  • Wow, this one cut close to the bone. I'm only slightly different: I don't have too much trouble being vulnerable, and maybe as a result, I have a number of friends that are closer than acquaintances, but I'm terrible at maintaining them. My long-time friends are all either people who can go a long time without connecting and still feel close, or they're the ones who are good about reaching out.

    But all the stuff about being overly independent at an early age, preferring to just do things myself rather than ask for help, etc.: that's all spot-on. I'm old - not sure how realistic it is for me to change something so fundamentally me.

  • Honestly, I feel the same way. This "he who shall not be named" thing is dumb. If the song is offensive, it's still going to be offensive if you replace it be saying "the N word" or whatever. But I'd also go back to the "know your audience" thing. If there's someone in ear shot who is going to be triggered by a white person singing it, then maybe don't sing it.

  • We always told our kids that if we heard them saying something hurtful, they were going to get in trouble, whether or not they used a cuss word. If they used a cuss word in a way that wasn't hurtful, we didn't care. The caveat being that lots of other adults, including many teachers, do care, so they should watch their audience.

    By the same token, if they were singing a song or quoting someone that used a cuss word, we'd rather they say the word than self-censor it. If everyone know what word you mean, what's the point?

  • Doesn't look like you'll be affected for that. If I'm understanding the release right, it's only needed if you're trying to access age restricted content or to get messages from people you might not know. I use it the way you do, and it doesn't look like that's impacted.

  • I would desperately love for companies to lose big on LLMs. The vast majority of users just don't seem worth the huge energy costs. I do think there are a number of worthwhile ML applications that could make the world better, but I have little faith that they'll be allowed to unless they generate big profits.

  • That's awesome. We've had one get to 20, and at least one to 19, but more than 20 is pretty rare regardless of the record. I believe they say average is between 13 and 20. My current cat is 15, but was recently diagnosed with kidney disease, which is a life shortener generally (super common in cats).

  • My dad was 45 when he had me, yours was 18. I had the opposite experience because my parents were so much older than my friends' parents. I think that's the biggest part of what you're seeing: your dad is just younger than your friends' dads.

    But to your broader question, there is no way a person is "supposed to act" at a given age, but there are some norms. For instance, a lot of folks who party a lot in their teens and twenties get bored with that at some point. Also, working to earn a living to feed the family often leaves people more with out and preferring something quiet at home to going out with a bunch of people.

  • For me it's eggs with either bacon or sausage (cut up, so they're easier to eat in a sandwich), some kind of cheese (lately a havarti with jalapeno), and either just mayo or some bang bang sauce.
