  • Pictures are expensive (data wise), and on-device facial identification is not very accurate, especially at a distance in a variable environment

    Cameras inside the vehicle? Those might be worth mining for data. You can easily detect if there's a person in frame, and snapshot all the passengers. Insurance and law enforcement would be interested in that

    Cameras outside? You could search for human faces or license plates and upload them off peak hours... But how much is that information valuable? What percent of the time is a car even driving? Is palantir even set up to ingest that kind of disparate moving data sources?

    Flock cameras just yield much more useful data... They're designed to sit somewhere and capture those pictures. Even if public outcry gets them removed, they're just going to wait until the public gets bored and then put up less noticeable cameras... We really need to fight this forever

    All that being said, I have a car with no cameras and I'd only budge on that if the car reliably could drive itself. I don't like having cameras pointed at me

  • It's natural gas as opposed to coal gas - if you heat coal in an anerobic environment, it is refined into a flammable liquid + gas. Fun little science demonstration

    They used to use it for lights everywhere, and it left soot all over the walls. Silly putty was invented to clean it off of wallpapers, but then they added dye and it became silly

    I don't have a problem rebranding it as fossil gas, but the name natural wasn't green washing. It did occur naturally, and it is a hell of a lot cleaner than what was used before

  • And number 4, I do not need to be sent an amber alert from two counties over. And because they're usually not nearby, they're super annoying, and tend to contain very little information that I cannot retrieve...

    I just dismiss them. I don't know all the car models, and I'm going to forget the color the moment I stop reading it

    What they should do is make them undismissable notifications with a short unique chime, that way they can also dismiss them when they're no longer active

    And only show them if you're in a certain geofence that could be expanded over time... If I know a kid is missing down the street, I'd actually take a look around. If it stays to for more than a few minutes, I might look up the model of the car and keep an eye out

    And if they sent a pic of that model of the car, I might recognize it

    I'll take wins wherever we can get them, I don't expect many to come from Republicans but every once in a while they do a good thing on accident

    And just imagine how much good can be done in a short time if fresh progressive candidates continue to win... There's so many quick and easy things that could make life better if the people in power give a fuck

    But a few years back they made that one with vertical slices that not only was a better application of the metaphor, it was backed by better understanding of nutrition. This is certainly a step backwards from that

    Instead, if you focus on concrete material conditions, like affordability and healthcare, nearly everyone agrees. Or in the case of flock, you roll it in with datacenters and the AI bubble in general

    Winning under a banner of socialism is impractical, but socialist policies are rapidly rising in popularity across the board. If it goes down easier calling it progressivism, who cares? I just want good things

  • You're supposed to admit to your actions openly for civil disobedience. It gives you standing to challenge and opportunity to drag things to light. Even now, everyone being tried for this creates headlines that unattributed destruction does not

    At higher levels, it can also clog the justice system and make it expensive to continue targeted policies

    Without all that, it's just property destruction. Flock could probably have examples made of people caught (seeing as somehow they seem able to sidestep the law), but that frames the issue in a better way for flock

    Taking the justice system head on is just a much more effective method of forcing change... Granted at a personal cost, although getting caught by the big brother machines themselves seems likely

    Or it could be for political advantage...I mean, the cameras are wildly unpopular and badasses who cut (or shoot) through red tape are very much currently in style

  • Yeah, I agree. It wasn't exactly subtle in it's messaging, and the story felt like just an excuse to display dystopian ideas

    I'd compare it to 1984, which was similar in that the ideas communicated were the main point, but it also had a strong narrative that much better communicated the human experience of those ideas

  • It would be bad. Having more distance between decision makers and the impact of those decisions is not good

    It means everything must be boiled down to metrics, and when you make decisions based on metrics you tend to ignore externalities and miss large parts of the picture

    It also means every power hungry asshole is going to be drawn to the world government like moths to a flame. It'll instantly become a very political environment, where human well-being becomes the chips in a games of power

  • Easy, every organization and every need is it's own bank account if you don't want accounting to be a nightmare

    Like if you take money, it should go in accounts receivable. For expenses, accounts payable. And then you'll want something for the pile of money before it's transferred/sorted, maybe a few for money held aside for various reasons, maybe separate ones for payroll, services from vendors, and miscellaneous things like office supplies. Etc etc etc

    The more money moving around the more seperating out the money flows makes sense. A dozen or two bank accounts for mid sized company is pretty reasonable. A big one might have a dozen per department

    What is a bank account but a digital box to put numbers in anyways? It costs next to nothing per account, but clear delinitation of the money makes it a lot easier to make sure it's going to the right place instead of being pocketed

    Or alternatively, lots of accounts could make it very difficult to make sense of. But that kind of deliberate obsfucation might trigger some kind of anti money laundering alerts

  • What you're saying is more consistent, but I don't think it's more readable

    I'm fine with let or var...if the compiler is going to infer the type thats all well and good. But it's a replacement for the type - why would you write both? It should be either or

    And if the type is being inferred, the next thing I want to know is where it came from. That tells you the type and more, I don't want to have to see a type name that may or may not be there
