  • It is close to the average gross monthly wage in Japan at the current exchange rate. Higher than some rural areas I guess.

  • Makes sense. I could also do that but I’m too lazy hehe. I might give it a try next time though. Thanks!

  • I’ll use it when I make salad dressing. Also throw it into pasta bakes, marinades, and things like that. I’ll add extra herbs when I want the texture. To be honest though I mostly grind it up as certain family members don’t like the texture of dried rosemary, so this just makes it easier lol.

  • Thanks for reminding me that I need to do this again too as I’m almost out. I usually stick mine in a grinder as I like it to be a fine powder for certain recipes.

  • Couldn’t remember the name immediately but the song Rock DJ came to mind. Remember the music video of him ripping his skin off.

  • Wow that’s awesome. Great satisfaction in repairing something, especially when you don’t have the “correct” equipment. Good job!

  • Interestingly, elementary schools here (Japan) provide school lunch, so no bento required unless it is a half day or field trip etc.

It is very nutritious, and rotates through a variety of Japanese and international cuisine. We get a menu each month so we can talk to the kids about it. The children take turns helping to serve lunch in their classroom. You can go back for seconds if there is any left, and you can ask for less of certain things depending on preference.

Kindergarten usually has the option of school lunch or bento (but it depends on on the actual kindergarten). I think JHS may be bento. I’m not at that point yet.

  • It is my understanding that mustard is often used as an emulsifier, especially in homemade mayo. But I don’t really like mayo, so I’m not an expert.

Is the mustard flavor you’re talking about subtle, or in your face?

It should be fairly simple to make a pull through mayo at home if you have a stick mixer.

  • If she uses Safari, there are some good plugins. Not all are free. StopTheMadness Pro is not cheap but is a solution for many annoyances, not just YT. UnTrap for YouTube allows you to hide many elements like shorts. And SponsorBlock automatically skips sponsored segments. If she uses the YouTube app, delete it and set up a shortcut on the home screen to open the web version instead.

  • Me too! And it is so easy to make.

  • Looks wonderful. What sauce do you eat it with? This one is usually a crowd pleaser.

  • Yeah it is pretty versatile. I sometimes use it as a spaghetti sauce in a pinch.

  • Looks great! I really like the sauce from this recipe, and it is very simple to make.

  • But we do pay about 9% of our salaries into the health system, which is mandatory. Just another tax.

Monthly visit for me costs ¥1,420 (9 USD). When I had a wisdom tooth removed at a big hospital it cost ¥7,040 (45 USD).

Basically, we pay 30% of the actual cost. But if you reach a predetermined amount (about ¥90,000) in a month, then you don’t pay any more (or something like that, there is a system, but you have to apply at the time or retrospectively and get a refund)

Also, prices are less for kids (depends on prefecture). A week in hospital for a preschool child costs about ¥4,000. Doctor visits and medicine are often free until elementary school, where each may go up to about ¥500.

    Oh, and ambulances are free.

  • One thing I try to do is to avoid procrastinating. If there is a task to do and I think to myself “I’ll do it later” I then ask myself “will it take more than five minutes”? If the answer is no, then I make myself do it.

I also use an app on my phone to keep a list of chores on a schedule. Having things lingering on the list is annoying, too. But the app allows me to skip or reschedule them. If you are on iOS and need some app like this I recommend PikaPika.

  • Iris Ohyama is a pretty big company. Usually shortened to just Iris in conversation here lol
