    Point is that there are instances set up in ways to have less of the shit you're complaining about, but instead you're using an instance that isn't... and complaining about it.

  • Part of the user base issue is the same with most "alternative social media". A not-insignificant amount of the users will be here because their behavior got them banned from or wasn't tolerated in other spaces.

  • At this point I think a lot of people, OP included, would tolerate plenty more noise as long as it isn't "everything sucks and you should be mad about it!"

    Yeah, signal is better than noise, but the signal itself becomes noise when it's all so damn much doom and gloom and aggression and frustration and generally negative emotions. It's not healthy to constantly drink from the fire hose of "this is everything wrong with everything"

    And as an aside, I find that the quality of conversation around a lot of the political "signal" has been slipping too.

  • Looks to me like an out of focus shot of Joey, the guy that wrote the "a softer world" comics, sitting on the ground.

    It's more of an artsy webcomic than necessarily a comedic one, although there are plenty of funny ones. Some of them are more musings about the world than anything else, as I feel this one is.

    This is a particular message that stuck with me in the more than a decade since I first read it, and it's damn good advice.

  • Fair enough. I work in IT but endpoint config and group policy isn't my area at work, so most of my experience is with my personal computers at home. I at least usually hear the latest bullshit Microsoft is pulling from our endpoint management/config guy.

    I should also bear in mind that I stripped down and customized the hell out of the install media before I last installed Windows on any of my devices, and I've run a shit ton of other customization/privacy/debloat tools afterwards as well. Usually by examining the policy and registry edits or PowerShell code they run and just picking and choosing parts for myself. Lots of good tools out there, but none I trust to do exactly what I want with no oversight or investigation.

    I'd still say that Group Policy is usually the best option for configuration shit sticking though, due to it being Microsoft's "business side" solution for endpoint config for quite a while now.

  • Except that these are group policy settings. The stuff they provide to allow businesses to manage their endpoints. Businesses that actually have enough size and money for Microsoft to care. Businesses that can have strict audit and data security requirements relating to things like not allowing data to even brush against something like OneDrive.

    To be more direct, the only reason I can't count the number of times they've broken a Group Policy is because I legitimately don't recall it happening in the past decade.

  • Why did this need to be an "app" that lives in your tray? You can whip this up in most scripting languages in an hour max, and if you can't easily set a keybinding for it with what you're using then you can set up AHK to run it.

    Hell, the whole thing could be done in AHK completely with dynamically setting your "safe" window with a different key combo.

    Capture the current focused window's PID with one keybinding, or the window title, or some other unique identifier of your choice.

    Another keybinding mutes, switches to desktop, then maximizes previously saved window. If previously saved window does not exist, does some sort of backup action, like opening a reasonable Google search.

  • Well that was quite the unexpected little treat! Wasn't clear where it was going at first but was well worth just riding along with the feel of the setting until it all came together in the end. Great short story! Thanks for sharing it!

    If that's available in print I need to pick it up. If it's not I need to call a local copy shop.

  • If you have some solution that doesn't involve time travel, the world is all ears. As always, the only options available are to do as much as you can where you can, and realize you're up against a tide of people who aren't going to put in that kind of effort.

    If you really think the the situation is that dire and that the solution is so obvious and easy that it justifies the kind of snark you're displaying, it reflects more on you than anyone else that you're here shitposting instead of taking the direct action you think is so critical and obvious. If you've got the answer, go and prove it.

  • I, uh, definitely would have worded this with more care, but if anyone believes their side is somehow immune to corporate interests funding or manipulating drama and outrage? It's dumb to think that the rich sociopaths would uniquely mess with one political side while leaving another completely alone.

    Nothing to do with any side being right, wrong, better, or worse. Everything to do with rish assholes being rich assholes.

    As far as them showing their ass again, I'm pretty sure that by the time you made this comment, they had already made their "public statement". And doubled down.

    They claim that the targeting of trans/queer places was due to the violent rhetoric they saw going on in the spaces. Surely it's against deserving targets, but this guy feels that calling for the death of people isn't ok no matter the target. Theoretically if there had been spaces not allowing that, they wouldn't have blocked those ones.

    We won't know because the spaces that do exist do also allow it. Personally I think that people should be able to express those extreme emotions, and that other people shouldn't be forced to see it if they don't want to. Personal filters, potentially based off crowd-sourced lists are what makes sense to me. My issue with this whole thing is that they did it secretly, and did not actually give users options to opt-out. Then at that point there's not even a point about arguing what the motivations were.

    But as it stands, the guy's an ass. And confirmed it in less than 12 hours.

  • As of around 7 hours ago, there's a closed issue on the repo's tracker from someone upset they were on the secret list, and the maintainer closed the issue stating that they'd make an official statement once everyone cooled off. Also that the issue tracker wasn't the right place for that discussion.

    This indicates that they are aware of the threads about this stuff here on Lemmy.

    Please don't dogpile the issue tracker, and give an opportunity for cooler heads to prevail. Trust that if they're a piece of shit it won't take long for them to confirm it (again) loud and clear. Not saying this isn't a whole big bunch of bullshit, just that they should at least get a small opportunity to respond with their side.

    If you hand someone a shovel and they use it to dig their hole deeper instead of filling it in, it's even more fun to watch them fall in.
