  • I wasn't exactly brave or stubborn, I was vindictive. Once my mother got mad at me and took away my computer. I in turn took the main power breaker from the house.

    Another time she got mad at me and took my car keys... I set an alarm for 3am, went outside and took her car battery. Now I know what you're thinking "she has your keys, she'll just use your car", I also took my car battery. Both were carried about 1/4 mile into the woods that surrounded our home. Next day she tried to leave for work about the same time I had to start walking to the bus stop for school. Yeah... She was not happy but I got my car keys back!

  • I had a great manager a few years ago. Basically it was a manufacturing job. At the beginning of the shift(or near it) he would come by you and say something like "I need 150 devices done tonight". Near the end of the shift he would come by and ask how many devices you got done.

    As long as you got done the number he asked for he didn't care. Take an extra 10 minutes on lunch? Having stomach issues and used the bathroom for 30 minutes? Take a personal phone call? Had a chat with a co-worker about how they got engaged this weekend? All perfectly acceptable, as long as you got done with the 150 devices. If a machine broke or some material ran out so you couldn't complete it? Acceptable because it was outside of your control.

    That said, if you didn't get the number he wanted done but everything at your station was fine I'll describe him with 3 attributes 1. Puerto Rican 2. Ex-marine 3. Drill Sargent!

    Next few days he would be on you for every thing since you showed you couldn't be trusted to do what was expected. He would check periodically that you were at your station. He would check every hour or so to make sure you were on schedule to get the required work done that day instead of just checking at end of day. This of course added extra work for him which he didn't like. Do it too often and you had a not so nice "meeting".

    But... Do what was expected (almost always reasonable) and he left you alone. You didn't have to watch a clock for exact minutes. It was assumed you were an adult and could accomplish what was asked without constant monitoring, until you proved you couldn't.

  • I do but it was a long day and didn't have the time or energy to do that. I was in the hospital all day with my son(nothing major just an appointment and blood draw but he's epileptic and severely autistic so yeah). Maybe I'll do something more today.

  • Within reason this is true but you also have to agree that it often goes too far. Not everything needs to be an interface or factory. For example if your making a pdf viewer dont concern yourself with abstracting how to open a file, you know it will be a pdf. If someone opens a gif with a pdf reader it's ok to give an error. Plus to me a lot of "maintainable" code is difficult to work with because there's so many levels of abstraction and functions spread across multiple files I can't keep all that in my head.

    Also if you only need one or two functions you don't need to import a whole library. For example look up "handmade hero" and see how Casey works with the windows libraries.

  • Interesting, that's not how I normally make chicken spaghetti. Normally I boil the chicken, shred it, boil pasta Al dente, warm sauce, mix together with extra shredded cheese, put in a baking pan and bake till the top is slightly crispy.

    Your recipe sounds good too just different from my usual and figure I'd put in a different thought.

  • Some weird combinations work. My favorite example is grape jelly and chili sauce mixed at 50/50 each and slow cooked over meatballs. Sounds crazy but actually really tasty.
