  • If I did it right now same thing would happen... With 2 different liquor stores

  • Fun fact...the chip maker and the calculator company are completely seperate. Don't really know why it's fun but well it is a fact.

  • Years ago (early 90s) my mother had a female friend. The friend had an uncle "Tony" no idea if a real uncle or just friend of family.

My mother's friend also had a sister who was engaged. One night sister and fiance got into a fight and it hit violent. Sister ended up in hospital for a week, several broken bones and multiple injuries. Somehow, "Tony" found out. The next morning the boyfriend woke up and left the house for work. He never showed up to work. He never was seen or heard of again. Maybe he's buried, maybe he's in the walls of a building or under the pavement of a road. I have no idea, but sister got a beating and when "Tony" found out he ensured the guy would beat anyone else ever.

Thought of another instance, even less details on this. Coworker was from Trinidad. One day he didn't show up, ok cool everyone takes time off. Next day he is also not at work, I ask manager and told "he had a family emergency". I think it was a week later he returned and I was curious and talked with him. He told me he had relatives in Trinidad and one started a new job at a port basically checking to make sure fees were paid and paperwork was filled out. There was a boat with a shipping container that was not documented and was not labeled. He opened container, supposedly top to bottom, front to back was white powder. I assume coke but could be anything. He closed the container and kept silent to not cause issues with the gangs. He went home, told family what he saw over dinner, then went to bar for a drink. Next morning he wasn't in his bed. He wasn't in the home. He told someone what he saw and that was a mistake. The ship was docked and allowed to leave. Maybe corruption, maybe not... Don't know, don't want to know.

  • The part that irritates me is the act like they can't refund anything after "the store confirmed the order". One time I meant to check the price of a liquor bottle, dropped phone, between trying to prevent it falling and picking it up I touched the purchase button. The store "confirmed the order" within 30 seconds. Since the store confirmed the order and started "preparing the order" I could cancel it but couldn't get a refund. The issue? It was 11:15pm. Legally liquor stores can't sell packaged liquor after 9pm here. Either a. The store didn't confirm anything and have be not started preparing anything b. The store is openly defying multiple laws. The c. The you are full of shit. Plus what's "preparing" a bottle of liquor? Why can't you send a notification of "put it back on shelf" and be done? Fine yeah my mistake of accidentally pressing button, maybe a 10% "restocking fee" still bullshit but acceptable. Not being able to cancel order at all though???

If it's not clear, the store was closed but order was defaulted to be delivered at 11am the next day as that was next available legal delivery time.

  • True, Ace is cool from a technical wow that's possible perspective but I much prefer the traditional chain running cook tricks type of runs.

  • You would probably be interested in TAS. It's tool assisted speed runs, basically how fast can you setup a bot to beat a game. Celeste is especially impressive to watch, chaining frame perfect tricks back to back to back for the entire game.

  • One of the coolest examples I saw a few years ago was for an automated optical inspection. You would take a picture and identify all the critical features and then manually check like 50 parts, varied between good and bad and marking why the bad ones were bad. Afterwards just throw a part under the camera and it could accurately tell good from bad with about 99% accuracy(biased towards false failures). Granted it was about 35k just for the camera and software but still really impressive.

It could locate the part and rotate the image with no fixturing and each inspection was between 10-90 milliseconds depending on what features were being inspected.

  • I feel like both are valuable for different purposes. Do you really have specific requirements? For example a piece of software to dispense a defined amount of a medication into a bottle. It requires plus/minus 1 ml accuracy for health safety. It will use Acme Corp stepper motor to operate the dispenser which has its own requirements. It will operate on arm based Linux for low cost. These are requirements, they will not change. We will sell the device with a high definition screen with 1080p(no one is gaming or watching movies on a medication dispenser, no need for 4k or 8k).

Then there are more agile things. Some pharmacies are 24hrs, the users want a dark mode so it's easy on eyes at night. Don't write specific colors for buttons into your requirements at beginning. Some prescriptions are sold between 10ml to 5 L(making up numbers) so users want a touch pad to enter values instead of up and down buttons(pressing up 5000 times would be a pain). How users enter amount should not be a requirement at beginning. These can change and should use a agile approach.

Requirements in my mind are things were changing is a huge investment and would require a new round of design. Those should be defined up front. That's waterfall. Other aspects should be easier to change based on whims of customer. That's agile.

If a customer says we like your software but want to use Other Corp motor, no sorry not compatible. If customer wants their logo in corner should be doable.

  • I reviewed the article but not the paper direct but this could be very beneficial knowledge for gi doctors. I wouldn't be surprised to see this at least nominated for a ig nobel prize.

  • As always, best choice is it's depends on situation

  • Yeah if your only storing username and passwords and hoping no one uses the same username. Now consider I'm running tests on a piece of hardware and storing results in the database. I run 45 tests per unit so I can't use serial number as id, I want a way to get all results for a single unit and I have 5 testers since I'm high volume but each test takes 30 seconds.

Tester 1 and tester 4 might get same pk if offline, random IDs for each record won't work since I can't combine everything for 1 unit. This is more why you use uuids for each test

  • Everything up to the laser welding was as a teenager.

  • I have the opposite situation at the moment. I bought a bag food, early last week. It was delivered last Thursday. It is supposedly suppose to arrive today, still waiting for it to be "out for delivery" though. We will see what happens, like when it's delivered they are supposed to take a picture but it's already in my kitchen.

  • I want like a sub sandwich with American cheese coated with manwich ...

  • Can we just go to the theater?I hear there's a new play "gay the musical"...

  • Yes

  • When I was in school the had us do this mental health / stress questionnaire. It was graded something like less than 20 your pretty stress free, 20-40 average stress level, 40-60 high stress, 60+ you should seek professional help dealing with stress.

I got 97... In the previous 2 years, my father got cancer, died, my mother lost her job, family dog died, I failed a class. Each of them was 15 points and there were some minor ones I also check off. I was taken out of class, had meeting with principal guidance counselor and mother and the school required me to see a psychiatrist... surprise that series of events didn't lower my stress

  • I like doing what I call "building up" my sauce. Like a jar of store bought sauce, a large diced onion grilled till translucent, 1 or 2 diced peppers, a can of tomato paste, a can of tomato sauce, a can of diced tomatoes, a lb of browned ground beef, a package of sliced mushrooms, some mozzarella cheese, some Parmesan cheese, some ricotta cheese, a few cloves of garlic, basil, onion powder, garlic powder, rosemary, paprika, a dash of cloves, thyme

Pour into a pot, medium heat for maybe 45 minutes to an hour, boil pasta to aldente ,layer of sauce, layer of pasta, optionally a layer of sausage slices , a layer of cheese, a layer of sauce, a layer of pasta, a layer of sauce, optional sausage, a layer of cheese and bake at 350 for an hour...

Typically that can feed my teenage son, girl friend and myself for like 4 days and sometimes throw out the end because we are sick of eating so much pasta for 4 days...
