I started having arguments online back on Fidonet and Usenet. I'm too tired to care now.

  • Using Bluesky as the non-algorithmic example is problematic - they still need to show high user engagement numbers for their VC owners. Mastodon do not have the same problems since on the contrary a Mastodon instance owner has an economic incentive in making sure spambots and troll factory accounts get closed down asap.

  • Based on my understanding from a psychologist in the family who works with diagnosing ADHD in adults:

    1. "GenX et.al." were mostly never diagnosed as kids. Those that get their diagnosis as adults because they've been unable to successfully "handle" their ADHD do get on stimulants, yes.
    2. ADHD is a lot more difficult to cope with during school than as an adult where you can be successful in other settings that don't require you to sit still and listen for days on days.
    3. ADHD can become a lot less severe after puberty which means medication might've been needed as a child but no longer as an adult.

    caveat: Based on my understanding - I'm not the one with the actual knowledge.

  • Worked for a Japanese company and visited the head office in Tokyo. One of the more senior managers took us to his favorite local sea food restaurant.

    I hate seafood. Especially when it's fancy and you get baby squid that looks like they were just fresh out of the water with no preparation etc (part of the "fancy"). However, culturally I had absolutely no possibility to do anything but eat, smile and praise. The courses just kept coming, each one being more disgusting than the last.

  • I enjoyed both the 20s and early 30s, seeing no reason to stop having fun. We had our first child when I was 38, which at the time felt perfectly fine.

    I was 45 when we had the third, and now at 50 I'm definitely feeling a bit too old for the needs of my younger kids.

    tl;dr: Don't wait too long with adulthood.

  • For some reason DHL managed to get a null-string into their system a few years back, which meant that any DHL shipments to me - no matter what the seller had entered - had "null" as the receiver in the system.

    Everything else was fine, address and tracking numbers sent to me etc - but I did have a few interesting discussions at pickup locations that wanted to see identification matching the name in the system ...

  • "Herpes on the genitalia" still doesn't mean type 2. We have no idea what type she has from the included information. Based on the number of infections of the different types simple statistics would say type 1 is more likely.
