  • This was back in 2015ish, they're probably making ~$20/h these days but still. Yeah some people had a CNA but a lot of that job was people that were unemployable elsewhere for reasons other than straight up crime (for the most part, anyway. There were a few employees with DUIs, public intoxication, etc). I was young and had found out about the job from being hospitalized there and went back because from the care I received I figured it couldn't be that hard to be better at that job (it wasn't, but not by as much as I would have hoped) and, most importantly, I wanted to #HelpPeople.

    The upside is that job on a psych nurse resume is basically an instant callback. I might get paid shit but as long as I'm upright and don't have too bad of a TBI I'll basically never be jobless. I've gotten callbacks within 12h of applying, one of them I didn't even finish / submit. I also graduated early into COVID then worked straight through so my resume is just overall fucking baller. If I wasn't too AuDHD to deal with learning a new hospital every 12 weeks I could probably make bank as a travel nurse. I really enjoyed teaching self defense and restraint classes this last year so I really just need to go back to school and get my masters.

    And compared to when I was young and stupid people listen when I start telling stories so that's been somewhat affirming. It'll probably make an utterly wild memoir if I live about 30 more years. Hubs says he wants to take me to one of those crowd work shows because siccing me on people at parties is starting to get boring.

  • Most of them actually. Am a nurse and was once psychiatrically hospitalized alongside a train conductor and we really bonded over our ridiculous and yet supposedly "high reliability industry" jobs. She actually got hooked on speedballs because there's some weird loophole in our state where the train conductors need to give something like 48–72h notice or something to take sick leave so most of them just show up for their 16h shifts fucked up on amphetamines to stay awake then benzos so the amphetamines don't give them tachycardia and one of her managers actually basically gave her a pep talk on which doctors to go to and what to say to get them prescribed legally but given that they're both extremely addictive substances her dosages spiraled wildly out of control extremely quickly such that she was only able to get effective doses extralegally. On the plus side though losing that job and getting shipped to the other end of the state just to find a bed got her away from both her dealer and her cartoonishly abusive ex (even a week into her stay the bruising was pretty wild). And then actually when I left the hospital my third time I met my now husband in partial although we lost touch for like a year until we ran into each other again and he helped me escape my much more subtly shitty relationship and actually graduate / get licensed (if you think nurse pay is shit I was getting paid $12.50 as a nursing assistant working with criminally insane men and that was after the promotion).

  • Psych nurses are famous for being mentally ill. I'm relatively certain that at least 25% of my coworkers have been hospitalized before.

  • I feel like they probably knew. Almost gives a christological / martyr narrative, which I hope at least MLK would appreciate given his background. Certainly took balls on all of their parts.

  • idk how to respond to this other than yeah it's probably gonna suck. Tbh I wouldn't WANT them to go big budget and especially not cinematic; a big draw of Stargate was that people who have worked or lived in similar institutional settings are like,"yup that's the vibe!" and Amazon will probably drag things out they shouldn't just for the extra draaama.

  • They're mostly trick taking games similar to spades or hearts and there's very few apps to get into them that aren't in Italian or French let alone any local groups to learn that aren't in France or Italy.

    I've been trying to develop a solitaire game that uses the star chart of a chosen date-time/location as the board but I'm having difficulty working out the core mechanic of the 12 point solitaire game let alone the sign/house/planet modifiers.

    And before you mention clock solitaire there's basically no actual choice in that game all of the moves are purely determined by the state dealt at the beginning.

    Actually now I'm wondering if that's the best uncomplicated base mechanic and the other items will just modify it such that the game is consistently winnable.

    If anyone has any good thoughts on game design my other thoughts were:

    clock solitaire assigns piles by number, kings in the middle. A tarot deck also has a full set of trumps. So I'm thinking split the clock into signs and assign piles by the element of their sign. So for instance the cardinal sign's pile will build pips down from the five, the fixed's pile will build pips down from the ten and the mutable's pile will build courts down from the king. Trumps can go in the middle (and as a bonus your deck is sorted when you're done).

    (Actually I haven't decided whether sign or house is the part that determines pile I'm leaning towards sign right now but I've flip flopped like three times in this comment so)

    Other misc thoughts:

    • as mentioned, pure clock solitaire is not consistently winnable due to the deterministic nature of it's play. All moves from beginning to end are purely a result of the original deal. It's the arrangement of the houses and planets in your chosen date -time/location that will add extra powers top make it winnable. This is similar to a Minecraft seed. The board arrangement will always be the same if you pick your birthday, the card locations will just change.
    • what sign and planet show up in each house should affect gameplay. Haven't decided on what yet.
    • I would also really like choosing a court or face trump as a signifier card for the player or players to mean something.
  • Tell you what. These are my hyperfixations by decade of life:

    1. Stargate SG1
    2. Anatomy and Physiology, Psychology, and Sociology of Sex
    3. Violence Prevention and Management in Psychiatry (actually became enough of an expert in this to teach)
    4. Esoteric Spiritual Practices including Tarot, Astrology, and Tea Leaf reading.

    AMA, LOL

  • And even within that, T4T is a common preference categorization as well, whether it's for inherent attraction or just practical reasons. There are terms that prefer solely to the target gender so for instance I'm androphilic (vs gynophilic) mostly in my romantic aspect. I don't mind both sexually, I've just found women's personalities to be difficult to deal with / have difficulty dealing with me romantically (practical preference). Now, gender wise I'm roughly here:

    ♀️<----------|×--------->♂️

    And my visual preference for a partner is about

    ♀️<------|---|------|---->♂️

    And my personality preference is about

    ♀️<---------||---|------>♂️

    so really CAN I be gay? Especially if I was right on the line there. I will say hubs seems to prefer roughly (in both aspects):

    ♀️<--|-------|-----|---->♂️

    which is pretty neatly bisexual.

  • Cleaning you is waaay easier than disimpaction. If it's bad enough I have to call someone who doesn't work holidays, weekends, or any other hour a bank isn't open. If it's NOT bad enough to call that person, that's actually way worse because it's gonna be you, me, and these phalanges, and neither of us is gonna be having a good time. Now that I work in a tiny community hospital I don't even have residents I can sucker into it anymore!

  • In nursing school they taught us anything from 2x daily to 1x weekly is normal due mostly to variations in diet but with some influence from activity level, hydration, and genetics. Now I'm in practice that seems too long; I start getting nervous when my patients say it's been 3-4 days. Personally I poop between 4x daily and once every 3 days depending on how angry my IBS is. I do HAVE to know what part of the world you're in now though.

  • Oh this happens to me a lot actually I specialize almost specifically handling this kind of patient as a nurse (I started out on a unit for criminally insane men and now work lower acuity using that experience to mostly help and educate other nurses when they occasionally run into it).

    Basically you do everything you can to look like you're ignoring it while actually keeping yourself safe, then let the natural consequences slap them in the face like a cartoon character stepping on a rake.

    So for me that looks like doing my assessment / negotiation (what looks like) alone a few steps into the door but I actually have two people outside on either side of the doorframe. I then also have multiple witnesses to all of the bullshit they spew and write it down for someone to read to the judge at their hearing.

    For you it's more likely something like recording your interactions then giving those to someone who can make their life suck.

  • Temporal bedroom divorce. I'm only in it during the day he's only in it at night. Sometimes I try to snuggle up to him while he's sleeping for a midnight nap and he gets up to move to the couch and I cry a little inside. Nice to have no sleeping disruptions but a lot less cuddles.

  • You've got it reversed; less insecticide = more ladybugs = less aphids. Ladybugs are their natural predator and can actually be bought from breeders along with stuff like tomato worm wasps as a natural non-chemical pest control.

    I was also taught as a kid to only kill the tomato worms without eggs laid on them:

    You let those ones live because the eggs are gonna hatch and eat it then make more wasps that will eat more tomato worms.

  • Yeah convenience culture will have to die. To keep food not in plastic and not shipped halfway across the world you're going to gave to give up getting your favorite flavor of dorito from the gas station at 2am. They won't be able to package specialty flavors at a plant 600mi away then seal them in airtight nitrogen and ship them all over the country to that stores that are open 24/7 where they'll be shelf stable for the next few months. You'll have to order them by mail yourself or make do with local / regional variants made with different ingredients. The kids who stop eating when their dino nuggies have a different breading are just gonna starve (had an ex like that at 25y/o he was exhausting.)

  • similarly with working in mental health. my first job was also with criminally insane men so in addition to the low pay it was also stupidly dangerous. but now that I'm an RN on a lower acuity unit and one of the few nurses with that kind of high acuity experience so it did give me something valuable? 😭
