they stand for French rights. They do quite well in Quebec typically but again, no shot at PM.

  • For most of Canadians and I think Americans, liberal = anything left of centre, while conservative = anything right of centre. I know that’s not what those strictly mean but that’s the generally accepted definitions here at least, and I’m pretty sure in the states too.

  • I know a lot of people who hate watching just part of a movie. I’m one of those people too, though I also don’t really like tv shows normally. I’d rather a standalone film over one in a series as well. If I’m going to watch something, I want it to start and end in the same sitting, and ideally be 90-120 minutes, though there are exceptions of course.

  • People tend to be more willing to do a lot of something if it’s broken up into smaller parts.

    As an example, my great-grandmother used to always cut desserts and appetizers into smaller sizes if she noticed they weren’t being eaten. No one would take a large slice of cake but lots of people would take a small slice and then another small slice after. My grandmother took that advice from her and so did my mom, and it really does work very well. Same applies to movies and tv shows.

  • My wife trained one of our cats to play fetch just a few days ago! She absolutely loves it now (the cat, not my wife. Though my wife does still have fun with it).

  • My first thought too. I love records, my record setup is where nearly all of my hobby money goes into, but I’d never recommend a suitcase player to anyone. I don’t have a ton of hobby money to spend so my setup isn’t super expensive or anything but I did make sure to get a nice player at least. Low-to-mid range speakers and pre-amps and stuff can still be okay, especially these days the lower end is getting a lot better, but a cheap player can do actual damage to a record over time.

    If someone reading this is looking to get into the hobby, do yourself a favour and save up a bit for the player. You can get cheap speakers and all that and upgrade later but a bad player can ruin your records over time, especially if you spin them regularly. I personally have a Pro-Ject Debut III, you can switch between a built-in pre-amp or an external one, so you can start with the built-in one and then get a dedicated one later on to help with initial costs, and Pro-Ject makes excellent players. Zero plastic anywhere except the dust cover, European company and hand made in Europe, so you’re not supporting American business if that’s important to you, and even their lower end players are still very well made with all the features you’d want (adjustable anti-skate and counterweight, switch between 33/45/78 rpm, soft drop for the needle so it doesn’t hurt the record, high quality materials, comes with a pretty decent diamond cartridge, etc) plus they tend to be pretty easily upgradable. Audio-Technica is also supposedly pretty good at that price range but I never found one I loved, meanwhile every Pro-Ject I’ve messed around with has been a genuine pleasure to operate. I’m not an expert but I do have a bit of a hobbyist knowledge and experience if anyone has questions.

  • I’m not sure if it’s possible but a mini pro but with good battery life would be the ultimate phone for me personally. I’m basically always on my feet but use my phone a lot so a large battery is important, but I also want a small phone and a good camera. I doubt that’ll happen though.

  • Yeah that was basically my thought too. I probably do less than a quarter of that on average, but that’s not really the point. I should be allowed as much time as I want. Not that I use a Nvidia subscription anyway, but still. This makes me mad on behalf of other people.
